FHS boys soccer tops Attleboro, girls soccer ties (video) on Tuesday

Via Twitter, Franklin TV, and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the Fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Tuesday, October 22, 2024

Boys Soccer = Attleboro, 3 @ Franklin, 5 – Final

Girls Soccer = Franklin, 2 @ Attleboro, 2 – Final
– For the second time this season, Attleboro rallied from two goals down to earn a point against Franklin. The draw moves the Bombardiers within a point of clinching a spot in the postseason and drops Franklin into second in the Kelley-Rex division, one point back of KP. Morgan Lovell got both Franklin goals, scoring five minutes into each half, but Attleboro battled back thanks to a brace from sophomore Kennedy Samuel. In the 63rd minute, Samuel was able to finish off a corner from Tatum O’Brien. In the final minute of the match, O’Brien went on a long counterattacking run before slipping a pass through to Samuel in space behind the Franklin defense. Zenda Gjoni had a strong game for the Bombardiers, filling in at multiple positions.

School Committee votes to allow 54 former DT students & siblings not to redistrict at a cost of $75K (video)

The Franklin, MA School Committee took a long time and some tough votes to make two decisions on the redistricting process before them on Tuesday. Given that one was a decision 'tabled' from their prior meeting, and another was almost 'tabled' to a future meeting, one would hope that such decisions do get made on time in future meetings otherwise they'll run the risk of running out of time, period.

The Franklin TV video is available for replay -> https://www.youtube.com/live/ff3Vn-2hi0g?si=0REBBEJdliJoXiyW&t=186

Quick recap:
  • Decision on the overall redistricting proposal was approved at their last meeting but one aspect of that 'tabled' to this meeting: the choice on how to include the former Davis Thayer students. The motion had been amended and then tabled for further clarification on the total number of students involved. The number grew in the time between meetings so if the parents of former DT students choose to stay with Keller rather than move to the new district, they (1) provide their own transportation for the duration of their students elementary education (2) the district comes up with a net new teacher for one year (approx. $75K) to pay for the increase in enrollment in the new north elementary rather than the south. With the approval (by a 4-3 vote) tonight, the District will now be contacting those affected parents who will need to make a decision in the next couple of weeks. The numbers provided for students covered by this opportunity are if all choose to take it. One would think that providing the extra transportation (rather than taking advantage of the district busing) would result in not all taking this choice. We'll see how it works out.
  • A change to the calendar for this school year was approved to add 3 half days in June to provide a block of 4 half days to enable the teachers and other personnel time to pack for the move before the school year ends. As the override failed, this is one of the consequences of the lack of money the district has to operate. The vote to approve was passed by 6-1 after a motion to 'table' the decision for 1 meeting failed by a 3-4 vote.
  • Approval of the goals for the superintendent passed by a 7-0 vote.
  • Consent agenda was passed by a 7-0 vote.

Silent Saturday - Nosferatu
Silent Saturday - Nosferatu
After a well-received experimental run from January to May at the Franklin Historical Museum, Cinema 80, captained by videographer and cinephile Chris Leverone, is back for another season of amazing free `Silent Saturday’ silent film entertainment on Saturdays at 6 PM. The program is free but donations are encouraged.
  • Nosferatu— a timeless classic that tells the tale of a vampire in extra-creepy black and white

After the movie, Chris Leverone responds to questions about the film and often the era in which the film is set.

Kathleen & Norman talk about their development of the forthcoming performance of "The Belle of Amherst" by William Luce (audio)

FM #1293 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1293 in the series.

This session shares my conversation with Kathleen Mary Mulligan, Actor and Producer, and Norman Johnson, Director. We had our conversation virtually via Zoom on Monday, Oct 14, 2024. We talked about their roles in the forthcoming production of “The Belle of Amherst” by William Luce. The play will be performed on Saturday, Oct 26 at the First Universalist Society in Franklin.

During the discussion we find out about a connection between Emily Dickinson and Beirut, Lebanon, where a series of performances of “The Belle of Amherst” were interrupted by the uprising in October, 2019.

The recording runs about 55 minutes, so let’s listen in. Audio link -> https://franklin-ma-matters.captivate.fm/episode/fm-1293-belle-of-amherst-promo-10-14-24/
