FHS games to watch for Fall girls soccer, golf, and field hockey

Reminder that HockomockSports.com changed to a subscription model in July. I have a subscription to view and share the FHS results that they provide. If you want to view all the worth Hockomock League reporting they do, subscribing is a good thing. It is quite reasonable. The subscription link is provided below.

There is a series of "games to watch" for each of the sports this coming Fall season. I have selected the Franklin games that were highlighted thus far.

FHS girls soccer

OCTOBER 21ST – BISHOP FEEHAN @ FRANKLIN – 10:00AM

With the playoffs just around the corner, Franklin will take on Bishop Feehan in a battle of two teams with perennial title aspirations. Two of the most consistent programs in the state, each fall it’s expected that they will be among the top seeds in Div. 1. They met in the 2013 D1 South final, with Franklin winning 2-1, and last year were the No. 3 and No. 8 seeds. In late October, the Panthers will be aiming to clinch a fourth straight league title, but this will be a good non-league diversion to see how they match up with another state power. It’s scheduled for an early morning kick-off but it will be worth getting out of bed to see these teams square off in a playoff preview.

FHS golf

OCTOBER 11TH – FRANKLIN @ KING PHILIP – 3:00

Speaking of heavyweight battles, here’s the Kelley-Rex’s version of that. Just days after the reigning Davenport champs clash, Franklin and King Philip will hit the links at Wentworth Hills for their second meeting of the season. It’s very possible this one will have severe title implications as both teams only have one division match left after this meeting. Both the Panthers and Warriors return most of their starting lineups so expectations are high for this season. The winner of this one will pick up some momentum heading into the championship at Thorny Lea.

FHS field hockey

SEPTEMBER 13TH – FOXBORO @ FRANKLIN – TBA

This should be an early-season treat for the second straight year. The two defending division champs will go head-to-head on the Beaver Street Turf in the second week of the regular season. The Panthers rolled through the majority of its league schedule last year, except for one team: Foxboro. The Warriors were the lone Hock team to take a point away as the two teams battled to a scoreless draw early on in the season. Foxboro is always very strong defensively and this was a testament to that based on Franklin’s offensive success the rest of the season. This will be another great battle.

OCTOBER 16TH – KING PHILIP @ FRANKLIN – 3:45

Franklin has won four straight Kelley-Rex championships in a row and their biggest challenger during that span has been King Philip. The Panthers will travel to Wrentham in the opening week of games so that will be a good early-season test but we’ve circled the second meeting between the two. It will mark the start of the final stretch of five games against division opponents so that will inflate its importance. KP graduated a large senior class but has a lot of their weapons back in the fold this year as they try to dethrone Franklin.

FHS Panthers

Thursday is International Overdose Awareness Day, will you join us?

#IOAD We are just under a week away from International Overdose Awareness Day. Every year on August 31st, we join our local, state, federal, and international partners to recognize the impact substance use and overdose have had to those we love and those we have lost.   This year, we are honored to partner with HealthyKP to host a moving memorial in 5 communities. The purpose of this vigil is to bring local and real visibility to the sensitive and often overlooked disease of addiction. This 30 minute event will host a moment of silence, prayer, and a community member speaking about their lived experience. We will also host a memorial table to place pictures and memories of those we have lost to an overdose.  Together, we will say their names.   Will you join us?   We invite you to bring a picture of our loved one to place on our table of remembrance    Flag displays reflecting the 2,357 Massachusetts community members who lost their life to addiction in 2022 will be created on the Wrentham, Franklin, and Millis town commons.  The numbers continue to rise - In 2022, Massachusetts saw a 2.5% increase in overdose fatalities between 2021 and 2022 and a 9.1% increase from pre-pandemic 2016.  - Fentanyl was present in 93% of fatal overdoses where a toxicology report was present - Cocaine was present in 53% of fatal overdoses where a toxicology report was present - 47% of all opioid-related overdose deaths were between 25 and 44 years old; 43% were between 45 and 64 years old How You Can Help - Become an ally! Listen and learn from those with lived experience. We at SAFE would love to introduce you to those in recovery who are open to sharing their story and answering the questions you may have - Create a baseline understanding. The opioid epidemic continues to shift and evolve. It is important to create both a baseline understanding of addiction and the opportunities our community members have to access support - Support local initiatives. Headlines and statistics are important, but healthy communities are the lifeline to recovery and healing. Supporting programs that directly meet with families, youth, and individuals alike to mitigate substance use and provide education on the link between mental wellness and addiction is crucial for long-term change.  - Become a SAFE BUSINESS. State Representative Jeffrey Roy Secures $50,000 for Franklin Food Pantry’s Capital Campaign

Massachusetts Legislature Allocates Funds to Address Food Insecurity in the Commonwealth

The Franklin Food Pantry, a private, nonprofit organization offering supplemental food assistance in Franklin, Massachusetts, and the surrounding community, was allocated $50,000 in the Massachusetts Fiscal Year 2024 State Budget. State Representative Jeffery Roy assisted in securing the much-needed funding for The Pantry’s capital campaign, which will support enhanced client programs and services, and subsidize the purchase, renovation, and maintenance of a new building located at 341 W Central Street in Franklin.

Since moving to its new location, The Pantry has seen a sharp increase in client visits. This past July, average weekly visits to The Pantry increased by 35 percent compared to the same month last year. Pantry staff attributes the increased client need to the continued high cost of food, housing, utilities, clothing, and other expenses.

“The Franklin Food Pantry is essential to Franklin and surrounding towns, providing supplemental food assistance to more than 1,300 individuals each year,” said State Representative Jeffery Roy (D-Franklin). “The Pantry’s new building offers access to nutritious food in a dignified, modernized, larger space and I am pleased to advocate for such a worthy community partner.”

The state budget also designated funding for no-cost school meals for Massachusetts public school children in grades K-12, including the nearly 5,000 children enrolled in the Franklin Public Schools.

 

“The Franklin Food Pantry is committed to addressing child-level food insecurity, and we are extremely proud of our advocacy work with Project Bread and the Greater Boston Food Bank to ensure students are well nourished,” said Tina Powderly, Executive Director, Franklin Food Pantry. “We are grateful to Rep. Jeff Roy, Sen. Becca Rausch, Governor Maura Healey, and the entire Massachusetts Legislature for making universal school meals free for all and investing in our children and their future.”

The Franklin Food Pantry also partners with the Franklin Public Schools to provide meals and snacks to children over the weekend. As with all services at The Pantry, the Weekend Backpack Program is free to clients and depends on support and donations from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other strategic partners.
