Wright Old School Chocolate: Significance of the Label

Significance of the Label

Have you ever wondered what goes into the design of labels? The answer is quite a lot! The label is not only designed to be clean and easy to recognize but also to convey important information to you, the consumer.

The most important aspect of any label is recognizable branding, and the "W" of the logo is no exception. The "W" is my middle initial.

But what's underneath the logo, and why is the format so structured? Well, there are three essential pieces of information that differentiate the different chocolate bar offerings.

Firstly, the country and farm where the cacao is grown is defined on the first line. This information is important because it tells you where the chocolate's origin is, and this is something of great significance to you as a consumer of fine chocolate. We believe that growers who have pride in their cacao trees and their beans are the kind of beans you want to taste. Beans from unknown origins are most likely less flavorful and less fairly grown (meaning growers receive about 1⁄5 of the pay of the better beans and likely are using child labor).

With better beans come better, more unique, and complex flavors. The second line on our label tries to guide you on what to expect in terms of the flavor notes within the chocolate. With only two ingredients, cocoa nibs and unrefined sugar, the flavors come directly from the cacao nibs, which are roughly half cocoa butter and half cocoa solids (the brown part, the flavor-rich part). Tastes can vary widely between individuals, so we are always interested in what you taste in the chocolate to ensure that the stated flavor notes are hitting a true consensus of what you are tasting.

Lastly, the % chocolate is stated on the front of the label. Since there are only two ingredients, the % chocolate is the difference between the whole bar and the amount of sugar. This means that the two ingredients always sum to 100%, and therefore 70% is 30% sugar, and 85% is 15% sugar. The structure of the label is meant to be methodical and orderly, as expected from a person with a chemistry background.

Thanks to everyone who participated in last week's special session, Drop the Dirty Banks! We learned how banks are financing and enabling the climate crisis, and discussed how to identify which banks are "dirty" and which are not, and what we can do as individual consumers and as organized groups of citizens. LGBTQ+ Book Club!

We are meeting April 6th at 8 PM after our monthly meeting!

Following our meeting join us out for dinner at a local restaurant to discuss LEAVES OF GRASS by Walt Whitman. We will decide the location together at the end of our meeting.

Join us in reading the 1855 edition of LEAVES OF GRASS by Walt Whitman, with introduction by Harold Bloom! We are easing into the book club with this 160 page book of poetry.

Blurb about the book from Robin our Event Coordinator: This is the most inclusive option with regard to romance and sexuality (it is not so much about love or sex between two individuals as love for oneself, which everyone can appreciate or grow to appreciate, even aromantic and asexual people). It might be ironic that a diversity group like ours is starting with a work by a dead white man, but I think that the otherwise-inclusive nature of the work, along with its beauty and its joyfulness, compensate for the race and gender of the author.

Both FHS girls and boys lacrosse teams top Attleboro on Tuesday

Via HockomockSports .com and Twitter, we share the results of the spring sports competition for Franklin High School on Tuesday, April 4, 2023. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.

Boys Lacrosse = Franklin, 23 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final

– Franklin’s star offensive trio of Tyler Sacchetti, Jayden Consigli, and Luke Davis combined for 24 points to lead the Panthers to a big win in the season-opener. Consigli had a team-high nine points with seven goals and two assists, Davis added three goals and five assists, and Sacchetti finished with five goals and two helpers.

Girls Lacrosse = Attleboro, 1 @ Franklin, 16 – Final

– Franklin started league play with a big win, defending its home turf with a 16-1 win over Attleboro. Gabi Consigli scored her first two varsity goals for the Panthers while Jamie Tanner had a strong all-around performance with two goals, three assists, two draws, and three ground balls. Ella Mahoney made four saves in net in the win.

FHS Panthers

Pantherbook: "Then to Now – A Day in the Life of an FHS Student, 1992 vs. 2023"

"31 years ago today, students at Franklin High would be starting off their school day at 6:55 a.m. Classes spanned from 45-50 minutes where the standardized classes like math, english, science and social studies (history) took place.

Although the four core subjects are still taught today, electives were quite different back then. Students could take classes like Home Economics where they learned to cook, typing lessons with typewriters, sewing classes, woodworking classes, graphic arts where they could make t-shirts, and automotive classes. Electives were very hands-on and students were able to learn skills that could be applied in everyday life. Many of the things the class of 1992 learned in electives would no longer be taught today, such as typing, which is now a basic skill that all students know.

Dismissal was at 1:55 p.m. and after school, students could participate in clubs, sports, or even school council. The business club, DECA, was popular and still is, even 31 years later. "
