Not just for Newcomers: Meeting to feature Hellen and Ahern - March 23

We are pleased to announce that Jamie Hellen, Town Administrator, and Dr. Sara Ahern, School Superintendent, will be speaking at our March meeting. Our town budget, construction, commercial and residential development are just some of the topics that Jamie will address. There’s also a lot going on in the school system for Sara to discuss. There will be no shortage of topics . . . come bring your questions!  It’s an informal meeting and a great opportunity to practically have a one on one conversation with these community leaders.

We welcome you to come join your friends and neighbors at the Franklin Newcomers and Friends March Monthly Meeting.  Meet us upstairs at "3" Restaurant on Wednesday, March 23 at 7:30, one week later than our usual 3rd Wednesday of the month.  Hot and cold appetizers and beverages are provided.  No need to be a newcomer to the area . . . and no need to RSVP.

Come join us and have fun while you make connections in your community.  We are a multi-generational club offering a wide range of activities for all ages with an emphasis on fun and camaraderie. We are a member driven organization and are always excited to welcome new faces and new ideas.

Residents of Franklin, or any surrounding town that doesn't have a Newcomers Club, are welcome to join us. We run our meetings September through May, typically meeting the 3rd Wednesday of the month. We also hold many fun and varied events throughout the year to stay connected.

Look for us on our Meetup and Facebook pages for more information.

Boston Globe: "Think cheerleaders aren’t athletes? Think again, say those at the state championship"

"The vibe at the Massachusetts School Administrators Association Winter Cheerleading State Championship is spirited, and the music is pulsating.

Where else do you get 800 high school student-athletes on 54 teams doing thousands of pyramids and tumbles and not hear a single boo from the large crowds?

If you’re looking for pom-poms, you won’t find any here at Worcester State University.

Although cheerleading is not officially a sport in Massachusetts schools, there’s no doubt that these are bona fide athletes. The days of cheerleaders being thought of as just pretty faces rooting on the boys’ teams are long over."

"Indications within the United States support the idea that new wave is already getting started"

"When it comes to COVID, the United States specializes in denialism. Deny the human-to-human transmission of the virus when China’s first cases were publicized in late 2019. Deny that the virus is airborne. Deny the need for boosters across all adult age groups. There are many more examples, but now one stands out – learning from other countries.

In early 2020, with the major outbreak in the Lombardy region of Italy that rapidly and profoundly outstripped hospital resources and medical staffing, Americans expressed confidence that it won’t happen here. That it couldn’t happen here. And then it did.

Fast forward two years of the pandemic: the United Kingdom and Europe have provided five unmistakable warnings to America that a new surge was occurring. Within weeks, each time, the United States experienced a new wave, some not as severe (such as with the Alpha variant), some worse (Delta and Omicron variants). From this COVID track record over two years, it is palpable: what happens in the UK and Europe doesn’t stay in the UK and Europe."

Reminder: The GoFundMe for Franklin resident Scott McLean who is recovering from stroke is short of its goal

"Hi , I’m Bonnie Fitzgerald and I’m fundraising on behalf of Scott McLean and family

On the morning of November 24th, the day before Thanksgiving, Scott McLean suffered a devastating ischemic stroke. Luckily at the time, his two boys, Derek and Jason, were home and able to call 911 saving his life. Scott underwent emergency surgery, but unfortunately, it was not successful. He was left paralyzed on his right side, unable to walk, speak or eat. He spent over 2 weeks in the ICU, overcoming several life-threatening complications before being able to transfer to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital where he fights every day to regain some of this lost function. He has made some progress, but Scott and his family still have a very long and difficult road ahead of them.

Many of you know Scott as a strong, independent and loving father and husband. You could always find Scott and his wife Becca on the sidelines cheering on their boys during their Franklin Pop Warner football and Bishop Feehan and Bridgton Academy lacrosse games. We are raising money to help the McLean family with Scott’s medical expenses and future care needs. We are grateful for donations of any amount. Thank you and please keep Scott, Becca and their boys in your thoughts and prayers."
