FHS field hockey tops KP on Thursday 6-3

Via HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Thursday, October 13, 2022. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Field Hockey = Franklin, 6 @ King Philip, 3 – Final 

– Franklin’s Haley Wernig scored a pair of second quarter goals inside a five minute span to give the Panthers some breathing room and Kaitlyn Carney’s third quarter tally added key insurance as Franklin survived a tough test from King Philip. The teams traded goals in the first quarter with Payten Crandall’s first goal of the game giving the visitors the lead. Wernig scored twice in the second to take the lead again before KP got one back, cutting the Panthers’ lead to 3-2 at half. Carney scored the lone goal of the third to make it 4-2, and Crandall’s second of the game late in the fourth pushed it to 5-2. KP pulled one back but Franklin once again responded with a goal with just over two minutes to play from Chloe Essam. Leah Santoro, Makenzie McDevitt and Lauren Barriero each had a goal for the Warriors. Devon Barry made six saves in net for Franklin while Haley Bright turned away nine shots for KP.

Volleyball = Franklin, 0 @ King Philip, 3 – Final

"When the teams met for the first time, just three games into the new season, Franklin earned a three-set sweep on its home court in a match that was much closer than its overall final score (two of the sets went beyond 25 points). King Philip hosted the second meeting on Thursday night at the Wooden Gym and the opening set was just as competitive.

The Warriors were able to pull out the first set this time around, winning it 27-25, and KP carried the momentum into a 3-0 (27-25, 25-16, 25-19) sweep, a 12th straight win, and a split of the season series.

“I think that for us it was huge,” KP coach Kristen Geuss explained. “I think it gave us a little boost of confidence going into the second set. That first set could’ve gone either way, much like the first time we played them. Just having a win gets us going even more and that momentum takes us into the next set.”

"commitments and authorizations under state law that are not fully kept by the Commonwealth"

"THE STATE HAS a $1.2 billion shortfall in aid promised to cities, towns, and school districts, Auditor Suzanne Bump concluded in a report released Thursday. 

The report looked at several major categories of state aid and identified $711.4 million in unfunded mandates related to school aid; $448.3 million related to school transportation; and $103.3 million in government aid, mainly related to the Community Preservation Act. 

“The state should be accountable to fulfill its funding obligations to cities and towns,” Bump said in an interview. “These are mandates that have long been on the books, and it just seems it’s easier to focus on the new and forget about the old.” 

State law prohibits unfunded mandates, requiring the Legislature to fund anything it requires cities and towns to do. But practically, lawmakers have often ignored those obligations. For example, they regularly appropriate only a portion of mandated expenses for school transportation.  

“Insufficient state appropriations or allocations have left programs underfunded, and some programs have seen financial obligations completely ignored despite a commitment under law,” the report says. "

Franklin 5K Turkey Trot Tradition Continues, sign up now for the great start Thanksgiving morning!

11th Annual Family Fun Run Benefits Franklin Food Pantry 

The Franklin Food Pantry is pleased to announce that the annual Franklin Turkey Trot is back for its 11^th year! The race will take place on Thanksgiving, November 24, 2022, at 8:00 am and for the first time post-Covid, breakfast will be provided for all participants! In addition, all registered runners will be automatically entered in the Turkey Trot Raffle for a chance to win terrific prizes from local businesses! The 5K starts at 91 Jordan Road, Franklin, MA and follows a lollipop route in a local neighborhood.  

 

The $20 early bird registration fee is effective through October 18 and then increases to $25. The registration fee goes directly to the Franklin Food Pantry, keeping donations local to help feed those in need. Participants can register online here.  The Pantry will not be able to accept food donations instead of the fee.  Runners can also purchase a t-shirt directly from the registration page to commemorate their experience.

"The Turkey Trot is such a wonderful tradition in our community, and we are incredibly grateful that through this event, we can continue to meet our neighbor's needs for food, services and programs. As we navigate a post-Covid world, we will extend our hybrid distribution model, offering both in-person and curbside distribution. We are also expanding our home delivery and mobile pantries to reach those who cannot come to us," said Tina Powderly, Executive Director of the Franklin Food Pantry. "Last year we raised an incredible $35,000! With food prices increasing nationally by 13.1% and locally by 10.9% this year, it's more expensive than ever to serve our neighbors in need. Funds from events like the Turkey Trot are critical to our mission to provide hunger relief and vital services to our community."  

 

There is still time to become a sponsor! There are several opportunities for local businesses to sponsor the race. Funds received from sponsorships are used to cover costs associated with the event, including the race registration company, timing technology, insurance, and security details. About the Franklin Food Pantry 

The Franklin Food Pantry offers supplemental food assistance and household necessities to more than 1,100 individuals per year. The Franklin Food Pantry is not funded by the Town of Franklin. As a private, nonprofit organization, we depend on donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and other strategic partners. We are grateful for our many partnerships, including that with the Greater Boston Food Bank, that allow us to achieve greater buying power and lower our costs. 

Donations and grants fund our food purchases, keep our lights on, and put gas in our food truck. Other programs include home delivery, Weekend Backpack Program for Franklin school children in need, mobile pantry, emergency food bags and holiday meal packages. The Pantry is located at 43 W. 47th Annual Franklin Newcomers Craft Fair is scheduled for Nov. 5, 2022

The 47th Annual Franklin Newcomers & Friends Craft Fair is set for Sat. November 5, 2022 from 9 AM to 3 PM.

It will still be held at Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School, 147 Pond St., Franklin, after taking a break following two years of COVID.

This year, the craft fair will be held at the school’s gymnasium. Plenty of space for mingling, browsing, and shopping. Enter at the left of the building instead of the front doors. Lots of parking right in front of the entrance.

47th Annual Franklin Newcomers Craft Fair

This popular and well-established event features hand-crafted items from artists throughout New England. You’ll find a wonderful selection of items to give yourself or to recognize a birthday, holiday or any other special occasion.

Here’s a sample of what you can buy: home décor and housewares, jewelry,  paper crafts, pets, wood crafts, glass crafts, handbags, health and wellness products, food, holiday, art and photography, bath and body, adult and children’s clothing and accessories.

The club is accepting donations for the Franklin Food Pantry. The entry fee is $3 for people 12 years of age and older.

– Franklin got its second clean sheet in as many days, holding on for a win that moves the Panthers one point ahead of KP in the league title race ahead of Friday’s showdown. Lauren Mitchell and Emma Tremblay both played well in the Stoughton defense, helping keep Franklin to one goal. Katrina Varnum made 11 saves for the Black Knights.

Boston Globe: "A new master plan could help transform Boston Common into a ‘better version’ of itself"

When I worked in Boston, visiting the Boston Common or the Public Garden was something to do as a break during the workday on good weather. A new "Master Plan" has just been revealed to bring about some improvements to the space on the Common. 

All this to lead to holding a place for Franklin's Open Space plan and Mast Plan which both are supposed to begin an update process next year. There will be public meetings, survey's, etc. to craft our own Master Plan for what Franklin should be like in the future. Stay tuned. This will be an important effort to participate in and/or at least be aware of.

"The popular playground on Boston Common, which draws children from across the city and beyond, would nearly triple in size. A revamp of the equally popular Frog Pond would include multiple fountains, while a soccer pitch would be added to the athletic fields. More restrooms, everywhere. And, a place to get a beer or glass of wine.

Those are just a few of the big changes that could be coming over the next decade to the nation’s oldest public park, according to a new master plan for the Common that was released by the city and Friends of the Public Garden on Wednesday.

The grand reimagining calls for both ambitious new projects and more subtle improvements, with a goal of making the Common even more inviting and navigable. So, dog owners would have an enclosed park to let their pets run free. The Parkman Bandstand would have a ramp for people with disabilities. And the athletic fields would welcome soccer and basketball players for the first time."
