In the News: school funding forum - Feb 13; necklace looking to be returned to owner 40 years later

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"With a challenging budget cycle ahead, the School Committee will hold a legislative forum on education funding on Feb. 13, 7 p.m., in the Franklin High School lecture hall, 218 Oak St.
The goal of the forum is to increase transparency in the school system, and to pick the brains of stakeholders on topics such as rising health insurance, transportation, special education tuition, and other finance related topics.
They will also discuss a number of unfunded state mandates and the lack of funds to support them throughout the district."

"When something goes missing, hope of ever finding it seems to fade away over time. Franklin native and Shrewsbury resident Keith Lippert is looking to restore that hope to someone who lost a necklace nearly 40 years ago.
When Lippert was about 11 years old, around 1980, he found a St. Christopher medallion in the sand of Beaver Pond during a stroll.
“After hours, I found this necklace in the sand,” he said. “No one was there to turn it into, so as child would do, I just took it home and threw it in my drawer.”

FPAC Family Concert Series: New England Percussion Ensemble - Feb 4

The New England Percussion Ensemble specializes in presenting creative and energetic audience-interactive enrichment programs to youngsters.

They will be presenting "LANGUAGE OF THE ANCIENTS" -- 1:00 PM at THE BLACK BOX

Audience members travel a journey through time which conjures the image of early mankind using stones, sticks, rattles and hollow logs to accompany singing and body movement. A leap in time occurs when we use "found" instruments of today – plastic tubes of different lengths, trash bags snapped in the air, newspapers torn in time to foot stomping accompaniment.
FPAC Family Concert Series: New England Percussion Ensemble - Feb 4
FPAC Family Concert Series: New England Percussion Ensemble - Feb 4

Our exploration of this truly ancient language travels from the familiar to the unfamiliar with imagination, inventiveness and creativity – new sights, new sounds; some loud and spirit shaking, some soft and haunting.

(With performance piece titles such as “Take Out the Garbage” and "The Elephants Are Coming" how can you lose???) Student hands-on ensemble concludes.

Sponsored by:   Berry Insurance

The Franklin Performing Arts Company Family Concert Series is free and open to the public.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Franklin Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

"Several MetroWest and Milford-area firefighters graduated Thursday from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy’s Chief Fire Officer Management Training Program.
The 14-week program is designed to help fire officers become better department leaders and managers. As part of the program, all participants had to write a research paper that identifies a current problem or challenge to their department, while offering a solution. They must then present a proposal for their plan to municipal officers."

CHELSEA BERRY

February 10th, $20
with special guest
Billy Keane
Chelsea Berry returns to the Circle of Friends Coffeehouse on Saturday, February 10th, at 8PM.  Chelsea appeared in Franklin last spring performing with Livingston Taylor and she was so impressive that she was invited back as a featured performer.

She is a singer-songwriter with the edge, power, and finesse of legends. Her presence has been described by listeners as "compelling… she draws the entire house into her world like moths to a flame." As a vocalist and performer, she evokes the style of artists such as Cheryl Crow, Eva Cassidy, KD Lang, and Melissa Etheridge.

Singer-songwriter Livingston Taylor calls her vocals "world class" and says of Berry, "A voice of remarkable power and control with a joyous soul. Brave and bright, Chelsea Berry is the real thing." Berry's beautiful voice and commanding stage presence has brought her across the U.S. as regular support for Livingston and others as well as headliner of her own shows. Born and raised in Alaska, she now makes her home in NYC.

Her music transcends its indie rock roots and touches listeners with its poetic lyric, bold melodies, and pure, clear, powerful vocals. Singer/songwriter Chris Smither says Berry is "..Great, talented, beautiful … her future is so bright you're gonna have to wear shades."  http://www.chelseaberry.com/

Opening the show will be Billy Keane, a folk musician for a new generation.  His music combines compelling story telling and socially relevant lyrical poetry with melodies and accompaniments ranging from the energetic and heart-pumping to the introspective and achingly touching.  http://www.therealbillykeane.com/

Register O’Donnell was Guest Speaker at Franklin Senior Center

As part of an ongoing effort to bring the Registry of Deeds directly to the citizens of Norfolk County, Register of Deeds William P. O’Donnell appeared January 23rd as guest speaker at the Franklin Senior Center. O’Donnell gave an overview of the Registry, the principal office for providing real property information in Norfolk County.

Register O’Donnell also spent time warning seniors about an ongoing deed scam that is being perpetrated against all citizens of Norfolk County, young and old. “Norfolk County residents continue to receive direct-mail solicitations offering them a certified copy of their property deed for an exorbitant fee ranging anywhere from $59.50-$86.00,” stated O’Donnell.

“Don’t fall victim to this deed scam. These companies are making outrageous profits. If a consumer knew that the Registry of Deeds would provide them a certified copy of a property deed for a charge of only $1.00 per page, plus an additional $1.00 for postage, they would never agree to pay these companies such an outrageous fee for service. The average price for a mailed homeowner’s deed by the Registry, usually two pages, is $3.00.”

A good portion of the address was also spent discussing the advantages of the Massachusetts Homestead Act. Register O’Donnell noted, “The Homestead Act is an important tool for homeowners as the law provides limited protection against the forced sale of an individual’s primary residence to satisfy unsecured debt up to $500,000.”
Register O’Donnell was Guest Speaker at Franklin Senior Center

Concluding his remarks, O’Donnell stated, “I want to thank Karen Alves, Director of the Franklin Senior Center, Council on Aging board members and all the staff at the Senior Center who do an outstanding job serving the elderly community of Franklin.”
