Parents versus kids challenge: Who knows more about protecting personal information? (video)

Consumer Alerts from the Federal Trade Commission

By BCP Staff

Back to school is a great time to start having conversations with your family about creating good online habits. Rather than telling kids what they should or shouldn't do online, consider making it a parent versus kids challenge. Find out who in your house knows more about protecting their personal information online — and bring in a little healthy competition.

LiveARTs says Thank You! and shifts efforts to the 2025-2026 Chaminade Schubert Music Club

Dear Friends of LiveARTS Franklin,

Here in New England we are especially fortunate to have so many opportunities to support programs in the arts, in education, in social justice, and essential safety net programs that assist our most vulnerable citizens.  Since the COVID pandemic, the arts have been particularly fragile, as many resources dwindled and audiences had to overcome fear and inertia to return to live music venues.

LiveARTS worked very hard to produce high quality concerts over ZOOM, and we returned to the live concert hall with wonderful artists such as the LiveARTS String Quartet, delightful  wunderkind Kingsley Chen, and most recently, Rachel Childers, horn, from the Boston Symphony Orchestra.  Many of you delighted in the recent sparkling concert played by young artist Kingsley Chen, piano, giving us such hope for the future of live classical music.

All these efforts have been made possible by the ongoing hard work of the Board of Directors of LiveARTS, and by the faithful audiences who have attended our concerts and often donated above the cost of tickets.  We are so very grateful to our loyal supporters!

LiveARTS has provided great live music to the Franklin community at a reasonable ticket price for about 25 years.  The range of chamber music and soloists has been just marvelous.

We have loved the FUSF venue, where our wonderful concerts take place in the green serenity of the woods around the church, and we have much appreciated our partnership with FUSF.
LiveARTs says Thank You!
LiveARTs says Thank You!

Given all the positive energy in our work, and the continuing high quality of our concerts, we deeply regret having to write this letter to tell you that the 2024-2025 concert season will be our last under the identity of LiveARTS Franklin.  The challenges of running even a small, regional concert season continue to grow.  Nearly all our costs are rising steadily, and the economic circumstances in which we function are terribly uncertain.

Many donors are anxious about their financial stability, and we know from long experience that we cannot carry on without donor revenue.  Our small but mighty all-volunteer board has labored with great dedication for many years, and we all agree that we prefer to end our very good run of concerts on a high note.

That high note includes our partnership year in 2023-2024 with the Chaminade Schubert Music Club of Attleboro, who carried on their excellent concert series in 2024-2025 at Murray Unitarian Universalist Church in Attleboro with a mix of member/community concerts and guest artists such as violinist Nicholas Kitchen and Joanna Poraskova, soprano.  They also have a scholarship event for local junior and senior high school music students each year, as well as workshops for independent music teachers.

Since our shared activities were so rewarding, and since they are so nearby, we are joining their efforts to carry on significant musical activities at a regional level.  We celebrate our years of great music, and we look forward to putting our energy into the 2025-2026 Chaminade Schubert Music Club season and into the continued visibility of great live music in Southeastern Massachusetts.

If you have donated to LiveARTS during 2025, you will still be able to list that donation on your 2025 tax return if you wish.  To make sure you hear about all the wonderful upcoming events, we will add your name and contact information to the Chaminade Schubert Music Club list for announcements about the 2025-2026 season unless you direct us otherwise at asears@wheatonma.edu.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you and the many organizations who have helped us over the years, and we look forward to seeing you this fall at one of the upcoming Chaminade Schubert Music Club concerts.

There's more beautiful music awaiting you at Murray this next season, including another concert by violinist Nicholas Kitchen, an all-opera program of arias, duets, and ensembles, and a chamber music concert featuring Rachel Childers, horn, and Michael Roylance, tuba of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, so please join us in Attleboro!

With gratitude and affection,

David Burnham, President
Ann Sears, Artistic Director

Coalition has a program to help !!!
"Kids these days..."

We at SAFE Coalition are thrilled to announce a YEAR LONG Teen Life Skills Classroom. This program will run weekly and will host basic life skills many of our amazing teens leave the home without knowing. As adults, it is our role to support the learning and encouragement of these skills and we are proud to offer a variety of classes with local business owners!
What does this have to do with mental health and substance use? GREAT QUESTION! This is an exercise in prevention. Many teens we work with have shared that they are scared to move forward because they do not have the independent skills to be successful. By teaching our children life skills, we honor their intelligence, we set them up for success outside of the family home, and we move into a relationship of autonomy instead of reliance.
Here are a few topics we will cover:
  • Auto Ed 1: "What if" scenarios
  • Auto Ed 2: Car Maintenance
  • How to read a recipe & grocery shop
  • What changes (legally) when you turn 18
  • Advocating for medical needs after you leave home
  • Plumbing/Heating/Electric: plunging, thermostats, and fuse boxes
  • Communication skills: how to effectively use the telephone
  • Stop The Bleed Fire Safety at school/home/in the car
  • Banking, saving, and credit!
  • Laundry: wash, fold, dry clean!
  • Personal Paperwork: how to save and store your important documents
  • Internet Safety: how to protect yourself
  • Resumes: how to make them work for you
  • MAIL & PAYING BILLS: How to do it and why it is important

Annual Report of the Town of Franklin Planning Board - FY 2024

With the Biennial Election coming up November 4, 2025, the nomination papers are available beginning Aug 4, 2025 for candidates to take, obtain the appropriate number of signatures to get on the ballot.
We are sharing the section of the Annual Report for the Town of Franklin 2024 to help explain what each role entails.
---------------

The Planning Board, as established by MGL. Ch. 41 sec.70, is responsible for “…making plans for the development of the municipality, with special reference to proper housing of its inhabitants.”

The Board is charged with administering the State’s Subdivision Control Law (MGL. 41 Ch.81K) and the local subdivision rules and regulations (Chapter 300). The Board makes recommendations to the Town Council on Zoning By-Law amendments and may at its own discretion adopt new subdivision regulations.

The Board is also designated as the permitting authority for various site plan and special permit submittals under the Town’s Zoning Bylaw (Ch. 185). The Board receives recommendations from the Design Review Commission on building design, elevation, and signage for commercial site plan permits, and from the Conservation Commission on wetland related issues. The Board also works closely with the Planning & Community Development and Public Works Departments.

In FY 2024, the Planning Board reviewed and issued decisions for several projects throughout the year. There were several applications received for solar panels. The largest solar project is located at Maplegate Country Club with over 100+ acres of solar panels.

The Planning Board received several applications for residential development. A proposed 20-unit new building located at 100-110 East Central was approved with 2 affordable units. Uncas Ave was previously approved for nine duplex units. The project has since been increase to nine tri-plex units, adding a total of 27 units for residential housing.

Throughout the year, the Planning Board conducted their public meetings in a hybrid format, offering in person and remote attendance to the applicants and public.

The Planning Board accepted eight (8) Form H - Certificate of Completions. Acceptance of a Form H indicates all work has been completed according to Site Plans or Subdivision Plans previously approved by the Planning Board.

The Planning Board also received seven (7) Special Permit applications. Since the Town of Franklin has exceeded their 10% of affordable, known as CH40B housing, the Town developed a Friendly 40B process. The Planning Board review one (1) application for a Ch 40B development located at 444 East Central St. This has been the second application received and reviewed by Planning Board and gave the Planning Board an opportunity to provide feedback on affordable housing.

For a complete list of decisions please visit the Town Clerk’s Office. The Planning Board held public hearings on several proposed Zoning Bylaw changes focusing on meeting the most recent state regulations known as Section 3A, requiring MBTA communities to zone for more housing within ½ mile of the train station.

The Planning Board also reviewed and updated the Marijuana Overlay District map, addition additional parcels to the map. The Board continues to help property owners make the desired changes and improvements to their properties while fostering responsible growth and development in the Town of Franklin.

The Planning Board typically meets twice a month on Mondays at 7:00 PM in the Municipal Building. All Board meetings are open to the public, and are televised via Community Cable Access.

Planning Board Membership
The Planning Board consists of five members and one associate member. The associate member participates in all hearings but only votes on Special Permits if one of the members is unable to act. The Board members are elected and serve 4-year terms.

Below is a list of current Planning Board members:
Gregory Rondeau, Chairman
Beth Wierling, Vice Chairman
Jennifer Williams, Clerk
Jay Mello, Chris Stickney
Mark Mucciarone, Associate member

Respectfully submitted,
Gregory Rondeau, Chairman

Indivisible has launched a campaign, One Million Rising, to train citizens in non-compliance against authoritarianism. The Indivisible Middlesex/Norfolk/Worcester Chapter is offering three opportunities to participate in this campaign and learn about eventually training the trainers so we can grow our community connection, resilience, and resistance.

(resistance gathering)

August 7 will have a brief introduction to deepen our understanding of the moment we're in, the need for mass defiance, the "pillars" framework, and how we can influence those pillars. It will be an opportunity to learn about the myriads of ways we can resist authoritarianism by recognizing the connections we already have in our lives.
