Resilient Rhythms: A Teen’s Story of Strength Through Dance

“Dance can transform every emotion into strength, healing, and connection by bringing communities together in ways words cannot.” — Tanavi Balaji

Franklin High School junior Tanavi Balaji recently marked a remarkable milestone with her Arangetram, the traditional solo debut in Bharatanatyam, one of India’s oldest and most revered classical dance forms. Known for its intricate movements, expressive storytelling, and rhythmic precision, Bharatanatyam demands years of dedication and discipline.

The Arangetram, which means “ascending the stage,” represents a dancer’s formal graduation after years of rigorous training. Tanavi began her journey at age five and delivered a performance that was both powerful and graceful, leaving the audience mesmerized by her artistry and emotional depth.

Her extraordinary dedication drew recognition from Massachusetts State Representative Jeffrey N. Roy, who presented her with an accolade, and Massachusetts State Senator Rebecca L. Rausch, who honored her for her artistic achievements and contributions to cultural enrichment. Both leaders praised her for using art to inspire others and foster the well-being of the community. The celebration was further graced by Professor Kaye Kelly, Senior Faculty at Berklee College of Music, who spoke of dance as a transformative force that softens hearts and unites people through its universal language.

Beyond her technical skill and stage presence, Tanavi dedicated her Arangetram to promoting emotional & mental resilience, highlighting dance as a universal language of healing and expression. “Dance allows us to feel, express, and come together,” she said. “It transforms every emotion, whether joy, sadness, hope, or love, into strength that uplifts and inspires communities.”

“In today’s ever-changing world, it is important to pause and celebrate what brings us together through art, culture, and compassion,” Tanavi added. Her Arangetram was both a personal triumph and a testament to resilience, inclusivity, and the power of art to unite communities.

Moments like these remind us that creativity and culture can inspire, heal, and leave a lasting impact on all who experience them.

Finance Committee has gets a fiscal discussion but runs out of time to get into the Technology deep dive (video)

The Finance Committee (FinCom) met on Wednesday beginning at 5:30 PM. 8 of the 9 members of the Finance Committee were present, 3 new members were sworn in officially.

Franklin TV broadcast is available for replay -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMhCNMRndj0

Quick recap:
  • The agenda could not be completed in the time allotted before the Town Council meeting at 7:00 PM. The planned 'deep dive' on Technology was the major item as it will be rescheduled to their Nov 5 meeting.
  • During Citizen Comments, M Minnechelli spoke on the economics of development proposals, i.e. 444 E Central, and the need for some body, perhaps FinCom to weigh in to help clarify the numbers that are being mentioned which are conflicting and perhaps erroneous.
    • Town Administrator advised not weighing in on the specifics of 444 East Central as the public hearing is underway. However an understanding of the overall economics of development would be a good topic for a future meeting
  • Much of the discussion revolved around the fiscal issues currently being faced not just by Franklin but by most communities in the State. The "perfect storm" report by the MMA was referenced. The work underway at the State level to take a new look at local contributions for Chap 70 could affect our "hold harmless" situation. The Federal cuts will affect Mass revenues, and some of that will also affect our State funding.

The Town Administrator memo of Aug 7 was refreshed as many appear to have not read it, or understood the implications -> https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UnddsW97syeHkkVjNOgRlOkKgHgOGiS0/view?usp=drive_link

Voices of Franklin: Stephen Karunakaran encourages active engagement in the upcoming election

Dear Franklin Neighbors,

With the biennial election just weeks away, our Franklin community faces the important responsibility of selecting leaders for our Town Council and School Committee. These individuals will guide the direction of our town and schools, shaping our collective future. We are fortunate to have a range of candidates offering diverse perspectives for these critical roles.

As a committed member of the Franklin community and a candidate for the 2025 School Committee, I am writing to the "Voice of Franklin" to encourage our residents to actively engage in the upcoming election. The choices we make at the polls will shape the future of our schools and the opportunities we create for our children.

I urge voters to thoroughly assess each candidate’s vision, qualifications, and dedication to our community’s values. Look for those who will champion sufficient staffing, promote forward-thinking education policies that embrace technological trends, and ensure our students are well-equipped for higher education and beyond. These priorities require committed leadership.

Your vote is your voice. By participating, you support candidates who reflect your hopes for Franklin’s future. Let’s unite to make informed decisions that strengthen our schools and community.

Thank you for considering my message. I am confident that together, we can elect a Council that will guide Franklin toward a brighter, more prosperous future. Beyond casting my own vote, I aspire to serve our town with dedication and thoughtfulness if elected to the School Committee.

If you’d like to discuss further, please feel free to reach out at stephenforschool2025@gmail.com. I’ll also be available for in-person conversations at the final Farmers Market of the season this Friday.
