Back Up - Just Do It

The fact that you are reading this is the result of a very bad thing – followed in short order by a very good thing. The bad thing? My computer died. It was sudden and final on Thursday. I wasn’t there to witness its passing. I expected a quiet evening, only to be confronted by the Microsoft Blue Screen of Death. If ever there was a Greek or Roman god of digital stuff, that all-digital deity had it in for me. (Sigh!)

The good thing? Backup! My digital stuff – every last bit of my digital life – lives in three places. I accessed my backup files – typing this very missive and program schedule with my backup computer. Yes, I have one.

Digitally, this is not my first cataclysmic crash, nor will it be the last. How often? It happens roughly every 3-5 years. It’s never pleasant, but it is survivable.
Back Up - Just Do It
Back Up - Just Do It

Our lives are increasingly digital. Our computers and smartphones rule our day, making our lives easier, better – until they fail.

Failure is not an option. Not today.

That’s because backing up all my digital stuff is not an option.
It’s essential.

And – as always – Thank you for listening to wfpr●fm. And, thank you for watching.

by Pete Fasciano, Executive Director

P.S. It’s not too late to start a New Year’s resolution – backing up all your stuff.

Buy a small external hard drive. Then organize and make a backup copy of any digital files you regard as precious. Update your backup often, if not daily. Your future self will thank you.

My FM 101.3 Wins International Public Service Award

I simply can’t say enough about my staff, our listeners fans and followers, and the Radiothon Committee as a whole for coming through with a record breaking year, it’s amazing how local radio can still make things happen” said Tom McAuliffe, owner of My FM Media, as he accepted The 2018 Simpson Award for Community Service.

“The Simpson Award is one of the highest honors a local broadcaster can receive for community service,” explained T. David Luther, Executive Director of the International Broadcasters Idea Bank (IBIB), which bestows the prestigious award annually. “This award is given annually to only one radio station in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The Greater Milford region should be proud of the world-wide recognition given to My FM 101.3.

In a media environment dominated by large corporations and bottom-line priorities, the community service efforts at this independently owned and locally programmed radio station stand out. My FM’s initiative in raising over $100,000 in one day in 2018, as part of a My FM/Milford Regional Medical Center Radiothon, topped the list of reasons the IBIB Board of Directors recommended McAuliffe for the award.

Idea Bank President Mike Hulvey added “"The Simpson Award is one of the most coveted awards in Radio Broadcasting and symbolizes what the International Broadcasters Ideabank is all about....excellence in local community broadcasting. We're proud to honor Tom McAuliffe II, and the team at My FM Media. We're in awe of their use of radio, digital and social media to raise over $100,000 in one day to benefit their local community.

“Not only does this award recognize what our station has been about in the past, but also where our station is headed for the future as we develop into a true multi-media organization. This year’s Radiothon allowed us to shine a spotlight on all the media platforms that we now have at our disposal to assist clients, organizations and causes that are near and dear to our hearts. It’s the power of local radio combined with interactive & social media that carried the day for the 2018 My FM Radiothon” McAuliffe said.

The Simpson Award for Community Service is presented by the International Broadcasters Idea Bank (IBIB), an elite organization of 100 radio broadcasters located around the world. McAuliffe accepted the award from the IBIB’s international gathering, held this year at the Cape Codder Resort in Hyannis Cape Cod.

In addition to the now-annual Radiothon to benefit the Oliva Fund for Cancer Care at Milford Regional Medical Center, My FM supports local organizations by sponsoring and participating in more than 75 community events each year, including blood drives, parades, fairs, community pride days and a large annual Senior Expo.

MYFM 101.3/WMRC-First Class Radio Receives Two Prestigious Awards From Massachusetts Broadcasters Association

MyFM 101.3 announced today that it, and its staff, are the recipients of two prestigious awards from the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association. The radio station, which serves the market between Boston, Worcester, and Providence, received the Station of the Year merit award. Also, station on-air personality and MyFM's "Mr. Everything," Ray Auger, was honored with the "Above and Beyond" award.

The Station of the Year award is presented annually by the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association to the most outstanding radio station in the Commonwealth, and is open to all of the more than 180 radio stations in the Commonwealth. The merit "Station of the Year" is awarded to a Massachusetts radio station that exemplifies overall excellence in all phases of operation.

This year's judges, members of the Alaska Broadcasters Association, cited MyFM 101.3's extraordinary growth of audience and client base. But most importantly, stating that MyFM was the epitome of localism in broadcasting, and providing exceptional service to their listeners, community officials and local organizations.

Jordan Walton, President of the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association said, "MyFM is a shining example of what a radio station, hyper-focused on their local community, can accomplish."

This is the 6th time that MyFM 101.3/WMRC-First Class Radio has won Station of the Year.

"We are humbled and honored to be recognized again by the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association," says MyFM President Tom McAuliffe. "I've been part of this community for more than 27 years and look forward to serving it for many more."

The second accolade bestowed upon MyFM, the Above and Beyond award, was granted to My FM's "Mr. Everything" Ray Auger. The Association noted Auger's combined involvement in the local music scene and his status at MyFM/WMRC to help deliver new forms of artistic culture and fundraising support to the area. By becoming involved with local organizations, he uses his relationships and broadcasting skills to serve his community in an effective and entertaining fashion. In addition to his regular duties as a radio host, producer and promotions director, and so much more, Auger serves on the board of directors for Milford TV and Milford Performing Arts Center. He also hosted numerous community fundraising events, and weekly and monthly open mics and socials.

Walton added, "Ray Auger is the driving force behind much of the local content that MyFM provides listeners in the Greater Milford area. His tireless efforts to make a difference are why his station is thriving and why he deserved to be named our "Above and Beyond" award winner in 2017."

MyFM 101.3 is the sister station of WMRC-First Class Radio, which is one of the oldest locally owned and operated broadcast stations in Massachusetts. The company was purchased in 1990 by Tom McAuliffe, Sr. who was committed to the philosophy that a strong local radio station makes a strong connection to the community. His son, Tom McAuliffe II, took over as President in 2008 making the radio station the area's first choice for local news, weather, sports, traffic and community events.

John Fernandes = 2017 Butch Moore “You Touched Upon My Life” Award

My FM Media is proud to announce that John Fernandes of Milford has been selected as the recipient of the 2017 Butch Moore “You Touched Upon My Life” Award.

Butch Moore was a local singing legend that toured throughout Ireland, Europe, and the United States initially with The Capitol Showband and later with his wife Maeve as the famed singing duo Butch and Maeve. His signature song “You Touched Upon My Life” spoke volumes about a man that had touched the lives of so many around him with his music, his smile, his generosity, and his big heart. With Butch’s passing away in early 2001 WMRC-First Class Radio created this award in his honor.

John Fernandes, the former Milford Democratic Representative, spent 10 years in the Legislature before deciding not to seek a sixth term in the House this past November. Fernandes was first elected in 2006, but continued working at his law firm, something that he still does today. In his last session, Fernandes was elevated to House chairman of the Judiciary Committee, which allowed him to work on issues such as foreclosure and opioid abuse. Before joining the House, Fernandes served on the Milford Board of Selectman, Milford School Committee and school committee for the Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School. He is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Suffolk Law School.

Past recipients include Kevin Meehan, and (the late) Billy Hood, Linda Varney, Judge Francis and Virginia Larkin, Senator Richard T. Moore, Dr. Michael Fitzpatrick, Tony and Virginia Brenna, Chris Morcone, Gina Oliva-Tarolli, Tom McGovern, Paul Surapine, the Kimball Family, the Ellis Family, Justine Brewer, and Frank & Wendy Saba, and Tony Khoury.

The official award presentation for John Fernandes will take place at the My FM---Milford Area Chamber of Commerce St. Patrick’s Business After Hours on Thursday March 16th. The event will be held at Scioli’s Pizza Bar on Route 140 in Milford starting at 5PM.

For additional information contact My FM at (508) 473-1490, or to reserve tickets for the event contact The Milford Area Chamber of Commerce at (508) 473-6700.

WFPR - 102.9 FM - A Radio Station Grows in Franklin

"It was a very big week for our soon-to-be community radio station WFPR, here in Franklin. On Tuesday, Jan 17 our new broadcast tower suddenly sprouted up at Forge Hill. On Friday our transmitter housing was installed in place. After years of planning, paperwork and preparations, it’s all finally coming together.

This week we install our FM antenna system and transmission equipment. Thus
far, the winter weather gods have been reasonably accommodating, and once our antennas are installed, the larger technical challenges will be behind us.

We’re also wiring up / firing up the audio equipment in our radio studio. We plan
to begin our on-air broadcast tests on Thursday, February 2nd, Groundhog Day.
(Just like in Bill Murray’s movie, if we don’t get it quite right, we get a do–over).

During the next few months we’ll be conducting program tests while we plan our full program schedule to be launched in spring.

So, what do our programming plans look like? That’s where you come in. WFPR is Franklin’s community radio station. It will be powered and programmed by the passions of people who have something to say and music to play.

Could that be you? Consider volunteering. Help us to make WFPR into great community radio.

If you would like to learn more about how you can get involved in community radio, call us. 508-528-9377 – That’s 528-WFPR

Soon we’ll be able to say, “Thanks for listening”.

But, for now – as always, thanks for watching!"

Franklin Library: Behind the Paranormal with Paul and Ben Eno - Jan 19 - 6:30 PM

Behind the Paranormal with Paul and Ben Eno

Thursday, January 19, 6:30-8:00 p.m.

"Paul Eno and Ben Eno, the father-son co-hosts of the CBS Radio and WOON 1240 Boston/Providence destination show Behind the Paranormal will be appearing at the Franklin Public Library to discuss their new book, Beyond the Paranormal: Everything you know is wrong.

Journey through the paranormal from prehistory to the planets and our future, with over 50 bizarre cases of ghosts, poltergeists, demons, cryptids, UFOs, and other out-of-the-ordinary phenomena. Based on CBS and WOON 1240 radio scripts broadcast by a world-famous father-and-son team of paranormal investigators, their research has revealed bizarre connections not only between seemingly unrelated occurrences but also between the paranormal and our everyday lives, the history of our species, and our possible future as a race.
Meet inter-world parasites that might be farming your family or community, encounter disappearing buildings, and ghosts of people who aren’t dead. Push the boundaries as you find out what the Bible and other ancient documents might really mean, and what UFOs, invisible friends, and those footsteps in the attic could really be. Explaining the paranormal is not the problem. It’s handling the explanations. Everything you know is wrong.
Paul and Ben Eno are the father-son co-hosts of the CBS Radio and WOON 1240 Boston/Providence destination show Behind the Paranormal, with an estimated 3 million listeners. Paul began paranormal research in 1970 while studying for the priesthood. His mentors included parapsychologist Dr. Louisa Rhine, Fr. John J. Nicola (technical adviser for The Exorcist) and first-generation ghost hunters Ed and Lorraine Warren. He graduated from two seminaries, but was expelled from a third because of his paranormal work. He became an award-winning New England journalist and the author of seven books.
Ben Eno joined his dad’s adventures at the age of thirteen and, at sixteen, became the youngest syndicated broadcaster in America. Ben is a sound expert and a graduate of Emerson College in Boston."
