FHS girls soccer team posts win on Monday

Via Twitter, Franklin TV, and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the Fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Monday, September 30, 2024

Boys soccer = Milford, 2 @ Franklin, 0 – Final
– Behind one goal in each half, Milford went on the road and earned the biggest win of its season, a 2-0 upset over division rival Franklin. The Hawks took the lead in the first half when Gabe Santos linked up with Gio Cappelli to make it 1-0. In the second half, just before the midway point, Marcos Da Silva set up Cappelli for his second of the game for a key insurance goal. Goalie Robbie Cappelli and the Milford back line played well to quell a dangerous Franklin attack.

Girls Soccer = Franklin, 5 @ Milford, 2 – Final
 - Franklin took a 3-0 lead into halftime and pulled out another high-scoring win to maintain its position in a first-place tie atop the Kelley-Rex division. Lainey Costa opened the scoring with her first varsity goal, assisted by Morgan Lovell. Kelly O’Connor scored the next four goals for the Panthers with four different players picking up the assists – Lily Strong, Cassidy Carmignani, Gwen Holland, and Costa. Milford got goals from Kyla Nashawaty and Katelyn Kearnan in the second half.
"GREAT DUB against Milford 5-2🔥 G2 goes to Lainey"

Golf = Franklin, 150 @ Grafton, 142 – Final
 - Franklin had a strong performance on the road but Grafton set a new team record with four golfers shooting par or better in a win at Highfields Country Club. Sophomore Tyler Perlman had one of his best rounds of the season, shooting an even-par round to score a team-low score of 35 for the Panthers. Sophomore Ben Burgess added a 36, senior Caden Sullivan chipped in with a 39, and seniors Jack Nelson and Liam Lewandowski both came in at 40 for the day.
"Panthers lose.

Tyler Perlman: 35 (-1)
Ben Burgess: 36 (E)
Caden Sullivan: 39 (+3)
Liam/Nelly: 40 (+4)"

New well 7/7A treatment Facility Addition Construction to get underway soon

New well 7/7A treatment Facility Addition
New well 7/7A treatment Facility Addition
"Construction of the Well 7/7A PFAS Treatment Facility Addition will be getting underway soon.  The project is being financed with a 0% loan from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) and is expected to be completed by January 2026.

The project includes the construction of an on-site treatment facility that will house granular activated carbon (GAC) pressure vessels and associated ancillary equipment as an addition onto the Well 7/7A pump station.
In December 2020, the detected PFAS concentrations exceeding the MCL occurred, therefore use of the well was discontinued at that time.  This project will benefit the Town by reducing the PFAS at Well No. 7/7A to below the regulated limits for continued use of this important water source in the Franklin system.

The DWSRF program is administered by MassDEP with joint funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. DWSRF programs operate around the country to provide States and communities with the resources necessary to maintain and improve the infrastructure that protect our valuable water resources nationwide."

Greater Boston Food Bank expands refrigeration capacity to meet increasing needs

"A team member at the Greater Boston Food Bank loaded boxes of orange juice and eggs onto a pallet, steering it by shelves as he selected items. Local food pantries compile an order, much like making a grocery shopping list for your family’s needs.

“Our agency partners go online to our shopping system they can see all of this product in house available online, and they start to build their orders based on the needs of their clients,” said Jonathan Tetrault, vice president of Community Impact and Operations for the Greater Boston Food Bank.

At more than two stories high, it would seem the food bank’s refrigerated section has plenty of space, but there is such a demand the food in cold storage turns over more than twice a week. Produce and eggs are some of the most expensive and highly sought-after items at local food pantries. The executive director of the town of Franklin’s food pantry told us last year they ordered almost 90,000 eggs.

“When the Greater Boston Food Bank doesn’t have that in stock, because our clients rely on those staples and because they are such a healthy multicultural food type, we have to go purchase those staples,” said Tina Powderly."

Reminder: FREE Community Concert features organist Cathy Cargill Koch - Oct 5

FREE Community Concert @FranklinUMC featuring Catherine (Cathy) Cargill Koch on Saturday, October 5, at 7 PM.

Franklin United Methodist Church (UMC) is located at 82 W. Central Street, Franklin (MA). Parking is available in the parking lot between the church and the Franklin Historical Museum.

Free street parking is available on East St., West St., and Church Ave.

Catherine (Cathy) Cargill Koch’s musical began playing the organ at the age of 12, when she would walk to the Franklin Methodist Church daily after school to practice the organ. She became the church’s organist following the resignation of the previous organist in 1967. She held this position until her graduation from Franklin High School in 1971, after which she pursued a degree in music education and organ performance at Bucknell University. Catherine furthered her studies at Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts, earning a master’s degree in the same fields.

FREE Community Concert features organist Cathy Cargill Koch - Oct 5
organist Cathy Cargill Koch - Oct 5

For the past 38 years, Catherine has been the organist at the Manlius United Methodist Church in Manlius, New York. She has also served as a substitute organist for various churches in Central New York, including her home church in Franklin.

Beyond her role as an organist, Catherine enjoyed a 44-year career as a music teacher in both public and private schools until her retirement in 2020. She taught music theory, studio music, and directed choirs, including barbershop, men’s, and mixed choruses. She also led guitar clubs and musicals, and was a guest choral conductor and accompanist for All-County and All-City performances. Catherine has presented workshops, given performances at All-State conventions, professional development days and college music education classes. Additionally, she maintained a private studio for voice, piano, and guitar lessons.

In retirement, Catherine continues to share her love of music by teaching her grandchildren piano and guitar, accompanying their school chorus concerts, and playing piano for church services at several senior retirement homes. She also supports local school districts by accompanying choral and orchestra concerts.

Catherine finds her greatest joy in selecting, preparing, and playing music for church worship, praising God through the majestic compositions of the great masters. She considers it an honor and privilege to contribute to worship services, giving glory to God through her music.
