Franklin For All - Visioning Survey Launched

Survey closes Friday, April 1, 2022

On March 7th, 2022, the Town of Franklin held a public forum to formally introduce the Franklin for All project, answer questions and engage with the community.

To ensure every Franklin stakeholder has an opportunity to provide feedback, we have launched a visioning survey that will be open till April 1, 2022. The data collected in this survey will be used by our project consultants at the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) to create zoning recommendations that would serve our collective vision for our downtown. The survey is anonymous and all questions are optional.

Electronics Recycling Event - April 1, 2022

FPAC presents The Drowsy Chaperone starring Broadway’s Ben Cameron and Emily Koch

The Franklin Performing Arts Company (FPAC), Franklin’s own professional theater company, will present The Drowsy Chaperone starring Ben Cameron and Emily Koch March 12-20 at THE BLACK BOX.   

Ben Cameron (Broadway’s WICKED original cast, Footloose, Aida) stars as Man in Chair alongside Emily Koch (Broadway’s WICKED, Waitress) as the title character. Featuring choreography by Clay Rice-Thomson (Broadway’s Moulin Rouge, King Kong, Newsies, Matilda). The star-studded cast will also feature Nick Rehberger (Broadway’s Fiddler on the Roof, The Glass Menagerie) as Robert, Sam Seferian (Broadway’s Pretty Woman) as George, Ali Funkhouser as Janet, Nick Paone as Aldolpho, Paul Rescigno and Robbie Rescigno as The Gangsters, and Kaley Were as Kitty along with an ensemble of local talent including apprentices from the Franklin School for the Performing Arts. The production will be directed by Raye Lynn Mercer with musical direction by Hallie Wetzell.

Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score, The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up of the Jazz Age musical, featuring one show-stopping song and dance number after another. With the house lights down, a man in a chair appears on stage and puts on his favorite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. The recording comes to life and The Drowsy Chaperone begins as the man in the chair looks on. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan, and an intoxicated chaperone, and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight.

FPAC’s The Drowsy Chaperone runs March 12-20 at THE BLACK BOX in Franklin, MA. Masks will be required for all patrons, regardless of vaccination status. Masks must be worn at all times, except while actively eating or drinking.

Franklin Education Association (FEA) statement at School Committee meeting 3/08/22

Thank you for this opportunity to speak on behalf of the membership of the FEA to the important issue of the budget. You've just heard Dr. Ahern's presentation.

We also support an increase in the budget and wonder if it shouldn't be a bigger increase, but for different reasons.

We've heard about the Portrait of a Graduate and the strategies for district improvement - both important topics. Over the  last few pandemic years, we've seen money spent on needed upgrades in technology and facilities improvements. Both good things, things that were necessary. Things that were needed.

We're asking you now to look at how that budget money is spent. We don't need any more assessments, or new initiatives, to tell us kids have learning gaps or social trauma. We know this. This is what we do. We need bodies - people who are working with and in front of the kids, everyday, all day. We need councilors, ESPs, health care staff, teachers, guidance, team chairs, special educators, ELL educators, psychologists, etc. Let's increase that budget so we can support the students and families in Franklin the way they  deserve  -  directly,  thoughtfully, impactfully.

Recap: Franklin For All Forum gets some input amid questions on MPAC and expressions of fear

Quick recap:

• The Franklin For All Forum was a hybrid event hosted technically by MAPC in the Council Chambers. Some technical issues needed to be worked out so the meeting was slow starting
• There were approx. 40-50 in room, another 100+ via Zoom, some other number (unknown) likely watching via cable or live stream
• The Forum was meant to allow for (1) Q&A on the process and (2) input from Franklin residents to help develop a vision for downtown
• EDC Plus Steering Committee Chair Melanie Hamblen provided some homework assignments (walk around Franklin, sign up for newsletter, checkout Franklin For All page, let's all be open and treat comments with respect)
• Emma Battaglia, MAPC Project Manager, provided an overview of the project and objectives. She announced the release of the survey to enable input which will be open for at least a couple of weeks. A draft of initial zoning recommendations will come forward for review and discussion
• The EDC Plus committee will hear and review, possibly propose something to the Town Council. Assuming the proposal includes zoning changes, the zoning changes would go to the Planning Board for their review (including 2 public hearings) before coming back to the Council. The Council would also hold a public hearing and have two readings of the changes before a final vote. Bottomline - plenty of time to review and discuss whatever changes do come from this study

HockomockSports.com: Player of the Week -> Emma White, Franklin Gymnastics

Franklin senior Emma White has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Feb. 27 through March 5. White is the 23rd player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2021-22 school year and the 12th of the winter season.

White continued her stellar senior season by adding another all-around title to her resume. She took home first place at the state championship meet that was held this weekend at Algonquin High, helping the Panthers finish in second place as a team and qualify for the upcoming New England meet. This title was added to the South Sectional and the Hockomock Gymnastics Championships all-around titles that White already claimed this winter.

“Emma has been a great athlete to coach these past two years,” said Franklin coach Paula Lupieb. “It’s been fun watching her gel with the team and excel in her craft! She performs with grace and power, as a senior she will be greatly missed."

Before Brooklyn: The Unsung Heroes Who Helped Break Baseball's Color Barrier with Author Ted Reinstein - Mar 15 - 7 PM

In April of 1945, exactly two years before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in major league baseball, liberal Boston City Councilman Izzy Muchnick persuaded the Red Sox to try out three black players in return for a favorable vote to allow the team to play on Sundays. The Red Sox got the councilman’s much-needed vote, but the tryout was a sham; the three players would get no closer to the major leagues. It was a lost battle in a war that was ultimately won by Robinson in 1947. 

This book tells the story of the little-known heroes who fought segregation in baseball, from communist newspaper reporters to the Pullman car porters who saw to it that black newspapers espousing integration in professional sports reached the homes of blacks throughout the country. It also reminds us that the first black player in professional baseball was not Jackie Robinson but Moses Fleetwood Walker in 1884, and that for a time integrated teams were not that unusual. And then, as segregation throughout the country hardened, the exclusion of blacks in baseball quietly became the norm, and the battle for integration began anew.

About the Author: Ted Reinstein has been a reporter for “Chronicle,” WCVB-TV/Boston’s award-winning—and America’s longest-running, locally-produced—nightly news magazine since 1997. In addition, he has been a contributor for the station’s political roundtable show and sits on WCVB’s editorial board. He lives just west of Boston with his wife and two daughters. He is also the author of New England Notebook (Globe, 2013) and Wicked Pissed (Globe, 2016).

This is very important week for Franklin. 

The week starts with the Franklin For All Forum Monday night, the discussion on what changes if any should be made to downtown gets into full gear. MAPC has been conducting some focus group meetings with key stakeholders. The results of those discussions remain to be seen. Thursday, the Joint Budget Committee, formally charged now with fostering discussion among the Town Council, Finance Committee, and School Committee gets to see the first release of the FY 2023 Town of Franklin budget. The numbers are still preliminary at this point but the ballpark should be good enough for a discussion on how to address the multiple priorities the Town (and Schools) face.
