Both FHS girls and boys lacrosse and tennis teams post wins on Monday

Via HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the FHS spring sports action on Monday:

Softball = Taunton, 5 @ Franklin, 4 – Final (8 Inn.)
– Taunton rallied with a run in the top of the seventh on a solo homer by Angie Lynch to force extra innings and then, after scoring three runs in the eighth, held off a Panthers rally in the bottom half to pull out the extra-innings win. Taunton and Franklin each scored a run in the first, but the Panthers grabbed the lead in the sixth before Lynch tied the game in the seventh.

Franklin’s first run came off an RBI single from junior Avery Chalk. Chalk then put Franklin ahead, 2-1, after a fielder’s choice saw Katy Liberman score. Brooke Aldrich went 3-for-4 with two RBI and gave the visitors the lead with a home run in the first, and Kaysie DeMoura (triple) also drove in two for the Tigers. Reece Allen had two hits for the Panthers, while Hailey Fales was 3-for-4 and drive in a pair. Aislinn Lavery went the distance for Franklin, giving up nine hits and four earned runs.

Liv Mendonca went six innings for Taunton and allowed seven hits and two runs. Cate Larson picked up the win for the Tigers, pitching two innings of relief, striking out three, and allowing a pair of runs.

Boys Lacrosse = North Attleboro, 8 @ Franklin, 24 – Final
– Luke Davis scored seven times and Jayden Consigli had six goals, as Franklin scored more than 20 goals for the third straight game to start the season. It was a close game through the first quarter. Davis and Consigli each had hat tricks in the opening 12 minutes, but Matt Antonetti, Connor Ruppert, and Brady Backner each scored for North to go into the first break at 6-3.

Franklin broke the game open in the second with four goals in just 1:27. Tyler Sacchetti had the first two, just 16 seconds apart, Consigli fed Connor Sullivan for a rip, and then Davis whipped a lefty shot under the bar to make it 10-6. Consigli fired in a man-up goal and Chris Drake took a hit to find the back of the net and extend the lead to nine. Antonetti made a nice steal on a clearance and scored in the last minute of the half, but Franklin led 12-4.

Clayton Billingkoff started the third with a goal for North, but Franklin scored the next nine to put the game away. Davis added three more, and Sacchetti and Consigli each had a pair. Ryan Grasso and Ravin Chaudhury also scored and CJ Perro got his first of the night. Billingkoff got a second to make it 21-6 after three. Antonetti completed his hat trick in the third. Perro would add two more and finished with a hat trick as well. After a tough first quarter, Justin Alexander ended up winning 21-of-28 draws and Matt Corvi made seven saves for the Panthers. JT Gallagher had six saves for North.

Girls Lacrosse = Franklin, 20 @ North Attleboro, 1 – Final
– Franklin hit the 20-goal mark for the third straight game to open the season, this time rolling to a win over the Rocketeers on the road. The Panthers dominated on draw controls, winning 21-of-23 attempts, led by four from Katie Peterson, and three apiece from Peyton Crandall, Kate O’Rourke, and Kaitlyn Carney. Stella Regan paced the Franklin offense — which featured 10 goal scorers — with four goals and an assist. Brigid Earley made seven saves in net for the win.

Boys Tennis = Taunton, 0 @ Franklin, 5 – Final
– Franklin earned a clean sweep, taking all five matches in straight sets in a win over visiting Taunton. Seniors Vayshnav Malhotra (6-0, 6-1), Thomas Broyles (6-1, 6-1), and Drew Mahoney (6-0, 6-0) all had strong showings sweep singles action. Senior Tim O’Keefe and sophomore Jay Gorgas battled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at first doubles, and the Panthers’ second doubles team of senior Aidan Karlowicz and sophomore Ahan Shetty didn’t drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at second doubles.

Girls Tennis = Franklin, 4 @ Taunton, 1 – Final
– A pair of singles wins and a pair of doubles wins was enough to lead Franklin to a victory on the road. Freshman Izzy Trull earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at first singles for the Panthers while senior Sarah Schiavo continued her strong start to the season with a 6-4, 6-2 third singles win. Senior Amulya Jayam and junior Shriya Rasish bagged a 6-3, 6-1 win at first doubles, and sophomore Chloe Essam and junior Allison Bagley emerged from double seconds action with a 6-3, 6-1 win.

Baseball = Franklin, 5 @ Taunton, 7 – Final
– Ryan Lanigan is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com provides the game recap:
"In a back-and-forth seesaw battle between two of the top teams in the Hockomock League, the Taunton baseball team emerged with a quality win over visiting Franklin.

Franklin built a pair of leads but Taunton erased both of them, using a three-run fifth inning to take the lead for good in a 7-5 win.

The Panthers seized a 2-0 edge in the top of the second inning only for the Tigers to answer with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Franklin’s offense struck for two runs in the third to tie it and took the lead once again with a single run in the fourth, but Taunton rallied for a second time by plating three runs in the fifth."

Commonwealth Magazine: MA House budget to be released on Weds; agreement on priorities leads to worry

"THE MASSACHUSETTS HOUSE budget, which will be released from the Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday, will include major new investments in early childhood education targeted at expanding the workforce and helping providers that offer subsidized care to low-income families.
However, the changes, which are aimed at increasing the accessibility of childcare, do not address the problem that many middle-class families have affording the state’s expensive private pay childcare system.
“We have to start somewhere, and the subsidized programs serve our most vulnerable students and children,” said House Education Committee Chair Alice Peisch at a press conference at Ellis Early Learning in Boston. Peisch chaired a special commission that examined the economics of early childhood education and made myriad recommendations for improving the system, to the tune of $1.5 billion a year."

"KEY BEACON HILL lawmakers said on Monday they were supportive of Gov. Charlie Baker’s bid to tilt health care more toward behavioral and primary care, but they worried that the $1.4 billion spending mandate over three years would result in higher health care spending.

At a hearing of the Legislature’s Health Care Financing Committee, Baker and Marylou Sudders, his secretary of health and human services, pushed for passage of legislation that would require health care providers to boost spending by 30 percent over three years on primary care, behavioral health, substance abuse treatment, and geriatric care.

The bill requires providers to boost their spending in those areas while still remaining within the health care cost benchmark established by the Health Policy Commission. But several members of the committee said they were concerned about the potential for a rapid runup in health care spending. "

Consumer Alerts from the Federal Trade Commission

Scammers are always thinking up ways to put a new spin on their criminal tricks. This time, they're sending spam texts to you — from your own phone number. They've changed (spoofed) the caller ID to look like they're messaging you from your number, but the shock of getting a text from yourself is bound to get your attention — which is what they're after.

Fire Dept achieves ISO Class 1 rating

Fire Chief James McLaughlin and Joseph Pasco, Northeast Manager of ISO (Insurance Services Office, Inc.), presented the upgraded rating of an ISO Class 1 to the Town Council on April 6th, 2022.  The Franklin Fire Department will move to the ISO Class 1 rating effective July 1st, 2022.  The ISO Class 1 rating from the Public Protection Classification is the highest rating attainable.

Franklin will be the 9th Fire Department in Massachusetts, only the 15th Fire Department in New England, and 459th in the Nation to obtain this rating.  This is out of over 45,000 fire departments rated nationally.  The Public Protection Classification goes from 1 to 10.  Class 1 represents superior property fire protection and Class 10 indicates that the area’s fire-suppression program doesn’t meet minimum criteria.

This rating is based on strict criteria developed and assessed by the ISO Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS).  ISO provides data and analytics for the property/casualty insurance industry.  Most U.S. insurers use the Public Protection Classification information as part of their decision making on offering coverage and the fees charged for the coverage of personal or commercial property insurance.  It is estimated that the improvement of each rating on the scale of 1-10 helps save property owners 7-15% on insurance.

Please note that the insurance policy holder must contact their insurance company to inquire about any savings.  Not every insurance company may use this rating.

The formal notification can be found on the Town of Franklin page   https://www.franklinma.gov/sites/g/files/vyhlif6896/f/uploads/iso_town_of_franklin_letter.pdf

The ISO Class 1 rating from the Public Protection Classification is the highest rating attainable

Some of the factors graded include:
- Emergency Communications
- The Fire Department
- Water Supply
- Community Efforts to Reduce the Risk of Fire

It is important to note that the Town of Franklin Water Department is instrumental in this rating as 40% is based on the Town Water Supply.  Additionally, communications, including the support of our regional dispatch center, The Metacomet Emergency Communications Center, play an important role in this rating.

Pantherbook: interviews with DECA students reveal insights on the business program

Grace Tucceri writes on her interview with Aradhya Garg, elected to a state office for DECA:

"DECA at FHS has reached a new height this year. 87 exceptional students went to States, with 27 state finalists and an additional 24 of them placing in the Top 5, qualifying for the International Career Development Conference. Even more impressive, Aradhya Garg, a junior at FHS, got elected as a state officer for Action Team 64. I interviewed him about the experience and his future goals."

"The DECA States competition took place on March 11th this year, with almost 90 Massachusetts teens attending the Hynes Convention Center in Boston.
