FHS field hockey, golf, and both boys & girls cross country teams post wins on Tuesday

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Tuesday, Oct 3, 2023.

Field Hockey = Foxboro, 0 @ Franklin, 2 – Final
Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:
"Franklin has flexed its offensive prowess in recent history, including through the first seven games this year with over seven goals a game.
But the Panthers have a pretty good defense too.

In a battle of division leaders, Franklin tossed its sixth shutout of the season behind a strong defensive effort with a 2-0 win over visiting Foxboro.

Sophomore goalie Devon Barry turned away 11 shots from the visiting Warriors. The back defensive united anchored by senior Lindsay Dennett, who had a pair of defensive saves, also featured strong play by senior Brooke Taylor, juniors Maddie O’Brien and Ella Griffin, and sophomore sweeper Ava Lucenta."

Rocco Lampasona (two birdies) and Liam Lewandowski each shot 41 for the Panthers while CJ Steel finished at 42 for the day. Tyson Laviano (41), Ishan Kohli (42), Zach Corsetti (44), and Matthew Reilly (44) rounded out North’s scoring.

Congressman Auchincloss: An Update for the past 2 weeks in review (10/03/23)

Congressman Auchincloss

LAST 2 WEEKS IN REVIEW

I'm your representative in Congress and I write to keep you informed.

On the Hill

Avoiding a Government Shutdown

Avoiding a Government Shutdown: On Saturday, I voted to prevent a government shutdown. This was the responsible thing to do, but it is the last time I will support a GOP compromise that does not provide clear, credible, and concrete terms for supporting Ukraine.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy played political games with American livelihoods and Ukrainian lives. He caved to MAGA extremists and handed Putin a propaganda victory by excising funding for Ukraine from the continuing resolution to fund the government. Kevin McCarthy sided with the Kremlin over Ukraine. Without Democrats stepping up as the adults in the room, his conference would have voted to shut the government down rather than support Ukraine's fight for freedom.

Moving forward, I am committed to supporting an aid package for Ukraine that supports their efforts against Russia's brutal invasion. You can hear more of my thoughts on WBUR and on CNN.

Lowering the Cost of Prescription Drugs: I joined the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability's hearing on Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs), which are the drug-pricing middlemen owned by insurance companies. It is unacceptable that PBMs drive up out-of-pocket costs for Americans through rent-seeking and self-dealing. I am working on legislation to increase transparency and lower prescription drug costs for Americans. No family should have to decide between their life-saving medications and paying for groceries.

Additionally, before we passed the continuing resolution to fund the government, I led 40 of my colleagues in calling for Medicare to continue its drug price negotiation program in the case of a government shutdown. The program will lower drug costs for millions of Medicare beneficiaries, as part of the president's commitment to improving economic security for Americans.

Supporting Israel: On Friday, Republicans put forth a deeply-flawed funding bill that cut security aid to Israel, which I opposed. While the bill did not pass, nearly all House Republicans voted in support of such a measure. Israel is our only reliable, democratic ally in the Middle East. Cutting their security assistance would make the entire region, and the United States, less safe.

ACT Press Conference

ACT Press Conference:
I hosted a press conference with the Association for Commuter Transportation to expand the use of public transit by commuters. I announced that I'll be introducing legislation to restore transit benefits, cut by President Trump, that reduce traffic and put money back in employees' pockets. My bill restores the deductibility of transportation benefits and encourages companies to provide transit subsidies to their employees. With employers struggling to attract and retain talent, our roads becoming more congested, and public transit ridership down, it's time to empower employers to offer better transit benefits.

Do you support employers offering transit benefits to support public transportation?

Around the Fourth

Supporting Local Farmers

Supporting Local Farmers: Over the summer, I heard from local farmers about their priorities in the upcoming Farm Bill Reauthorization at a roundtable I hosted. Now, I am advocating to improve crop insurance and SNAP benefits in the Farm Bill. Specifically, I support making SNAP benefits applicable to fresh local produce and including dairy and cheese.

Migrant Crisis: I've heard from many of my constituents about the influx of migrants to Massachusetts. I believe we must provide a safe haven for those seeking refuge, but I also understand the challenges that cities and towns are facing in trying to accommodate newcomers. Further, the crisis is made worse by federal work authorization delays.

That's why I cosponsored the Asylum Seeker Work Authorization Act to speed up and streamline how migrants get approved to work. We have employers struggling to find workers and migrants looking for work. Now, we just have to cut through the red tape, which will empower migrants to provide for themselves and their families and bolster the Massachusetts economy. The Asylum Seeker Work Authorization Act is just one part of the comprehensive immigration solution that Congress must deliver.

Onwards,

FPAC’s The Little Mermaid brings Broadway to MetroWest Region

The Franklin Performing Arts Company (FPAC) will open their 2023-24 Season with Disney’s The Little Mermaid. FPAC is known for bringing Broadway talent to their casts and creative teams and the Disney hit is no exception. Broadway’s Christopher Rice-Thomson will direct and choreograph the show running October 13-22 at THE BLACK BOX.

FPAC Student Apprentice Aida DiChiara will take the stage as Flounder alongside FPAC favorites Nick Paone and Michael Baratta as Chef Louis and Grimsby.

The ensemble is made up of New York and Boston professional performers, local artists, and students from collegiate performance programs including Harvard, Boston Conservatory, Berklee, and Dean College: Caitlin Beirne, Elena Baker, Liz Byrne, Maria Norris, Megan Elyse Fulmer, Melissa Campbell, Aidan Leach, Arielle Hardy, Brandon Wong, Brennan Stefanik, Gia Chessa, Hadasa Barmor, Julia Ormond, Laryssa Humphrey, Lindsay Tomas, Melissa Baratta, Myranda Rose Silva, Rachel Alvarez-Robinson, Takaaki Matsumoto, Tess Stevens, Tim Ayres-Kerr, Xochitl Tejeda-Cerda, and Yianna Zicherman.

Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney's The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture the heart with its irresistible songs, including "Under the Sea," "Kiss the Girl," and "Part of Your World." On staging this iconic story at THE BLACK BOX, director/choreographer Rice-Thomson comments, “THE BLACK BOX is so unique and truly allows us to tell the story a million different ways.”

Rice-Thomson, who recently finished a stint touring North America with Hamilton, has appeared on Broadway in The Book of Mormon and Pretty Woman. He is also the creator of the viral dance series “#Tappy.” His impressive performance credits also include a five year history with FPAC. Rice-Thomson first came to Franklin in 2018 when he starred in their production of Newsies. Since then he has appeared in shows like last season’s Something Rotten!, many galas and concerts, and choreographed The Sound of Music. He even premiered Christopher Rice’s The Tappy Christmas Special: LIVE with FPAC in 2019. “I never thought I’d say that I have a home-away-from-home in Franklin, Massachusetts, but I am so thrilled I get to say that now,” says Rice-Thomson. “So many things about the beautiful town and supportive community stuck with me. I am honored to be back with my Franklin family for this exciting new production of The Little Mermaid!”

Disney’s The Little Mermaid runs October 13-22 at THE BLACK BOX. For tickets and more information, visit FPAConline.com or call the box office at 508-528-3370.

FHS girls soccer, field hockey, and golf teams all post wins on Monday

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Monday, Oct 2, 2023.

Boys Soccer = Franklin, 0 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final
– In a battle of the top two teams in the Kelley-Rex division, Franklin and Attleboro finished scoreless after a hard-fought battle. Joshua Codella, Jaeden Beland, Zack Diffenderfer, and Mason Prive played well defensively for the Bombardiers.

Girls Soccer = Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 8 – Final
– Morgan Lovell and Anya Zub each scored twice to lead the Panthers to a big win that keeps them within one game of league-leading KP. Selene Hammad had three points (one goal and two assists), while Kelly O’Connor and Olivia Costa each had a goal and an assist. Ava Villella also found the back of the net, her second goal in the past three games. McKenna Lovell assisted one of her sister’s goals and Alli Powderly, Cailyn Bruno, and Cassidy Carmignani each recorded assists.

Field Hockey = Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 10
– Final – Franklin scored six goals in the first half, including a big four-goal second quarter, on its way to a win over Attleboro. Six Panthers found the back of the net led by a hat trick from Raena Crandall and two goals apiece from Haley Wernig and Chloe Essam. Emily Carney (two assists), Sophia Cuneo, and Sawyer Whitmore each scored once for Franklin.

Volleyball = Attleboro, 3 @ Franklin, 0 – Final
Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:
"Attleboro entered the season with two of the best players in the state on its roster in senior setter Natalie Brojek and junior Julia Leonardo, and now the emergence of junior Addie Shelton is taking the Bombardiers to the next level.

Shelton recorded a match-best 17 kills and gave the Bombardiers a huge boost in a come-from-behind second set, helping Attleboro secure a key Kelley-Rex sweep (25-22, 25-23, 25-22) on the road over Franklin.

“She’s stepped up three notches since last year, it’s been huge for us,” said Attleboro head coach Mary Katherine Runey. “She’s a quiet leader on the court and she’s really made sure she’s seeing the block, seeing the defense and being really strategic with where she places the ball. When she plays defense well, she’s swinging well. She’s a game changer when it comes to our offense when she’s hot.”"
