Tracey's story, to blog or not to blog

Via Tracey at The Little Shop of Oils starts a blog called "The Little Corner"

A special note from me…๐Ÿงก

Hey everyone, Tracey here. I’ve been working on something deeply personal and important to me, and today, I’m both excited and terrified to share it with you.✨

To blog or not to blog…that’s been the question for a long time.๐Ÿค”

I’ve kept this part of my story tucked away, hidden behind the scenes, but now, I’ve realized that vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness. So, despite the twisting in my stomach, I’m taking a leap of faith.✨

My first blog dives into a journey close to my heart – navigating life with MS while running The Little Shop. It’s my story of challenges, triumphs, and the raw realities of balancing health and entrepreneurship…

Thank you so much for following along and for your endless support …it means the world to me ❤️

"Cancer is no longer a death sentence and shouldn’t be taboo”

Via the social media feeds, a good Franklin story to share:

Franklin resident Susan Rosen sat slumped on her couch in a quiet house — her two children were at school — and let the news sink in: She had stage 4 metastatic breast cancer.
“I’m never going to be a grandmother,” she told her husband through sobs.
But that was four years ago. Susan, now 52, no longer views incurable cancer as a death sentence. The local wife and mother is one of a growing number of people managing the disease as a chronic illness, thanks to new, less toxic treatments that are tailored to each patient’s needs.
“Things are getting better every day in regards to treatments,” Susan said. “This is the best I’ve felt in years.”

New nature blog for Franklin's natural areas

Attention nature-lovers of Franklin, MA: As part of my internship with the Franklin Conservation Commission, I have created a public nature blog for the natural areas around town. The blog provides a great opportunity for citizens science, or gathering information/data from the general public, to keep an inventory on the flora and fauna of the sites.
In addition, the blog will be used as an aid to track the impacts of climate change as the areas experience seasonal transitions.
If you utilize the beautiful conservation areas in Franklin and would like to contribute to the blog by reporting a sighting, please go to https://franklinmanature.wordpress.com/ and follow the instructions.
Thank you!

"Package thefts rise during the holiday season"

A timely post to share from the MA Consumer Affairs blog

"With holiday shopping in full swing, millions of consumers are expected to ship gifts to their family and friends. However, sending the packages to the right address does not guarantee that they will be received by the intended recipient. Package thefts rise during the holiday season, and some thieves will even follow delivery trucks to scoop up packages as soon as they are delivered.

To make sure your package is properly received this holiday season:

  • Require a signature upon delivery
  • Request tracking and delivery confirmation
  • Insure your packages
  • Specify delivery instructions, such as “leave at back door”
  • Arrange to pick up packages at the post office or delivery service location
  • Ask a friend or neighbor to look out for your order and accept/pick up your packages
  • Ship packages to your workplace if your employer allows it

If you are sending a package, let the recipient know that it is coming and when to expect it to arrive (and not to open it just yet!). Be sure to follow up with them to make sure it was received."

Franklin Blog: ECDC Principal Page

Kelty Kelly, the principal at ECDC, is writing a blog.

Welcome to the F.X. O'Regan Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) Principal Page! Here families and community members will find updates, information and resources, as well as pictures and commentary from ECDC Principal, Kelty Kelley.

A new post highlights kindergarten registration information for ECDC families. Note that while this information is targeted for the ECDC families, those who may have children attending ECDC in a future school year could find this useful.

Kindergarten Registration:
This year we are working to simplify and streamline the Kindergarten Registration process for current ECDC families. Here at ECDC, we will be collecting and coordinating the required documentation, as well as scheduling Kindergarten Screenings (once the dates become available). By taking these new steps, we will expedite your child’s registration and eliminate the need for you to attend the district-wide registration. Within the next week all families with children entering Kindergarten will receive a packet of information with more details!
You can read Kelty's full posting here

"There's a lot of efficiencies here"

Administrators will now discuss the terms of a contract with Whitsons. A contract would ultimately be signed by Town Administrator Jeffrey Nutting and does not need to be approved by the School Committee, Superintendent Maureen Sabolinski said.
Hoping a private company could better meet new federal and state nutrition requirements and have greater purchasing power than the current district-run program, the committee in April authorized the administrators to seek proposals to operate the food service. Whitsons, Sodexo, Aramark and Chartwells submitted proposals.
Administrators told the committee last night that they were impressed with Whitsons' dedication to cooking many foods from scratch, using less processed foods than competitors, selling competitively priced food, training cafeteria workers and offering allergy-free products and organic foods. They were also impressed with a visit to Attleboro schools, where Whitsons operates.
"We really felt they have the (capabilities) to meet the needs of all our students and offer a variety of foods," Sabolinski said.

If Franklin matters, you can help

I believe Franklin matters, hence the name for this site. I have written of how the site came to be and how it is my public service effort here.

I am realizing that as much as I can do, there is still more to be done and hence can use some help.
  • If you believe that Franklin, MA matters
  • If you have some skill in writing
  • If you have a willingness to learn some Web 2.0 tools
I would like to expand the writers on this site.
I would like to include those who have answered Yes to the questions above and would be willing to help.

In particular, there are Planning Board, Conservation Commission, and Design Review meetings that would be good to attend and report on. I have focused on the Town Council, School Committee, Finance Committee and Financial Planning Committee to "follow the money". These other areas are important to cover and I can not do it all. Nor would I attempt to.

So if you are reading this, you already maybe someone who can help.

If you'd like to explore what this would mean (and what help/training I would provide) please let me know.

You can comment or send me an email at shersteve@gmail.com.

Thank you!

Notice the new menu?

Maybe I am longing for spring to really arrive. Yes, April showers bring May flowers but did March need to drown us? Anyway, I am trying out some of the new features available for this Google blog.

Did you notice the new menu?

Located just below the header "Franklin Matters".

You'll now see a series of pages available to get to specific sections quickly.
  • The "Home" link will get you back to the top page from where ever you are.
  • The "Welcome" page will house the audio slideshow I did to help you navigate around the page. (Yes, I'll need to update it now that I have added this menu.)
  • The "Why Franklin Matters?" page combines why I do this as a public service with my disclosure posting.
  • The "Weekly podcast" page will get you to the Franklin Matters Weekly podcast posts. It should be easier to find a particular week there. All the details are still here but mixed with all the other posts.
  • The "Meeting Notes 2010", "Meeting Notes 2009", and "Meeting Notes 2008" do the same thing for each calendar year. They provide the link to each meeting or event that was reported on.
  • The "Important Links" brings above the fold easy access to other key links.

I hope this works better for you.

If you have any suggestions, please feel free to send me an email at shersteve@gmail.com

Year end activities

As 2009 winds down and we get ready for 2010, I'll spend sometime making adjustments to the site. For example, the meeting summaries for 2009 will move from the center column to the far right column. There will be a new box for the 2010 meeting summaries in the center column.

I will continue to feature items from the 2009 Annual Report while I work on my review of 2009. Each month will appear as it is ready.

I have some other changes I want to make to the web site to help make it easy to use. I'll announce those as they appear. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to drop me a line and let me know.

In the meantime, I anticipate overall activities will be light here. I will be sending time enjoying the holidays with family and friends. I trust you will take advantage of the time to do so with your circles.

Enjoy!

Wrentham has a blog

As a 'placeblogger', one who blogs about the place they live, I am always on the look out for others doing this. Patricia Coleman has just started her blog, "Wrentham Times".

I plan on reaching out to meet with her to compare notes but in the meantime, I have added her to the "Franklin Area Blogs" section. This section appears along the right column. Scroll down some to find it. It will show the most recent posting for each of the area blogs listed.

When you visit here, feel free to scroll down the page to see what else is happening amongst the Franklin area blogs.

new Real Estate blog

I am beginning to find new blogs on Franklin popping up. Kathy Stankard, a realtor and part of the ReMax network, has a new blog here.

In addition to providing information on the homes for sale, the blog provides insights on what is happening in the market. The two most recent posts are:

Why should I list now?
Okay, maybe the daffodils are not in bloom and there is another snowstorm in the forecast but a seller can truly capitalize on the buyers that have begun to get back out. There are six main advantages for a seller to list now (in the winter) instead of waiting until spring:
They're Baack!
Well, it seems as if many buyers just woke up from a long winter nap. Open houses lately bring in 6 or more people and the phone has been ringing--alot. This is great news since last year's real estate market was rather quiet overall. The low interest rates and low home prices seem to be prompting buyers to get out and purchase rather than the watch and wait approach of 2008.
I'll create a "Franklin blogs" section to pull together those I have already found and posted about earlier, I'll add the new ones that come along.

If you find a blog about Franklin that is not listed, please let me know. Bloggers love to get links!
