"On Tuesday, October 18th, 2022, the Energy and Sustainable Development Committee of the 495/MetroWest Partnership hosted a special presentation from State Representative Jeffrey N. Roy of Franklin, who serves as House Chairperson of the Legislature's Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy. The presentation focused on "An Act Driving Clean Energy and Offshore Wind," major climate legislation passed and signed into law in August 2022. The bill contains significant provisions related to clean energy investment, offshore wind, electric vehicles, and more."

Town Council authorizes purchase of Schmidt's Farm, witness 2 firefighter swear in's, and visit with State delegation (video)

In the regular meeting, Wednesday, Oct 19 the Town Council witnessed the swearing in of two firefighter/paramedics, spent time with the Franklin State delegation: Senate President Karen Spilka, Senator Becca Rausch, and State Representative Jeff Roy, before getting into the legislation portion of the meeting. 

The Council made two unanimous votes to approve and authorize CPA funding for the purchase of Schmidt's Farm via the first right of approval. The Community Preservation Committee had recommended the purchase in their meeting (10/4) and the Finance Committee had also unanimously approved in their meeting on Tuesday (10/18).

Additional funds ($50K) for the exterior renovation of the Red Brick school were also approved during the session. $200K had been initially budgeted for the repairs but the actual work has shown to be increased due to inflation hence, the additional funds required. $250,000 is the total for the exterior.

With the recent 2020 census results, the resulting redistricting has shifted the Senate districts so Senator Rausch's district covers all of Franklin where previously 3 precincts had been covered by Spilka. The session was the 'final' official visit of all three and the Council recognized Spilka with a proclamation for her service over the years. Both Rausch and Roy have contested elections this November.

Both FHS field hockey and volleyball teams post wins vs. North Attleboro on Wednesday

Via HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Field Hockey = Franklin, 10 @ North Attleboro, 1 – Final 

– Franklin came out of the gate flying with five first quarter goals and never let up on its way to a win over the Rocketeer. Kaitlyn Carney was nearly unstoppable, scoring four of her five goals in the opening 15 minutes of play while Emily Carney had the other goal. Haley Wernig, Shaw Downing, Ella Aldred, and Sydney Rogan also scored for the Panthers. North scored just past the midway point of the second as Caroline Folan scored off of an assist from Francesca Spencer. Julia Puccio orchestrated the goal by knocking down a Franklin aerial and started the counter with Spencer. Gracie Leary (six saves) and Eman Farid (12 saves) played well in net for North. Devon Barry and Megan Sullivan each made three saves for Franklin.

"MAURA HEALEY’S decision not to endorse Sen. Becca Rausch in her bid for reelection is fast becoming one of the more intriguing storylines of the election season.

The attorney general, the Democratic nominee for governor, has endorsed 17 of the 19 incumbent Democrats running for reelection in the Senate who are facing challengers. The only two she has not endorsed are Michael Brady of Brockton and Rausch.

At a debate on Monday sponsored by the Charles River Regional Chamber of Commerce, Rausch had a hard time explaining the political snub.

“This is such a distraction from the real issues in the race,” she said, noting she has been endorsed by Senate President Karen Spilka and Sen. Will Brownsberger, the president pro tempore. She said she and Healey are aligned because of their shared values. "

Where will the next pandemic come from? Maybe a glacier??

"The next pandemic may come not from bats or birds but from matter in melting ice, according to new data.

Genetic analysis of soil and lake sediments from Lake Hazen, the largest high Arctic freshwater lake in the world, suggests the risk of viral spillover – where a virus infects a new host for the first time – may be higher close to melting glaciers.

The findings imply that as global temperatures rise owing to climate change, it becomes more likely that viruses and bacteria locked up in glaciers and permafrost could reawaken and infect local wildlife, particularly as their range also shifts closer to the poles.

For instance, in 2016 an outbreak of anthrax in northern Siberia that killed a child and infected at least seven other people was attributed to a heatwave that melted permafrost and exposed an infected reindeer carcass. Before this, the last outbreak in the region had been in 1941."
