"Students from Jefferson Elementary School were recognized by local legislators for their work in organizing and conducting a pajama and sock clothing drive for foster children. 

State Rep. Jeffrey Roy, D-Franklin, and state Sen. Richard Ross, R-Wrentham, were at the school Friday to present the children - members of the student council - with citations honoring their work. 

Assistant Principal Sarah Klim said the council had come up with the idea, wrote a proposal for it, decorated a collection box and designed fliers advertising the drive."

Jefferson Elementary School

"Franklin Public Schools will offer four one-week summer sessions of Ready Set Kindergarten at Jefferson Elementary School, 628 Washington St. 

Ready Set Kindergarten is a course for incoming Franklin Public Schools kindergarten students that enables children to become familiar with a kindergarten classroom setting and daily routines. All activities will be theme-based using books, dramatic play, music, manipulatives, outside games and arts and crafts. This course is taught by a staff of certified teachers and educational assistants. 

There are four one-week sessions, from July 11 to Aug. 4, with different themes each week."

Mansfield tops both FHS basketball teams on Friday

Girls Basketball

• Franklin, 38 @ Mansfield, 44 – Final 

– Meg Hill and Caroline Maher led the way for Mansfield with 12 points apiece. Lauren Rudolph was the top scorer for Franklin with eight points.

Boys Basketball

• Mansfield, 55 @ Franklin, 51 – Final 

– Franklin rallied from a 15 point second half deficit to get within two in the final minutes but a big shot from Mansfield’s Matt Ehrlich and key stops sealed the win for the Hornets. Tyler Boulter had a team-high 12 points while Sam Goldberg had 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Matt Ehrlich (four rebounds, four assists) and Christian Weber each had nine points, Nick Baskin had six and Max Boen had five points and four assists. Franklin sophomore Connor Peterson scored 21 points and hauled in nine rebounds while freshman Jay Dieterle netted 18 points.

"Friday night’s contest between rivals Mansfield and Franklin wasn’t the exact same as their first meeting back in January, but the symmetry was apparent. 

Just like January’s game, the home team erased a second half double-digit deficit to make it a one possession in the final minutes. 

But just like the first time around, the visitors walked away with the win. 

Mansfield held off a late rally from the Panthers, keeping Franklin scoreless over the final final minutes, in route to a 55-51 win that pulled the Hornets level atop the Kelley-Rex division with just one league game to go."

Teens of Franklin Federated to lead service on dating violence

The teenagers of Franklin Federated Church will be leading a special Valentine's Day worship service that looks at building healthy relationships and preventing teen dating violence.

The service will be held Sunday, Feb. 14, at 10 AM at the church at 171 Main Street.

All are welcome.  A nursery for babies is available, and activity kits are on hand in the church for children to use during the first part of the worship service. During the second part, children in preschool through grade 4 go to church school. Large print bulletins and hearing assistance devices are available, and there is an access ramp at the left side of the church.

"Officials from the F.X. O'Regan Early Childhood Development Center spoke about ways to encourage young children to learn and future changes coming up during this week's School Committee meeting. 

Principal Kelty Kelley gave a presentation to the committee at its Tuesday night meeting, speaking about efforts that had taken place at the school recently and plans for the future. The ECDC is a preschool that accepts children between the ages of three and five, and serves children with and without special needs."

"Gov. Charlie Baker’s recently announced plan to increase funding to career vocational technical education has local vocational schools appreciative and excited about the opportunities it may provide them. 

The proposed series of initiatives to increase vocational school funding by $83.5 million over the next several years would benefit local schools such as Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School in Upton, Tri-County Vocational Technical High School in Franklin and Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School in Marlborough by providing grant opportunities for equipment and learning experiences. 

"With too many good-paying jobs going unfilled, we are pleased to announce this critical investment in our career and technical schools," Baker said in a press release. "Our proposal will make it possible for more students to explore a pathway to success through stronger partnerships with our schools and local businesses in the Commonwealth."

"You’re not going to see too many teams of that caliber"

"There is not a single player that took the ice for Franklin on Wednesday night that had ever played against perennial power Malden Catholic. The game was billed as a rematch of last year’s Super 8 first round but in truth it was more of a learning experience, a building block for the Panthers. 

With a Div. 1 tournament berth locked up and a fifth straight Kelley-Rex division title already sewn up, the Panthers used the exclusion game against the Lancers at Pirelli Veterans Memorial Rink as preparation for the playoffs. 

Although the Lancers skated away with a 6-0 victory, the chance to play the No. 2 team in the state could be a boost for Franklin. 

“They’re stronger, faster. No doubt about it,” said Franklin coach Chris Spillane. 

“Every 50-50 battle they won. They’re good with puck possession and they’re faster.”

"When Ficco's Bowladrome closed last June, it brought to an end a 79-year legacy of bowling in downtown. 

The possibility of a return is alive now that a group of businessmen is attempting to bring bowling back to town, using equipment - pin setters, ball returns and automatic scoring system - once used at Ficco's. 

Franklin resident Andy Trockman, the group's operations manager, said his connection to the bowling alley was personal."

The council heard an update from department director Ryan Jette on a number of initiatives at its meeting last week. 

Among the programs the department offers, Jette said, are flag football, field hockey and basketball, as well as classes on such topics as babysitting, social netiquette and art."
