50+ Job Seekers - MCOA session Tuesday morning - Cover Letters

50+ Job Seekers in MA Statewide Networking Groups

Cover Letters

Tuesday May 10 at 10 AM – 12 PM

People are divided on cover letters. Do they matter? What makes for a good one? How do I even start?

Join us as we discuss cover letters. We'll present the cases for & against them, give you three suggested styles, and show you several that worked.

Why you need to know about this: The competition for jobs is fierce. A good cover letter can differentiate you from the rest of the applicants and thus improve your chances of being chosen for an interview.

New to the program? Registration is Required: https://50plusjobseekers.org/outreach/registration/

We’re Not Making This Up! Sisters in Crime New England (virtual event)

This virtual event deals with the ever-popular subject of true crime. True Crime authors, Maureen Boyle, Jan Brogan, Sue Coletta, and Manju Soni, will discuss how they tell a great story while sticking to the facts.

The link to register is:   https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0vdOuqrzgjHtyrKZVUxdvsA1jL97h...

Maureen Boyle is an award-winning journalist and the author of two true-crime books. Shallow Graves: The Hunt for the New Bedford Highway Serial Killer was published in 2017 and The Ghost: The Murder of Police Chief Greg Adams and the Hunt for His Killer (Black Lyon) was published in June 2021. She was named New England journalist of the year three times and has been honored for her work covering crime, drug issues and human-interest stories. She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in criminal justice. She is now the journalism program director at Stonehill College in Easton, MA.

Jan Brogan is the author of The Combat Zone: Murder, Race, and Boston’s Struggle for Justice, a true account of the 1976 murder of a Harvard football player in Boston’s old red light district, and the two criminal trials which produced the opposite verdicts. The author of four murder mysteries, she sold the rights to the first in her Hallie Ahern series, A Confidential Source, to Stephen Soderbergh’s Transactional Pictures, which is currently developing it as a TV series for HBO Max. A former correspondent for the Boston Globe, she also worked as a staff writer at the Providence Journal and the Worcester Telegram.

Sue Coletta is an award-winning crime writer and an active member of Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime, and International Thriller Writers. Sue lives with her husband and two spoiled guinea pigs in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire and writes two psychological thriller series (Tirgearr Publishing) and true crime/narrative nonfiction (Rowman & Littlefield Group). And recently, she appeared on the Emmy award-winning true crime series Storm of Suspicion.

M. J. Soni is an eye surgeon turned author. She is the author of Defying Apartheid, her nonfiction book about her experience of growing up in South Africa. Her short fiction and nonfiction has appeared in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, Akashic Books, Apeiron Review and The Establishment. She’s the recipient of the Leon B. Burnstein/MWA-NY Scholarship, and 2020 runner up to the Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction Writers of Color Award. She was a 2019 Pitch Wars mentee, and a 2020 Pitch Wars mentor. Her domestic suspense novel about an Indian-American doctor solving a murder in a New England town is currently out on submission.

One Last Try – Registry of Deeds IT staff

Dear Registry users and citizens,

We recently posted on our website www.norfolkdeeds.org  a video of a recent April interview outlining why the Norfolk Registry of Deeds should keep its 2 person on-site direct report Registry IT Department.  Sometimes “a picture is worth a 1,000 words” given all that has been written about this matter.  State Law has provided funds to pay for all Registry IT positions in an IT Department that has been in existence for over 35 years at the Norfolk Registry of Deeds.  The on-site Registry IT staff must be kept.

On May 4, 2022 Commissioners Peter Collins and Joseph Shea in a 2 to 1 vote eliminated all Registry IT positions out of the Registry Budget.  This is reckless.  It is unprecedented not to have on-site Registry IT services.  The Registry, its staff and those that the Registry serves are being targeted by a full scale dismantling of the Registry of Deeds on-site direct report IT support.

You can help stop the reckless and poor decisions with too many possible bad outcomes by contacting the Norfolk County Advisory Board members. A list of the members is also posted on our website. Please let these representatives know to keep the direct report Registry IT staff when they vote on May 11, 2022.  Also, please contact members of the Finance Committee of the Advisory Board from Avon, Plainville, Randolph, Milton and Brookline who will be voting a recommendation to the whole Advisory Board.

Professional Registry staff, Registry users and citizens who have supported the need for on-site Registry IT professionals are NOT being listened to by County Commissioners Collins and Shea.  Why would these Norfolk County Commissioners oppose their paid consultant Mark Abrahams answering deposition questions and their attorney write as one of the reasons that is could cause “embarrassment”?  For who?  The two county commissioners – Collins and Shea – who voted as they did?  For all county decision makers who influenced the IT review, actions and reports with the goal to dismantle the direct report Registry IT Department?  This is what you Registry supporters are up against but we all must keep “fighting the fight.”

You will also find posted on our website a letter from Attorney James McKenzie that says it all. It is just a sample of the support the Registry of Deeds has received since the 2 to 1 Norfolk County Commissioner vote going back nearly a year to June 30, 2021 to not have a Registry CIO. Was this the plan all along to not have any Registry IT professionals in the Registry IT Budget? On behalf of myself, the Registry staff and all who depend on the Registry of Deeds including homeowners I want to thank you for your kind words and support that has been given throughout this whole unfortunate matter.

Sincerely yours,

William P. O’Donnell,

Register of Deeds

"the state of emergency essentially became a pilot project for this concept"

"PEACE OF MIND for assisted living residents and their families – that’s what a bill before the Massachusetts Legislature would deliver. What small changes could make such a big difference? A handful of non-invasive treatments that are simple yet highly consequential.

To understand the issue first requires understanding the model. Assisted living, which has been certified and regulated for 27 years in Massachusetts, is a special combination of residential and personalized support services designed to meet the needs—both scheduled and unscheduled—of those who require help with activities of daily living. Activities of daily living include tasks related to bathing, dressing, grooming, eating, and other similar personal care needs.

Different from a nursing home, assisted living is a distinctly non-medical setting. Every resident has a private living area and maintains their preferred level of independence. In addition, while every assisted living community has nurses on staff, the law prohibits them from providing any skilled care whatsoever to residents. In the cases where a resident needs care, he or she has the choice of having a family member administer it or arranging and paying separately for an outside provider."

Town Council hears from Congressman Auchincloss, can't decide on parking fines, is impatient with DT progress, among items at May 4 session

FM #790 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 790 in the series.

This session shares part of the Franklin, MA Town Council meeting held on Wednesday, May 4, 2022.

The meeting was conducted in a hybrid format: members of the Town Council and Town Administration personnel were in the Council Chambers, some members of the public participated in person, some via the Zoom conference bridge, all to adhere to the ‘social distancing’ requirements of this pandemic period.

Quick recap:

  • Recognition of Harriet DiMartino on her 100th birthday

  • Compliance check failures continued from prior meeting; both 7-Eleven & Liquor World acknowledged and accepted violations, agreed to one day suspension of license effective May 11

  • Public hearing for street acceptances held, both ultimately passed via legislation with 8-0 vote (1 absent)

  • Congressman Jake Auchincloss, 4th Congressional District, appeared to provide multiple updates and answer questions from the Council and meeting participants. First Federal elected official to appear before Council

  • Melanson & Heath presented an overview of the just completed FY 2021 audit results; the results are good, no issues found, nor was a management letter included also a good sign that the financial processes are in good order

  • Bylaw to adjust parking fines tabled for 2nd meeting in June, more discussion clearly required on this topic. As reported, there was no consensus among the EDC which brought it forward and there remains no consensus on how to proceed

  • Second bylaw parking zone map proposed changes to add a ban on overnight parking downtown. Almost got tied to the other bylaw item (they are separate but related) but did get moved to a second reading

  • Update on Davis Thayer provided by Town Administrator. The building is still in School Committee control, confirmation received from MSBA on their awareness of closing and that the closing should have no impact if the Town does decide in future to go for MSBA funding. Not sure why the Council remains “impatient” with this status as they could have started their planning process to determine a future use anytime after the building actually closed. The School District is not using the building for education, another use can start to be determined, it will take time to do so, and likely be still not finally decided by the time the School Committee turns the building over legally to the Town

The recording runs about 3 hours and 35 minutes (3:35)

The show notes contain links to the meeting agenda. Let’s listen to the Town Council meeting of May 4, 2022
