Franklin Harvest Festival: Spread the Word! - Sunday, October 14
Franklin Historical Museum: King Philip's Indian War Presentation (inside) and Scarecrow Contest (outside) - Sunday, Oct 14
NY Times bestselling author Michael Tougias will give a slide presentation on the war between the Colonists and Native Americans in 1675-76 at The Franklin Historical Museum at 1:15 Sunday, October 14, as part of the Museum’s Second Sunday Speaker Series.
Tougias is the author of the acclaimed Until I Have No Country (A novel of King Philip's War), and co-author with Eric Schultz of King Philip's War: The History and Legacy of America's Forgotten Conflict.
The first part of the presentation will discuss the Indian way of life, Colonial settlements, and the events leading up to the war. The second part covers the battles and the strategy during this cataclysmic war, which on a per capita basis was the bloodiest conflict in our nation's history.
Slides include battle sites, period sketches, historic markers, maps, and suggestions for visiting road-side history. Tougias also discusses Native strategy during the war and the challenges of writing a historic novel. Former Commissioner of Indian Affairs for Massachusetts and member of the Wampanoag Tribe, Edith Andrews, is quoted on the novel's back cover, commenting that Until I Have No Country "captures the essence of the Native American." The novel includes adventure, romance, and intrigue while staying true to historical facts. A book signing will follow the presentation.
Tougias is the author and co-author of 21 non-fiction books including the national bestsellers Rescue of the Bounty, A Storm Too Soon, Overboard! The Finest Hours: The True Story of the Coast Guard’s Most Daring Rescue (to be a Disney movie), Derek’s Gift, The Cringe Chronicle and his award-winning book, There’s A Porcupine In My Outhouse! (Misadventures of a Mountain Man Wannabe).

– After a scoreless first half, Ally Stanton broke the deadlock midway through the second half off an Avery Snead assist. Erin Quaile equalized for Franklin just four minutes later off a Carly Alston assist. Breanna Atwood made nine saves and Taylor Butler made five saves for the Warriors, as both teams earned a point.
Golf = Franklin @ Oliver Ames – Postponed to a date and time to be announced.

"Heading into Friday night’s contest against Taunton, Franklin head coach Eian Bain wanted to get as many of his skill players involved as possible to keep the Tigers’ defense guessing.
Senior quarterback Nick Gordon delivered with a near flawless performance, going 11-for-14 for 243 yards, connecting with six different receivers, and tossing four touchdowns to lead the Panthers to a dominant 42-7 win over Taunton.
Franklin was essentially perfect in the first half with Gordon completing all of his passes (7-for-7) and the team recording 254 yards of offense, scoring on all four of its drives for a 28-0 lead at the break.
“We got off to a very fast start and I thought we executed the game plan really well,” Bain said. “We try to think about players not plays so we wanted to get certain kids to touch the ball. We had a lot of different kids touch the ball tonight and that wasn’t by accident."

THE BLACK BOX presents "Yacht Rock Night in Port Franklin" - Oct 26
THE BLACK BOX will present “Yacht Rock Night in Port Franklin” on Friday, October 26 at 8 PM. The night will be a West Coast celebration of light rock from the late 70s and early 80s.
Musical tributes to the likes of Michael McDonald, Toto, Starbuck, Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins and more with three local powerhouse supergroups - Captain and The Stubings, Nantucket Sound Machine and Sal Mon Pink and The Champagnes.
Being close to Halloween, costumes are encouraged (just give "Yacht Rock" a quick google search for ideas). There will be prizes for best costumes and more fun and surprises.
Tickets for “Yacht Rock Night in Port Franklin” are available at www.theblackboxonline.com or by calling the box office at 508-528-3370. Doors open at 7:30 pm.

Tri-County Offering the Town of Franklin Grade 8 Students Two Admissions Events
This year Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School will host two events for the town of Franklin Grade 8 students to attend. A Franklin Career Day will be offered on Friday, October 26 at 8:00 AM and Grade 8 Open House will be held on Thursday, November 1 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.
Franklin Career Day is a fun and interactive event held in the morning for students and parents/guardians to experience a tour of the 16 career programs and academic offerings at the school presented by Tri-County faculty and students. Extracurricular activities and athletics will also be featured.
Franklin students and their parents are encouraged to attend to learn more about our unique hands-on approach to real-world application of skills in a career-focused technical education. Tri-County will distribute a Letter of Attendance to all Franklin Grade 8 students who attend. A parent/guardian must be present to attend and must RSVP for this event by going to http://rebrand.ly/tricountyregister.
During the Grade 8 Open House, students and faculty will highlight 16 different career areas, as well as the school's rigorous, comprehensive academic program. Extracurricular activities, athletics, and the school's Online Admissions program will also be discussed. Refreshments will be served and raffles will be available for an opportunity to win prizes.
Tri-County Student Ambassadors will be stationed throughout the school's cafeteria to tell visitors more about their Career Programs and academic courses. Faculty members will also be standing by to escort visitors to any points of interest. The school's vocational instructors will be inside of their shops to answer questions. Superintendent-Director Stephen Dockray and school administrators will host a question and answer session on the benefits of a vocational/technical education to be held in the Auditorium.

Planning Board: Public Hearing - Oct 15 for plot line clean up
"If Town Council supports the proposed zoning map amendment, DPCD recommends they refer Zoning By-law Amendment 18-820 to the Planning Board for a Public Hearing."The Economic Development Committee recommended that this measure come before the Town Council. The Town Council agenda for the Sep 5 meeting incorrectly listed the item as a first reading prior to approval. The supporting documents clearly stated it was meant to go to the Planning Board for their review and approval before coming to the Town Council to approve the zoning bylaw changes.
The zoning changes are something that Franklin has been working on. Some of the plot lines don't align with the zoning categories. The Planning Dept review the plot lines and zoning and makes a recommendation for approval. The Economic Development Committee reviewed the proposal, recommended some changes where a new subdivision would have gotten split into two different zones (it was changed to move to only a single zone) The proposal is now what is being discussed.
My own property happens to be involved in this measure. Our plot is split almost evenly between two different but closely related residential zones. To clean up the map, the proposal puts all of the plot in a single zone. Our plot was split between Rural Residential I and Single Family Residential III. The proposal moves our plot totally within the Single Family Residential III zone.

Kids Corner Cooking Classes Begin November 7
Lifelong Community Learning, a program of the Franklin Public Schools Lifelong Learning Institute, is pleased to announce that the next round of kids’ cooking classes will begin November 7 at Kids Corner. The classes cost $150 and run on Wednesdays for 6 weeks. Kids’ Corner aprons are also available to purchase for just $11.99.
The offerings will include:
- Kids’ Cooking Class–Grades 1–3 … In these 1 hour drop off classes, students are beginning to develop their skills.
- Kids’ Cooking Class – Grades 4 and 5 … In these 1 hour classes, students will gain additional kitchen skills learning more complex techniques like searing, folding, and more.
- Kids’ Cooking Class – Grades 6 – 8 … In these 1 hour classes, students will learn culinary terminology, more intricate knife skills, and work with more sophisticated menus.

– King Philip built a 2-0 lead by halftime but had to hold off a rally from Franklin to earn the win on a rainy afternoon. Alli Meehan scored twice in the first half, the first set up by Meghan MacDonald in the sixth minute and the second assisted by Abby Nixon with 16:59 left in the half. Franklin’s Ashley Reutlinger opened the scoring in the second half to get within one but MacDonald (assisted by Paige Berdos) answered for KP. Victoria Quinn scored Franklin’s second goal with an assist from Amanda Lewandowski. Mackenize Manning made 11 saves in net for KP while Anna Jardine made eight stops for Franklin. Kate O’Rourke had an outstanding performance defensively for the Panthers.

"First-year Franklin head coach Kelsey Weymouth didn’t talk about her team’s chance to clinch a league title before its big showdown with King Philip, so she wasn’t quite sure if they knew.
But based on how the Panthers played, especially early, it didn’t take long to figure out how prepared they were.
“That was the best volleyball I’ve seen them play,” Weymouth said. “I wanted them to just play volleyball today, so I didn’t say anything. The first time we played KP was a competitive match, so we knew it would be even more competitive this time around. We focused our practice yesterday to gameplan for [King Philip], we tailored it to their strengths we so we’d be prepared today.
“I just told them to play to have fun and play to win, and that’s exactly what they did.”

Tri-County Golf Team Wins 2018 Mayflower League Championship
Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School's Golf team has won the 2018 Mayflower League Championship!
The team took the win over Blue Hills 6.5-2.5 in a Match play format to clinch the league. Colby Jones, a junior from Millis, William Krawczynski, a sophomore from Medway, Bryce Dalzell, a sophomore from Wrentham, and Tucker DeVolder, a senior from Medway, all won their individual matches. Luke Holst, a sophomore from Wrentham and Mathew Brangiforte, a freshman from Wrentham recorded key half points for the team by winning their last hole of the match.
Brody Dalzell, a sophomore from Wrentham, our #1 golfer who has been a huge part of our team this year, broke his hand but was their supporting the team.
The team's record is now 9-1-1
The team took the win over Blue Hills 6.5-2.5 in a Match play format to clinch the league. Colby Jones, a junior from Millis, William Krawczynski, a sophomore from Medway, Bryce Dalzell, a sophomore from Wrentham, and Tucker DeVolder, a senior from Medway, all won their individual matches. Luke Holst, a sophomore from Wrentham and Mathew Brangiforte, a freshman from Wrentham recorded key half points for the team by winning their last hole of the match.
Brody Dalzell, a sophomore from Wrentham, our #1 golfer who has been a huge part of our team this year, broke his hand but was their supporting the team.

"Tens of millions of Social Security recipients and other retirees will get a 2.8 percent boost in benefits next year as inflation edges higher. It’s the biggest increase most retired baby boomers have gotten.
Following a stretch of low inflation, the cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, for 2019 is the highest in seven years. It amounts to $39 a month raise for the average retired worker, according to estimates released Thursday by the Social Security Administration.
The COLA affects household budgets for about one in five Americans, including Social Security beneficiaries, disabled veterans and federal retirees. That’s about 70 million people, enough to send ripples through the economy.
Unlike most private pensions, Social Security has featured inflation protection since 1975. Beneficiaries also gain from compounding since COLAs become part of their underlying benefit, the base for future cost-of-living increases."

"The deadline for registering to vote in the Nov. 6 state election is 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17.
Any citizen who will turn 18 by election day is eligible. City and town clerks will stay open until 8 p.m. on Oct. 17.
Voters can also register online, in person at Registry of Motor Vehicles offices or by mail by downloading a form available on the secretary of state’s website and sending it to or dropping it off at a local city or town hall.
Absentee ballots are available for voters who will be out of town on election day or who have medical conditions or religious beliefs that will prevent them from going to the polls in person. Application are available on the secretary of state’s website and at city and town halls. The deadline to apply is noon Nov. 5, and the ballot must be postmarked by 8 p.m. on election day."

FHS performs "A Cabaret" - Oct 17-18

"When the lights go up and the curtain rises on the evenings of October 17 and 18, you will not want to miss the Franklin High School performance of, “A Cabaret,” under the direction of Marushka Waters.
A long time Franklin High school tradition, “A Cabaret” is loosely based on the 1996 Tony Award Winning Best Musical “Cabaret”-the story of a dynamic variety show in Berlin during World War II.
“A Cabaret” features an array of songs, dances, and scenes performed (and created) by students. Those interested in lighting and the technical side of theater have the opportunity to participate, running the lights or sound for the show; it may not seem it, but behind-the-scenes work are some of the most critical parts of the show. Pumpkins in the Park - Oct 28
The Franklin Police Department and Franklin Recreation Department are offering a free Halloween celebration on October 28, 5:00 - 8:00 PM at 911 Panther Way.
The Police Department will turn the station into the Hall of Justice with superheroes and villains. They will have a spooky trail, bounce house, obstacle course, face painting and games.
The Franklin Recreation Department will also be hosting a carved pumpkin contest. Please drop off finished, already carved pumpkins to the Sculpture Park on Panther Way between 5:00-7:00 PM.
We will provide tea light candles. Contest starts right at 7:00 PM.
Light refreshments will be provided.
Ages: Pre-school- 5th grade.

Boys Soccer = Franklin, 1 @ Sharon, 0 – Final
– Franklin senior Tim Duval scored just over two minutes into the game and the Panthers held on to that score for the rest of the way to earn two points.
Girls Soccer = Sharon, 0 @ Franklin, 3 – Final
– Anna Balkus scored a brace to lift the Panthers to the victory and keep Franklin within just two points of league-leading Mansfield. Freshman Riley Fitzpatrick marked her varsity debut with her first career goal. Calen Frongillo, Sydney St. Marie and Hailey Toolin each recorded assists for the Panthers. Breanna Atwood made three saves for the clean sheet and Lydia Chase made 19 saves for the Eagles.
Golf = Franklin, 158 @ North Attleboro, 147 – Final
– The Rocketeers earned their 10th win of the season on the middle course as Heather Hill. Jillian Barend shot a 2-under par 33, Marcus Costa shot 36, Matt Wanless carded a 38, and Pat Roberts finished with a 40. Matt D’Errico and Jack Paterson paced Franklin with 38
