"Thanks for what you do" goes both ways!

One of your subscribers sent you this message using FeedBlitz's "Contact the Publisher" feature. The message is:
"Hello, I just wanted to reach out and extend my appreciation for all you do summarizing and providing all this information to the town.
I can only imagine how much work goes into this, but my family and I look forward to these emails and keeping us informed on local happenings and we truly appreciate all you do with this newsletter!"
Thank you, your note is much appreciated.

I do this because it is needed and no one can come close to the complete coverage I (really "we") provide especially with the close coordination with Franklin TV and Public Radio.

Our vision is one portal branded in an "umbrella fashion" as Franklin (MA) News (Facebook) (or Franklin.news/) so all who want the info can get it in the media format of their choice.

You'll be able to
  • Watch (3 cable channels, and 3 YouTube channels)
  • Listen to live radio 24x7x365 at 102.9 FM in the local area or from anywhere at wfpr.fm
  • Read the digital news from the Town and School meetings reported on
The better informed this community is, the better we will be prepared to appropriately deal with all the challenges life presents.

I really do mean "we". You all deserve kudos as well for sending in comments,  questions, and items of community interest to share. I don't do this alone. The multiple dozens of 'informers' are critical to what you all get to see.

It is all of us working together to deliver the news.

Thank you

Six high school football players have died in recent weeks. It’s time to take action | US sports | The Guardian

"Six teenagers have now died while playing school football in less than three weeks. This astonishing rash of football-related school deaths should be understood as nothing less than a public health emergency. It is also a clarion call to question why we are exposing our young people to such a dangerous activity at all, much less in institutions designed to care for and nurture them.

The first four of these recent deaths were due to apparently heat-related causes and the latest two due to head trauma. Five of the athletes were high schoolers, the eldest only 16, and one was a 13-year-old eighth-grade student. The young athletes who died were Ovet Gomez-Regalado, age 15, in Kansas City; Semaj Wilkins, age 14, in Alabama; Jayvion Taylor, age 15, in Virginia; Leslie Noble, age 16, in Maryland; Caden Tellier, age 16, in Alabama; and Cohen Craddock, age 13, in West Virginia.

This is in addition to the death of 18-year-old college freshman Calvin Dickey Jr, who died on 12 July, two days after passing out at a Bucknell University practice from sickle cell-related rhabdomyolysis.

There should be no sugar-coating what has transpired here, nor any claims of coincidence. We already know that football can cause life-altering harm. Between 2018 and 2022, at least 11 amateur or professional football players have died in the US from heat-related causes. We also know that every 2.6 years of participation in tackle football – a sport many American kids are enrolled in as young as five – doubles the chances of contracting the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). We also now know that football players have a 61% greater chance compared to athletes in other organized sports to develop Parkinson’s disease, a risk that is 2.93 times higher for college and professional players."

Respectfully, the Library and Senior Center calendars are too full of events to include all their events so we tend to focus on the major events. Town and School meetings are also kept separate. Links for all the calendars are shared here:

School Committee Meeting gets feedback issue resolved, approves handbooks, hears of bus plan & more (audio)

FM #1266 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1266 in the series.

This session shares the Franklin (MA) School Committee meeting held on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. 7 members participated; 5 in chambers, two were remote (Callaghan, Sompally).

Quick recap:

  • Superintendent Giguere reported on the opening professional development days Monday & Tuesday; all together at FHS Monday with a welcome, breakfast, group activities and a student produced video; teachers and staff with school based activities

  • Staffing update: hired 44 positions this summer, 6 teacher vacancies, 9 ESP vacancies, and 9 other non-union vacancies remain as of 8/27/24. As noted in follow up questions, this # is a little higher than prior years, complicated by 48 resignations during the summer, most in the past 2 weeks, hiring process still underway.

  • Transportation update: 31 remain on wait list after a new bus was added to the school 'fleet'. The bus provider has the busses and drivers we need, the same number of busses as last year was what they started with, then added one Monday. There is one other bus funded by the State for the students at the hotel.

    • Transportation letter referenced ->   https://www.franklinmatters.org/2024/08/fps-letter-providing-school.html

    • All students registered and paid (partially or fully) by deadline are slotted for a bus

    • 31 students remain on a wait list after one bus was added

    • Bus passes won't be checked until Sept 16 to allow for the "who's really riding, who's not" process to get sorted out

    • Bus capacity in some cases may be high but those at the scheduled stops will get a ride at least thru the 16th

  • Discussion and approval (7-0 vote via roll call) for the school handbooks; discussion focused on the changes some significant, some minor to the handbooks vs. prior year, photos of the slides for FHS, middle schools, and elementary schools are available in one album (when presentation gets updated to meeting page, link will be added) https://photos.app.goo.gl/hcjHqYuWPNvg4ca8A

  • FY25 Revised Final Budget Vote - I recommend approval of the FY25 School Budget in the amount of $77,470,190.00 as discussed ** Motion to approve, second, passes via roll call by 7-0 vote. Note that the "base" for next year would be $1m less than this due to the one time funds

  • Policy 2nd Reading/Adoption - I recommend adoption of Policy GBEBD - Online Fundraising and Solicitation - Crowdfunding as discussed. ** Motion to approve, second, passes via roll call by 7-0 vote
