November 2017 November Fair Franklin SEPAC hosts the Camps, Activities and Respite Resource Fair We have a great group of local providers, state agencies and small businesses who look forward to discussing activities for your special needs child for school vacations, summer vacation, afterschool and weekends. Thursday, November 16th 7:00 -9:00 PM Keller School Cafeteria 500 Lincoln Street, Franklin MA Some of our participants include: MGH Aspire, DDS, Hockomock YMCA, HMEA's Autism Resource Central, Kennedy Donovan Center, Special Olympics, Unique Steps Dance Academy, Excel Karate, Willow Brook Farm Holliston, Franklin ESY, House of Possibilities, The Bridge Center, Rising Hope Farm, iCan Bike (iCan Shine) - Bellingham co-hosted by Bellingham and Hopedale SEPACs, Drama Kids, JCC Camps,etc. We look forward to seeing you there.  "Bad Moms" Support Group! Dads are welcome too! Where: Regal Cinemas, Bellingham When: Thursday, November 30 around 8:00 PM (we will confirm the time closer to the date) Similar to last year, after the movie we are going to Chilli's for a drink. Hope to see you there! More fun coming your way! Sensory Friendly Santa Claus! (More details to follow) This event is open to all special-needs students and their families at no cost.  The mission of the Franklin Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) is to promote a network for parents of children with disabilities and provide a forum to share information and discuss matters of relative interest and concern regarding our children. This group provides regular forums for Pupil Personnel Services and parents to share information and discuss pertinent issues; develops, maintains and shares tools and a resource guide; and raises awareness of children with special needs. We host monthly workshops educating parents on special-needs topics. We also hold support groups, fun meet-ups for the kids and donate educational supplies to the Franklin Public School Special Education programs. We are a volunteer-run organization and need donations to help alleviate the costs of the above-mentioned programs. Franklin Police join Home Base First Responder No-Shave November Campaign

If you have noticed that the male Franklin Police officers have started allowing their facial hair to grow, it is not a change in department policy - except for the month of November.

The Franklin Police Department will join other area departments in the 3rd annual No-Shave November Campaign. November 1, 2017 is the official start to the Home Base First Responder No-Shave November Campaign. 

MBTA Transit Officer, Purple Heart recipient, and former Home Base patient Kurt Power embarks on a month-long journey to support Home Base and honor his fallen brothers through the No-Shave November campaign. 

Officers and other First Responders pledge to forgo shaving and grooming in order to evoke conversation, raise awareness and break the stigma associated with post-traumatic stress (PTS) and other invisible wounds of war.

Franklin Police join Home Base First Responder No-Shave November Campaign

"Looking around at the Franklin Police department, it’s easy to tell which officers are breaking a customary rule by participating in No Shave November. 

Twenty members of the department, along with dozens of other police officers across Massachusetts, have put down their razors to raise awareness – and money – for the Home Base veteran and family care organization. Home Base provides services for veterans suffering from PTSD and raises awareness about suicide among veterans. 

“We have a lot of veterans in the department, and they continue to serve, not only their country but their community,” said Sgt. Brian Johnson. “This was seen as a way to generate awareness and raise money for a good cause.”

Dedham, MA-Noting that some Norfolk County families are more worried about putting food on the table this holiday season than putting lights on a Christmas tree, Register of Deeds William O'Donnell is asking people to contribute to the 11th Annual Registry of Deeds food drive, starting Monday November 20th and running through Friday December 29th.    "There is no doubt that Norfolk County is a destination place to live and to work. However, there are people throughout the county that are truly hurting who need a helping hand. We, at the Registry can see firsthand how people are being impacted from our monthly foreclosure numbers. Adversity can strike in a number of ways, from a job lay-off to an unexpected medical catastrophe or just from a case of misfortune".    Today according to the latest Project Bread statistics 1 out of every 10 households in Massachusetts is considered food insecure. And cases of food insecurity have risen by 24% since the year 2000. "Hunger is a year round concern, but it is especially acute during the holidays with the rise of heating bills and children home from school, meaning extra food costs," noted O'Donnell.    Rene Feureman, Director of the Brookline Food echoed the Register's concerns. "As we near the holidays, there is defintely more of a need for food. Some families would like to prepare a holiday meal. Others, as the winter cold sets in, are looking for comfort food to keep them warm. While others, the elderly particularly, are looking to stock-up in case there are winter storms."    Non-perishable food items can be brought directly to the Registry of Deeds located at 649 High Street in Dedham. A donation bin will be set-up in the Registry building lobby which is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 4:30PM. Suggested donations include canned goods, breakfast cereals, pasta, sauces, toiletries and paper products.    If you can't get here to drop off food, you can check the Registry's website.at www.norwfolkdeeds.org for a location in your community. "Working together, we can truly make a huge difference this holiday season," concluded Register O'Donnell. "SCAM ALERT. The Franklin Police Department has been made aware of an ongoing scam where unsolicited calls are being made by individuals who identify themselves as the "American Police Officers Alliance". 

These calls request donations. 

Please be advised that information we have received from the Essex County District Attorney's Office who investigated this organization, concluded that this group is highly suspect, and residents should consider this before giving to this, or any group that they are not completely familiar with."

"While every veteran of war is important, there are some, going back 200 years in history of this country, who have received no recognition for their sacrifices because of the color of their skin. 

Susan Elliot, a writing tutor at Dean College and history buff, took it upon herself to honor Charles Paine, a forgotten Revolutionary War veteran, this Veteran’s Day by placing a sign next the memorial on Franklin town common. 

The sign commemorates an African-American slave that served in the Continental Army from 1777 to 1780. Though historical documents prove he was a soldier, his name was omitted from the memorial, because he was also omitted from official enlistment records. 

“What got me fired up is that I went to the town common and he wasn’t listed,” said Elliot, who lives in Milford. “This is part of the whitewashing of history.”
