Fallen Hero: Private Daniel E. McCahill, U.S. Army

Private Daniel E. McCahill, U. S. Army, was born on June 11, 1919, son of Bernard and Mary McCahill. Daniel lived with his parents, three brothers and two sisters at 13 Pinehurst Street.
Daniel attended the Franklin Schools and graduated from Franklin High School in 1938. He was a fine athlete affectionately known as “long Dan” or “big Dan” who played a hard fast brand of basketball. Dan continued his basketball play in an independent league after high school.
Daniel answered his country’s call on March 21, 1941 and after a period of training with the 182nd infantry division was sent to the South Pacific war zone. Private Daniel McCahill was killed in action on November 11, 1942 at the Battle of Guadacanal. This campaign is well known for its pivotal role in turning the tide of the war in favor of the Allies in the Pacific Theatre.
Pvt Daniel E. McCahill was 23 years old at the time of his death while engaged in combat fighting to recapture Guadacanal in World War II.

Both the FHS field hockey team and girls soccer team advance in playoffs

Via Twitter, Franklin TV, and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the Fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Monday, November 10, 2025

Girls Soccer = Division 1 = #11 Lincoln-Sudbury, 1 @ #6 Franklin, 2 – Final

"When Franklin fell behind inside the opening 10 minutes of Monday night’s Div. 1 Sweet Sixteen match at Pisini Stadium, the Panthers weren’t worried. They had scored at least two goals in every match this season and were averaging just under four goals per outing.

There were still 72 minutes remaining, plenty of time to get the attack firing and make a comeback.

Franklin tied the game at the half-hour mark of the first half and sophomore Lily Strong went on an incredible solo run early in the second to put the Panthers in front. Behind one of the team’s best defensive efforts of the season, Franklin pulled out a 2-1 win over No. 11 Lincoln-Sudbury and advanced to its second quarterfinal in three years.

“We have been playing at a significantly higher level in the second half of the season, but we hadn’t yet done it for a full 80 minutes,” said Franklin coach Jodi Klein. “We just did and against a really good team. Before the game, the captains were getting everyone pumped up, the captains were leading, their energy was at an all-time high.”

Field Hockey = Division 1 = #10 Hopkinton, 1 @ #2 Franklin, 2 – Final (2OT)

"Franklin took the lead in Monday afternoon’s Div. 1 quarterfinal at Beaver Pond Field midway through the second quarter. When the horn sounded at the end of the fourth quarter, the scoreboard showed that the Panthers were still in front by a goal, but Hopkinton forced a corner so even though the clock read 0:00 the game wasn’t over.

Senior Ella Fowler got space and time at the edge of the circle and hit a rocket into the far corner, tying the game in the most dramatic (or devastating, depending on your perspective) way possible.

It was the kind of moment that could derail a team, especially one as young as Franklin, but the Panthers regrouped, reset, and regained control of the game. The hosts dominated in 7-on-7 and one minute into the second overtime period freshman midfielder Cade Taccini was tripped while driving at goal.

The officials gave a penalty stroke for denial of a clear scoring opportunity. Taccini was the pick to step up to the spot to try and win the game. She coolly rifled the ball into the top corner, giving the goalie no chance, sealing a 2-1 win, and sending the Panthers to their third state semifinal in the past five seasons."

FHS Volleyball "Sweeps Andover To Book Spot In D1 State Semis" on Sunday (video)

Via Twitter, Franklin TV, and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the Fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Sunday, November 9, 2025

Volleyball = Division 1 = #5 Franklin, 3 @ #4 Andover, 0 – Final
Franklin TV video available for replay -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1562sPcy1oM

By Jason Cooke || ValleySportsDaily Editor
"With No. 4 Andover applying pressure in the first two sets of Sunday’s quarterfinal bout with No. 5 Franklin, the Panthers leaned on their veterans who had been there before to cruise to a 3-0 win by way of 25-20, 25-22, 25-8 at Andover High School.

Franklin (21-2) advances to play perhaps the hottest team in the tournament in No. 16 Newton South, which has downed No. 1 Chelmsford and No. 8 Brookline en route to the Final Four. That game is slated for Wednesday at Westwood High School (7:15 p.m.).

A talented Golden Warriors team made Franklin work for its second semifinal appearance in the last three years. But Makayla Kuykendall (14 kills, 10 digs, two aces, two blocks) and Olivia Alberti (eight kills, two aces, four blocks) ensured a clean sweep."
