Come join your Franklin friends and neighbors at the Franklin Newcomers and Friends Club April Meeting.

To accommodate one of our favorite speakers, we made a date change. Join us on Wednesday, April 5th at 7:00 PM to hear updates from our Town Administrator, Jamie Hellen. We're hoping to also have our School Superintendent, Lucas Giguere, but are awaiting confirmation from him. Don’t miss this opportunity; bring your questions!

Join us at Escape Into Fiction Book Store, 12 Main Street, Franklin at 7:00. Light refreshments will be served. Come early and browse/shop the store or grab a bite beforehand nearby. No need to be a newcomer to the area, come make connections in your community.

Dean College: Choreographers' Concert - March 31 & April 1

The Joan Palladino School of Dance Presents Choreographers' Concerts on Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1, 2023. 

Student Choreographers will have selected works showcased and adjudicated by renowned industry professionals in this two-night opportunity. You will have the chance to see the creative talents of emerging student choreographers in a full production setting. 

Friday evening’s presentation will feature live commentary from the guest artists following each work, while the program will be reprised as a regular concert on Saturday evening.

Space Needs Subcommittee decides to make recommendation for redistricting in 2024 (audio)

FM #966 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 966 in the series. 

This session of the radio show shares the School Committee - Space Needs Subcommittee meeting held hybrid, some in the 3rd floor conference room on Monday, Mar 27, 2023, other virtual via Zoom webinar. (P-present, R-remote)

Brief recap: (caution, albeit brief I believe I have the gist of the discussion  - the audio is available to listen to all the nuances and final options)

• Received an update from Supt Giguere on status with KBA

• Group listened, discussed each individual's preference for their recommendation, two were somewhat close, then as discussion ensued, and clarifications arose things seemed to change on who was where; fortunately as time permitted, they did clarify an option, then a second, and an ‘amendment’ to that one, ultimately it came to two options for vote as recommendation

First, buffer for Sep 2023, expanded to including incoming K students, redistricting per storymap in 2024

Second, same as first but allow DT families to choose where they would go beyond 2024

• Vote was 2-1 in favor of the first option 

• Consider the recommendation to be redistricting for 2024 with an option for those in the ‘buffer’ per the storymap, to opt to move early to where they would end up. For example, a DT student now at Keller but would per redistricting would go to Oak/Horace Mann, could choose to go early (2023) rather than wait until 2024

• details on recommendation to be finalized by subcommittee and released before April break

• The current schedule holds for the presentation on the recommendation at the April 25 meeting with a School Committee vote at their May 9 meeting.

Franklin Art Association welcomes multi-media artist Kim Morin Weineck for April 5 meeting

The Franklin Art Association (FAA) is excited to announce that multi-art media artist Kim Morin Weineck will be presenting at the upcoming 6:30 PM, April 5 monthly meeting at the Franklin Senior Center.  The public is invited to attend this exciting presentation.

Kim is an artist working in all fine art mediums. She belongs to local art associations and is a Signature Member of the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod (PPSCC).  Kim's work is widely collected, and she has won numerous awards, most notably for excellence in landscape at For Pastels Only for 2020 and 2018 and Best in Show for the PPSCC 2018 annual juried exhibit.

A graduate with distinctions from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Kim enjoys teaching classes and workshops around the country. Her work can be found at Gallery 9 in Norwood, MA, Zullo Gallery in Medfield, MA, the Design Center at the Franklin Mill Store in Franklin, MA as well as other changing venues. She lives in Norfolk, MA with her husband and two daughters and is often inspired by her local landscape.  For more examples of her work see www.kimweineck.com.

Join us on the first Sunday of each month at 7 PM. On April 2, we’ll continuing planning our Earth Day celebration. We are specifically focused on Climate Justice (mitigating the effects of Climate Change on the poorest people of the world and our community).

A study of prejudice against lesbians and gay men, "Pink Triangles" was one of the very first films to confront the growth of homophobia in American life and served to alert audiences to the danger of scapegoating and violence that can occur in any society. The Franklin Cultural Council's symposium, "Uplifting the Arts: the Intersection of Culture and Economy" is scheduled for Thursday, March 30, at Dean College in the Guidrey Center. 

The featured speaker is Michael Bobbitt, Executive Director, Mass Cultural Council. 

The panelists include Edward M. Augustus, Jr., Chancellor, Dean College; Carolyn Cole, Program Officer, Mass Cultural Council; and Erin Lynch, Executive Director, MetroWest Visitors Bureau. The moderator for the evening is Kaye Kelly, Professor, Berklee College of Music.

Reading Goals: Shining A Light On The Science Of Reading And Idea Law As A First Step To Valid Reading Goals

As a volunteer for over 10 years, Nancy Duggan is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Decoding Dyslexia Massachusetts. Most of this work is directly helping thousands of parents in Massachusetts and across the country with free information and advice concerning dyslexia and the IEP process, by reading and explaining student assessments, explaining IDEA laws, the IDEA essential components of reading, and the standards of federally defined scientifically based reading research to parents and educators. Work also aims at driving policy changes through legislative and grassroots engagement.
