Social Security Matters: Celebrate the ADA and Ticket to Work During Disability Pride Month

July is Disability Pride Month, a month-long celebration to commemorate the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The landmark legislation was signed into law on July 26, 1990. It guarantees that people with disabilities can enjoy the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

The law prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in schools, workplaces, transportation, and other spaces and places open to the public.

Our Ticket to Work program relates to the employment piece of the ADA. It celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. President Bill Clinton signed the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999 that created the program. The goal is to help more people with disabilities go to work, reach financial independence, and reduce or eliminate their need for benefits.

Master Plan Update Cmte meeting runs long, acknowledges work to be done, schedule slipping (audio)

FM #1250 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1250 in the series. 

This session shares the Franklin (MA) Master Plan Update Committee meeting held on Wednesday, July 24, 2024. 11 members participated, 10 in the 3rd floor training room, 1 remote (Frongillo), 2 were absent (Williams, Power).

Quick recap:

• Meeting opened by Chair Jones, round of updates from each subcommittee chair, many have not met since the public hearing to incorporate the feedback gathered, one had, others scheduling, or have scheduled such sessions

• Much time spent reviewing the internal committee working doc on objectives section by section

• Doc formatting to be worked on by Beta & Barrett to set up goals, objectives, and actions for subcommittees to fill in the responsibilities, priorities, etc.

• Next meeting for the committee scheduled for Aug 21 to work on the implementation steps, as well as iron out the cross points among the subcommittees, and continue work on the language for the objectives to be voted on by the committee

• Discussion around if this could be accomplished in the next session, or if another session is needed. The current timeline for presentation to the Planning Board and Town Council in September acknowledged that it is not going to be met. As the session was over an hour longer than planned, side conversation between Taberner, Jones, and Beta/Barrett to be held and then provide an update to the committee on possible timeline adjustments

EpiPen; a safe idea used by the Franklin Police

Franklin Police EpiPen Program

Over the last year, Franklin Police Officers have been carrying adult and child EpiPens (epinephrine) with their daily first aid equipment. To date, the Epipen program has been instrumental in helping those experiencing anaphylaxis. One call came recently where an individual was stung by a bee and did not know they were allergic to bees. They were experiencing anaphylactic shock and could not breathe. 

The EpiPen program was initiated by Officer David Ricci. Traditionally we have utilized our partners from the Franklin Fire Department for administering EpiPens. Dave is one of our department medical instructors and served in the United States Navy as a Navy Corpsman.

Another officer brought it to Dave’s attention that we carry several items in our medical kit but not EpiPens. All officers are trained in administering EpiPens in our yearly in-service training. Dave realized, that if we’re trained and capable of saving someone’s life with a tool, why not have the tool ourselves? We interact with people who may not know they have allergies or those who might not be able to afford the medication. Dave found that very few police departments in the state carry EpiPens.

From there Dave got buy-in from the department and went to work. His proposal included: a description of the program; the resources to acquire the medication; the laws allowing us to carry and administer the medication; the benefits of carrying the medication; the risks of administering the medication; a list of our calls for service related to potential anaphylaxis; and a cost analysis to determine yearly expenditures.

Dave obtained a memorandum of agreement from the Medical Advisor for police departments in the state and a controlled substance registration through the Department of Public Health. From there Chief Lynch signed off on the initiative and EpiPens were purchased for the department. On any given shift there are 6 EpiPens ready for use across our patrol division to help save a life.

International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) is observed each August 31. On this day, communities worldwide come together to reduce overdose stigma, increase understanding and awareness, remember those who died of overdose, and prevent drug-related harm.

For IOAD, SAFE will host a community vigils from 6 – 7 PM at Franklin and Wrentham Town Commons. They will also work with community members to place memorial flags across the region.

"Toxic PFAS “forever chemicals” are widely added to pesticides, and are increasingly used in the products in recent years, new research finds, a practice that creates a health threat by spreading the dangerous compounds directly into the US’s food and water supply.

The analysis of active and inert ingredients that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved for use in pesticides proves recent agency claims that the chemicals aren’t used in pesticides are false.

The researchers also obtained documents that suggest the EPA hid some findings that show PFAS in pesticides.

About 14% of all active ingredients in the country’s pesticides are PFAS, a figure that has doubled to more than 30% of all ingredients approved during the last 10 years."
