Fallen Hero Recognition: Lawrence J. Clark - November 7, 2024 - 9 AM

Memorial event today (11/07/24) at 9 AM on the Town Common Veterans Walkway to honor Lawrence J. Clark. 

This program will include the placing of a Memorial Wreath for the day, the playing of Taps, a salute from those present, and a reading of whatever history  may be available for that veteran.  This is a way of keeping the memory of that veteran alive.

Lawrence Clark was born in1888, the son of John and Mary Jane Clark, along with 4 brothers and 2 sisters.

For eight years he was a Massachusetts resident, working for the American Felt Company before entering the service.

He was said to be one of Franklin's most ardent sportsmen. He was noted for his golfing ability having won the Franklin Country Club Round Robin twice, before answering the call to colors.

He entered the Army on October 45, 1917 joining Company 1, 302 Infantry Regiment, 76th Division,.  He transferred on Feb 4, 1918 to Company L, 61st Infantry Regiment 5th Division and departed for Europe on April 16th 1918.

Second Sunday Speaker Series: The Story of the Boston Floating Hospital - Nov 10

Franklin’s own John Kulig, MD MPH, Professor of Pediatrics Emeritus at Tufts University School of Medicine, will share the remarkable story of the “Boston Floating Hospital,” which literally took its first trip around the harbor back in 1894, providing fresh air and medical care to poor, sick children. That beginning eventually led to an on shore hospital and remarkable research, including the development of life-saving ‘formula’ for children unable to get mother’s milk. 

Through research, ingenuity, and attention to the needs of ailing children and their families, the hospital grew into a scientific leader, pioneering pediatric medicine.

Kulig not only practiced at “Floating” he also was involved in the effort to write the history of the institution, which benefited not only Boston but many, many Franklin area children, over the years.

Both FHS field hockey & volleyball (video) teams win on Wednesday to advance to final 8

** Volleyball

Division 1 = #25 Belmont, 0 @ #9 Franklin, 3 – Final

– Belmont came in riding the momentum of its big upset of Bishop Feehan but the Panthers quickly took the lead in the first set and never looked back for the 3-0 sweep (25-13, 25-12, 25-22). It was a balanced approach at the net for Franklin highlighted by eight kills from Olivia Alberti (seven digs, four blocks), seven kills from Emerson Delleo, and six kills from Makayla Kuykendall (13 digs, four aces). Faith Edgehille (22 digs) helped set the tone defensively while Brooke Daniels (20 assists) spread it around offensively. Franklin will travel to top-seeded Newton North (21-1) on Friday at 6:00.

Division 1 = #10 Wachusett, 1 @ #7 Franklin, 6 – Final

– Franklin built its lead over the course of the game with the first five goals of the contest to secure an impressive 6-1 verdict against Wachusett. Raena Crandall set up Addi Weiss for the lone goal of the first quarter and then tacked on a late goal in the second to help the Panthers stake a 2-0 lead at the break. Haley Wernig netted her 100th career goal to help Franklin extend its lead less than five minutes into the second half and Jossie Camp set up Crandall for Franklin’s fourth with a minute left in the third. Weiss got her second early in the final frame, and after Wachusett finally broke through at the midway point of the fourth, the Panthers responded within two minutes when Penelope Brady scored on an assist from Caydence Canavan. Devon Barry had a terrific game in net for Franklin with 13 saves to earn the win. “This was an amazing team effort and win for Franklin,” said FHS head coach Michelle Hess. #7 Franklin will travel to #2 Walpole on Saturday at 2:30 in a D1 state quarterfinal matchup.

The Franklin (MA) Finance Committee met as scheduled on Wednesday, Nov 6 with 7 members participating in Council Chambers and 2 members absent (Batchelor, Hamilton)

Quick recap:

• committee voted to keep same org structure as prior given status and new members, etc. Conley, Chair, Riley, Vice-Chair, Corbesierio, Clerk (passed 7-0-2; 2 absent)
• committee approved the minutes for the 3 budget hearings in May (passed 7-0-2; 2 absent)
• Town Administrator Jamie Hellen walked through the recommendation on FY25 Budget Adjustments and the committee voted to recommend them as discussed to the Town Council  (passed 7-0-2; 2 absent)
• Jamie took time to outline the new Town and School Finance and Human Resources organization restructure, a work in progress for a number of years and finally operational, answered a number of clarification questions 
• Jamie also presented the FY24 Preliminary Expense Recap & Local Receipts year-end report  and the Stabilization Account Report and answered a number of clarification questions
• Brief update on the FY26 Budget Model and Fiscal Forecast Update, discussion around dodging a massive increase in the Norfolk County Retirement Fund, procedurally the Retirement Board should have bene more forthcoming about the increase, they weren't, still an item to watch
• Related to the retirement funding, it had been anticipated that once it was fully funded (approx. 2032, now 2035), those funds could be reallocated to the OPEB account and start paying that down more sooner. Confirmed delayed to 2035 currently
• As a result of the OPEB funding process, why doesn't the Town consider helping the Schools with the "hold harmless" funding. Can't be done all at once, it is about 12-15 Million, but the town is chipping away at OPEB, we should consider chipping away at the "hold harmless" too
• member comments lead to discussion (and future discussion) around how the committee can help raise the awareness of the community on the fiscal issues. More to come on that front

The Massachusetts State Senate stands ready to fight for the fundamental values our Commonwealth holds dear once again. As we wait for our country to turn yet another page, we are reminded that Massachusetts is a Commonwealth—and we are all charged with the responsibility of caring for each other, regardless of background or political affiliation.
