Franklin Cultural District: #artshappenhere - Cultural Festival has a full schedule for the Main Stage

Summer is behind us, the rain has ended for now and it looks like a great weekend for the 2nd Franklin Community Unity Cultural Festival. Food trucks, beer & wine garden, artisan vendors, non-profit alley, and entertainment all afternoon on the Main Stage all in and around the Town Common.

2022 Hockomock League Volleyball Preview: Franklin

HockomockSports.com has published its outlook for the Volleyball teams for the fall 2022 season. We share the FHS outlook and link to the full Hockomock League outlook below.

FRANKLIN

2021 Record: 18-2 (Kelley-Rex co-champion)

2021 Finish: Reached Div. 1 Final Four

Although Franklin only graduated a small number of seniors from last year’s team that made the Division 1 state semifinals, the Panthers lost a lot of production.

Gone are Caitlyn Mackintosh, last year’s HockomockSports Player of the Year, Lindsey Tarantola, a league all star that led the league in blocks, and Brigid Earley, one of the top middles in the Hock. But this isn’t the first time the Panthers have lost a talented senior class, multiple all stars, or even an MVP – and they’ve always found a way to come back and compete as a top team in the league.

Three-year starter Taylor Lacerda returns to pace the offense, leading the Panthers in kills a year ago as a sophomore with 155. She’s the lone six rotation returner in the group so head coach Samantha Redmond – who picked up a boost on the bench with the addition of former head coach Kelsey Weymouth as an assistant – will be looking for new faces to step into key roles at the net.

There will be some changes along the backline as senior Meghan Linkkila will move from the libero position to take over as the setter, and classmate and fellow captain Georgia Harvey, who was a defensive specialist last year, will take on the libero role.

“Franklin volleyball is really excited to continue our hard work this year,” Redmond said. “We lost a strong four seniors last year but we are confident that this new class of players will bring a lot of diversity to our offense and defense. We look forward to proving ourselves in the Hockomock once again!”

Hockomock Field Hockey: Players to Watch in 2022 - FHS' Carney, Downing

HockomockSports.com has published its listing of Field Hockey Players to Watch for the fall 2022 season. We share the FHS athlete and link to the full listing below.

KAITLYN CARNEY, SENIOR – FRANKLIN

Franklin is coming off a dominant, historic season and Carney was the driving force behind the Panthers winning a third straight league title and reaching their first state semifinal. The reigning HockomockSports.com Player of the Year led the league in scoring for the second straight season, and the 55 goals she accounted for (37 goals and 18 assists) was more than all but two other teams. Carney is known for her intensity in the midfield, tracking back to win possession and then turning it instantly into attack. Her physicality is tough for teams to match and she has a powerful shot that makes her a threat anywhere in the circle. With strong stick skills to get past defenders and the vision to get the ball to her teammates around the cage, Carney draws the attention of all opposing defenders and opens up space for the rest of the team to attack. Franklin will be eyeing another Kelley-Rex title and another deep tournament run and Carney will again be the engine in the Panthers midfield to push the team forward.

SHAW DOWNING, SENIOR – FRANKLIN

Last season, Franklin scored 124 goals, which was more than double the next highest total (Attleboro’s 61). Downing was one of the players that stepped up and propelled the Panthers on a historic run to their first state semifinal. A clever finisher around the cage and an aggressive attacker who will pounce on any loose ball, Downing scored 20 goals and added nine assists last season, finishing sixth in the league in scoring. With a strong shot that makes her a threat anywhere in the circle, Downing seems to have an innate sense of where the ball is going to rebound and the quickness to jump on the chance when it comes her way. Franklin will be seeking a fourth straight league title this year and Downing’s goal scoring should have the Panthers confident that they can add another deep tournament run as well.
