Town of Franklin Vaccine information - The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is currently distributing the COVID-19 vaccine to individuals in Phase 1 and Phase 2 ( individuals 75 + older). For residents of Franklin, the closest available site to obtain a COVID-19 vaccination is at Gillette Stadium. You can book an appointment online at: https:// www.cic-health.com/our-locations?location=gillette If you do not have access to a computer, you can call the Senior Center and staff will try and assist you in making an appointment. Please keep in mind that appointments are booking up fast, but will increase in the coming weeks as more vaccine supply comes into the Commonwealth. In addition, The Franklin Health Department is ordering doses of the vaccine, but is limited to ordering 100 doses at a time per DPH regulations Doses will be made available to Franklin residents aged 75+ older, but there is no timeframe or details available yet. If you are interested in receiving the vaccine once available, please contact the center at 508-520-4945.

CommonWealth Magazine: "Baker stands up vaccine call center"

 

"GOV. CHARLIE BAKER unveiled a 500-person call center on Friday to help residents 75 and older book appointments to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

The center is intended to assist those without internet access or those having trouble navigating the current two-step process, which requires using a state website to find vaccine locations near them and then going to websites for those locations to actually book an appointment. The call center, reached by dialing 2-1-1 and selecting the option for help making a vaccine appointment, will handle the booking process for the individual or put them on a call-back list if no appointments are available.

The service will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with representatives who speak both English and Spanish. Translators for over 100 other languages will also be available upon request."

Franklin's Event Outlook: Feb 5 - Feb 11, 2021

Super Bowl Sunday, the weather forecast isn't all that great, and a relatively quiet weekend (and week) ahead. It is up to us all to find something to do to keep busy and stay safe (masks, social distance, etc....). 

There is hope with some lift in the restrictions coming Monday, and even more importantly, perhaps better news on the vaccine delivery front ahead as we head to Valentine's Day. 

So let's keep the faith and hope alive. We'll get through this!

Economic Development Subcommittee - meeting recap - 02/03/2021

Quick Recap:

• Very enlightening listening session this time. Good info gleaned from participants all around. Food trucks are not inanimate objects, they have people and families to support behind them
• Where did the 25% requirement for tasting space come from; the manufacturing bylaw allows 25% for a manufacturer to have that amount of space for a retail operation
• Tasting rooms as designed in the bylaw are shifting to be more than that per some of the participants; what should they have, how should they be operated, how can the service be 'safe'....
• Food requirement for tasting makes sense but then brings complications, patio space outside counted against space requirements, which then drive capacity and parking; need to be careful of making changes without considering other effects especially unintended ones
• the food truck experience is not the same as a table service, should not be considered competitive, they are distinctly different
• No pun intended but there is plenty of food for thought here, more to come as the info is reviewed and solution or options designed for next discussion (TBD)

• Food trucks are not inanimate objects, they also represent the business and the family behind it. The Bubbleman pivoted to do a hotdog truck in addition to bubbles, and can't work here. Board of Health won't allow this as a 'zoning issue' #edc0203 even in a private party

Both FHS girls and boys basketball teams top Attleboro on Thursday

Boys Basketball = Attleboro, 44 @ Franklin, 60 – Final 

– Franklin established a lead after a quarter, built on it by halftime, and pulled away with a dominant third quarter to avenge its loss to Attleboro. The Panthers were up 31-20 at the halftime break before winning the third quarter, 20-4, to put the game away. Declan Walmsley (13 points) hit a pair of threes in the third, Andrew Byfield (11 points) added five points and both Jake O’Brien and Zach Harvey added four as the Panthers took a 51-24 lead into the final frame.

Girls Basketball = Franklin, 47 @ Attleboro, 28 – Final 

– Franklin closed out is second straight unbeaten regular season with a sweep of the Bombardiers. Olivia Quinn led the Panthers in all 10 games this season, including 16 points against Attleboro. Elizabeth Wilson, who recently committed to Endicott College, chipped in with nine points for the Panthers.

Boston Globe: "Baker to increase the capacity limit on restaurants, gyms, other businesses to 40% starting Monday"

 

"Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the Baker administration is increasing the temporary capacity limits for a variety of businesses such as stores, gyms, and restaurants.

The state Department of Public Health informed cities and towns on Thursday that the 25-percent capacity restrictions, put in place after Christmas, would be increased to 40 percent on Monday because of recent improvements in COVID-19 data. The change includes an increase in allowed office capacity, to 40 percent, though few offices will fill to that level anytime soon with so many people still working out of their homes.

“We know that these restrictions have been and continue to be enormously difficult for large and small businesses, their employees, and for individuals everywhere,” Governor Charlie Baker said during an afternoon briefing Thursday. “But we’re making progress in this battle against COVID and everyone’s hard work and preparation is now making it possible for us to continue to step back to what we might call a new normal.”

Both FHS girls and boys hockey teams post wins on Wednesday

Boys Hockey = Attleboro, 2 @ Franklin, 6 – Final 

– Franklin erased a pair of one-goal deficits in the first half and then pulled away from Attleboro for the win. The Bombardiers struck first but Franklin’s Dom Lampasona (from Dylan Marchand and Nolan Norton) equalized for the hosts. After Attleboro scored again, Declan Lovett tied the game with assists coming from Joe LeBlanc and Sean Connelly. Justin Abely added two more goals while Will Sheehan and Sean Connelly each scored once.

Girls Hockey = Franklin, 2 @ Mansfield/Oliver Ames, 1 – Final 

 

"Every game in the Hockomock League is a grind. Games are tight, chances are at a premium, and sometimes it takes the right bounces or the puck ending up on the right stick at the right time to find the back of the net.

Twice in Wednesday night’s game at the Foxboro Sports Center, the puck bounced to the stick of sophomore Lyndsay Atkinson and she buried a pair of rebounds to lift Franklin to a 2-1 victory against Mansfield/Oliver Ames in what was another even matchup between these two teams.

Following the game, both coaches talked about how happy they were to be back on the ice. Franklin had not played since Jan. 23 and had been off the ice for a week and was without its assistant coaches due to COVID protocols. MOA was missing four players on Wednesday and hadn’t played since Jan. 18.

“It’s been a very interesting year,” said Franklin coach Margie Burke. “We’re a small league and we all know each other and we’ve all been around for a long time. We can all appreciate everyone’s situation and we all get it.”

All passengers over the age of two must wear a face covering when traveling on trains or at all railroad stations. Anyone who does not comply with this requirement will be denied boarding and could be subject to penalties under Federal Law.

Franklin Cultural District February Newsletter - deadline for submission Feb 12

Dear Franklin Cultural District Partners,

The February issue of the Franklin Cultural District newsletter is in the works. In order to streamline our publication we would love each of you to share one or two highlights of things that are happening with your organization during the month of February and the first half of March. It would be great if you could also include a link to where readers could go to learn more about your organization. We would also like you to include a logo in a jpeg or similar format. If you have a special picture highlighting one of your articles, please feel free to include that as well.

CommonWealth Magazine: "State tax collections continue to surprise"

"JANUARY TAX COLLECTIONS  obliterated the Baker administration’s expectations, coming in almost a half-billion dollars above the Department of Revenue’s already-upgraded monthly benchmark and helping to brighten the state’s financial picture heading into a fresh round of budget deliberations.

DOR collected $3.347 billion from taxpayers last month, which is $392 million, or 13.3 percent, greater than what the state collected in January 2020 and $429 million, or 14.7 percent, above DOR’s benchmark for the month, which had already been boosted by $180 million from an earlier estimate.

“January revenue included increases in withholding, income estimated payments, regular sales tax, and ‘all other tax,’ as well as a decrease in meals tax,” Revenue Commissioner Geoffrey Snyder said. “The increase in withholding is likely related to unemployment insurance benefits and bonus related payments, and income estimated payments were strong likely because of 2020 investment-related income gains. The increase in ‘all other tax’ is primarily attributable to estate taxes, a category that tends to fluctuate.”

The Franklin Town Council will hold a Public Hearing on  an application by MADD Deli,Inc. d/b/a Dacey’s Market and Deli, located at 353 Lincoln Street, Franklin, MA for a New Wine & Malt Retail Package Store License. This hearing will be held on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at 7:10 PM.

This hearing will provide an open forum for the discussion. This meeting will be held remotely via the “ZOOM” platform. Residents can visit the Town Website (Franklinma.gov) and click on the Town Calendar for up to date information on how to access the meeting.

“Look, I’m not happy with where we are”

 

"Disappointed with the state’s COVID-19 vaccination drive so far, Governor Charlie Baker on Wednesday said officials are redirecting large quantities of unused doses now sitting in freezers to doctors and pharmacies, including many in communities hardest hit by the coronavirus.

They’re also designating specific days for local residents, especially people of color, to get shots at the new mass vaccination site at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury, following reports that many who booked initial appointments there were white people from surrounding communities.

The steps come as the Baker administration moves into a new phase of its vaccine rollout in which many more people will qualify for shots, starting with about 450,000 residents age 75 and over. But complaints have been mounting about the difficulty booking appointments and the relatively small percentage of people of color who have been vaccinated."

FM #450 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 450 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares the conversation that the “Radio Gang” had during the winter break. We took the time to look back at 2020 and ahead to 2021. We did have our conversation via conference bridge to adhere to the ‘social distancing’ requirements of this pandemic period.
