This session of the radio show shares the Town of Franklin Board of Health Meeting held on Wednesday, Oct 2, 2024. The meeting was conducted in hybrid format. 2 board members participated;  Sweet (chair - virtual) Mu-Chow (present), Harris (absent). Health Dept staff present are heard as they respond to the roll call opening the session.

FHS volleyball tops Bishop Feehan on Wednesday (video)

Volleyball = Franklin, 3 vs. Bishop Feehan, 1 – Final 

– After splitting the first two sets, Franklin regained the lead in the match with a tight win in the third and went on to close it out in four for a 3-1 (25-12, 13-25, 25-23, 25-18) win over visiting Bishop Feehan. With the match tied 1-1 and the third set tied 23-23, the tandem of freshman Charlotte Yuelenski and sophomore Gianna Laurello (eight kills) came up with a big block to put Franklin ahead. A tremendous save from senior Faith Edgehille (33 digs) set up the set clinching kill on the right side from Laurello. Junior Makayla Kuykendall notched nine kills, including the 500th of her career, and nine digs, Olivia Alberti added 12 kills, and Brooke Daniels registered 28 assists.

Raffle Quilt "Star Gazer" on display at Emma's Quilt Cupboard

Rhododendron Needlers Quilt Guild (RNQG) is looking forward to exhibiting our Raffle Quilt at Emma’s Quilt Cupboard, 319E Central Street Franklin, for the month of October. 

 "Star Gazer" on display at Emma's Quilt Cupboard

The quilt is called “Star Gazing” as it features the traditional Hunter’s Star Block. It is presented in beautiful shades of blue and white, measures 67 inches x 82 inches and was created by dozens of guild members. It was machine-quilted by Diana R. Annis, a guild member and nationally known long arm quilter. 

Raffle tickets are 3/$5 or $2 each; proceeds support the guild’s mission of education and philanthropy.

RNQG has been in existence since 1983 and is currently 76 members strong, representing 35 towns around southeastern Mass. Guild meetings are the third Wednesday of each month from September through June at 7:00pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Walpole.

The guild’s philanthropy includes donating an average of 100 comfort quilts per year through local social service agencies such as the Home for Little Wanderers, as well as supporting the New England Quilt Museum, providing a scholarship to a graduating senior from a high school in our member network and a donation to that senior’s public library for the purpose of purchasing materials about art.

Enrollment Now Open for Massachusetts Home Energy Assistance Program

Eligible Massachusetts households can now apply for financial assistance for the 2024-2025 heating season

 

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities today announced that the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) enrollment period for the 2024-2025 winter heating season will open on October 1. This critical program provides financial relief to eligible households to help them pay their winter heating bills, ensuring they can keep their homes safe and warm during the colder months.

 

HEAP is a free, statewide resource that assists eligible renters and homeowners by paying a portion of their winter heating bills directly to their heating companies. Starting Oct.1, homeowners and renters can apply online or through local administering agencies across the state. The assistance period runs from Nov. 1, 2024, to April 30, 2025. HEAP offers grants that do not need to be repaid; however, households must meet specific eligibility requirements to qualify.

Massachusetts Home Energy Assistance Program

 

"No resident should have to worry about heating their home during the winter," said Secretary of Housing and Livable Communities Ed Augustus. "With high costs continuing to strain household finances, the Home Energy Assistance Program is more critical than ever. We urge anyone in need of heating assistance to explore their eligibility by applying online or visiting the nearest administering agency. Please share this valuable information with loved ones or neighbors who could benefit from this support during the colder months."

 

Eligibility is determined by several factors, including household size and the combined gross annual income of residents 18 and older. Qualifying households, including those with the cost of heat included in the rent, can receive assistance for all heating sources, including oil, electricity, natural gas, propane, kerosene, wood and coal. Households do not need to be on public assistance or have unpaid heating bills to qualify.

Special Update: Beaver Street Interceptor Project - BJs area delays Thu/Fri this week

BSI Construction Update for Thursday (10/3) and Friday (10/4):

The construction crew will be moving over to working on West Central St. at the entrance to BJ's Wholesale Club between the hours of 7AM-4PM. The entrance to BJ's will be open in both directions but please follow posted signs and police details for directions.

At the Franklin Recreation Center, the construction of the new Beaver Street Interceptor Pump Station will continue with excavation to get the final grade depth for the pump station foundation.

Boys Soccer = Canton, 0 @ Franklin, 5 – Final 

– Franklin scored less than two minutes into the game and went on to land an emphatic 5-0 win over Canton, snapping a brief two-game winless stretch for the Panthers. Senior Wyatt Herndon was the first to a rebound after a shot from Garrett Scagliarini was pushed aside as the Panthers grabbed a 1-0 win in the 2nd minute. Franklin extended its lead to 3-0 by halftime as Andre Missagia (from Jibreel Brahimi) scored in the 24th minute and Herndon (from Scagliarini) netted another in the 32nd minute. The hosts put any hopes of a Canton comeback away less than a minute into the second half when Jason Proenca crashed in front after Gabe Terry knocked down a long throw from Josh Rappa. It was Rappa who capped the scoring just five minutes later, getting on the end of Scagliarini’s third assist of the net on a low cross to the back post.

Girls Soccer = Franklin, 1 @ Canton, 0 – Final

Volleyball = Sharon, 0 @ Franklin, 3 – Final 

– A balanced offensive attack led Franklin to a straight set win over visiting Sharon, 3-0. Makayla Kuykendall (15 digs) and Emerson Delleo (seven aces) both recorded nine kills in the win, Olivia Alberti notched six kills, and Olivia Caruso dished out 13 assists in the win.

Field Hockey = Franklin, 12 @ Sharon, 0 – Final 

– Holding a 1-0 lead after the first 15 minutes, Franklin erupted for four goals in the second and third frames to get a big win on the grass in Sharon. Ella Marzullo (two assists) and Haley Wernig (one assist) each had a hat trick in the win while Maddie O’Brien tacked on two goals for the Panthers.

Boys Cross Country = Franklin, 20 @ Taunton, 42 – Final 

– Taunton sophomore Jordan Trucchi won the first dual meet of his career in a time of 17:44, but Franklin’s depth won the day as they secured the next six spots. The Panthers were led by senior Alex Fiorvanti (17:52). Next to score for Franklin were senior Jack Halter (18:20), junior Adam Peng (18:44), junior Tucker Morin (18:52), sophomore Nick Mitchell (18:58) and freshman Sawyer Laing (18:58). Franklin improves its record to 3-1.

Girls Cross Country = Franklin, 20 @ Taunton, 39 – Final 

– The Panthers claimed three of the top four spots and five of the top seven to secure a win on the road at Taunton High. Victoria Courtright-Lim was at the head of the front pack, crossing in at 21:39 for the individual victory. Teammate Fiona Morrison (21:43) was right behind follow by Taunton’s Emersyn DePonte, who was coming off a win at the MSTCA Bay State Invitational over the weekend. Carli Walbert (22:03) was fourth, Emma Pruitt (22:59) took sixth, and Annabelle Santiago (23:13) was seventh overall. Taunton’s Madison Dias clocked in at 22:19 to take fifth overall.

Golf = Milford, 163 @ Franklin, 144 – Final 

– The Panthers inched closer to clinching at least a share of the Kelley-Rex title with an impressive win at home, taking down visiting Milford, 144-163. Six of the eight Franklin golfers in the lineup came in under 40 on the day, led by a one-under-par medalist round from senior Liam Lewandowski, who finished at 34 for the round. Jack Nelson added a 35, Caden Sullivan chipped in with a 36, and Ben Burgess, Tyler Perlman, and Carter Balducci each shot a 39. Milford’s David Fleming had a team-low round of 38 and Zach Hipolito came in at 39 for the day.
