"Last" Comprehensive School Facility Planning meeting for this Subcommittee review progress towards redistricting (audio)

FM #1228 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1228 in the series.

This session shares the Comprehensive School Facility Planning Subcommittee meeting of Wednesday, June 5, 2024. Subcommittee Chair Dave Callaghan, Al Charles (remote), Erin Gallagher, Supt Lucas Giguere, Asst Supt Dr Tina Rogers, Asst Supt Paula Marano, Business Administrator Dr Bob Dutch, Food Service Director Colin Boisvert, and Facilities Director Mike D’Angelo participated.

This the last meeting of this subcommittee. There will likely be another subcommittee and/or combined with liaisons to provide oversight and School Committee involvement as the redistricting implementation moves forward.

Review of the Phase I planning for June was provided. Progress on the timeline is being made with announcements coming before the end of this school year.

Preliminary data shared to highlight the juggling being done to help determine the best alignment for equity in enrollment for the new schools, distribution of the students for demographic and other factors. The redistrict line remains to be determined and that proposal will likely be shared in advance of a school committee vote to approve that alignment in Sept/Oct.

The administrative teams for the new schools (principals, assistant principals, etc.) will be announced in advance of the final alignment so they can be involved in the next level of planning. Architect and landscape designers are being engaged to review the bus loops on the facilities for possible improvements to the traffic flow.

The meeting recording runs about 55 minutes.

Why are there multiple calendars?
There is a Cultural events calendar upon which other community events are layered to create the Community calendar.

Respectfully, the Library and Senior Center calendars are too full of events to include all their events so we tend to focus on the major events. Town and School meetings are also kept separate. Links for all the calendars are shared here:

The Cultural calendar displays only the cultural events

If you have an event to add to the calendar, you can use the form to submit it for publication:  https://bit.ly/Submit2Calendar

Fallen Hero Recognition: Private First Class Frank Grzyboski, U.S. Army - 06/05/24

Memorial event today (6/05/24) at 9 AM on the Town Common Veterans Walkway to honor PFC Frank Grzyboski, U.S. Army

This program will include the placing of a Memorial Wreath for the day, the playing of Taps, a salute from those present, and a reading of whatever history may be available for that veteran. This is a way of keeping the memory of that veteran alive.

Fallen Hero: Private First Class Frank Grzyboski, U.S. Army

Private First Class Frank Grzyboski, U.S. Army, was born March 7, 1924 the son of Eliash and Wictorya Grzyboski and lived with his parents, four sisters and two brothers during his early years in Framingham. Frank came to live here in Franklin with his sister, Mary Vendetti, at 131 East Street, the residence from which he enlisted on March 22, 1943. PFC Frank Grzyboski was a member of the 290th Infantry Division which was stationed in Missouri.

Frank was a hunter and a family story about him is as follows: “Frank had caught a pheasant which he had stuffed. His sister, Mary, had possession of the stuffed pheasant and kept it on top of a flat corrugated cardboard closet. One night while Mary was lying on her bed, the pheasant fell over. Mary thought nothing of this event until she later got word that her brother, Frank, had died at 7 pm that very same day the bird had fallen over.

Private First Class Frank Grzyboski, U.S. Army, died on June 5, 1943 during a shooting training accident.

PFC Frank Grzyboski was 19 years old at the time of his death serving his country during World War II.

FHS baseball team ends playoff run in 8th vs. St John's Shrewsbury (video)

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the Spring sports competition for Franklin High School on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

Baseball = Division 1 = #15 Franklin, 4 @ #2 St. John’s Shrewsbury, 5 – Final (8 inn.)
– Down to its last out in the top of the seventh, Franklin rallied for a pair of runs to keep the game going but St. John’s came through with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. A two-out, two-run double from senior Ben Yuknis plated a pair in the top of the third to give the Panthers an early lead. The Pioneers cut that lead in half with a run in the fourth and scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the sixth to seize their first lead of the game, 4-2. In the top of the seventh, sophomore Sean Kryzak led off with a walk, senior Henry Digiorgio singled, and Yuknis was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs. Senior Jake Shaughnessy came through with a single to left to bring in two runs and tie the game. Franklin had a chance to regain the lead in the top of the eighth when Kryzak singled and Dom Caccavelli walked, both with two outs, but the Pioneers got a big strikeout. St. John’s pushed across the winning run after a two-out single from Jamie Herlihy, who then stole second, and scored on a single from Brayden Mercier. Shaughnessy allowed one run on five hits and one walk, striking out seven in five innings.

Location of the in-person meeting: First Universalist Society in Franklin, 262 Chestnut Street, Franklin.

OPTION:  Join on Zoom

Meeting ID: 819 3030 4274
Passcode: 350ma
Dial-in +1 646 876 9923

As usual, we will share information about 350 Mass, and discuss and plan for local and state activities. Also, attendees at our Node meeting will share developments in their cities and towns.

This week we will highlight these events:

350 Mass Greater Franklin Node: Meeting, Thursday, June 6, 2024
350 Mass Greater Franklin Node: Meeting, Thursday, June 6, 2024

  • Mass Power Forward Lobby Day, Thursday, June 20. Sign up to join activists across the state. Meet with your legislators either at the State House or in their Districts, to lobby for Mass Power Forward priorities. For details and registration, sign up here.  (350 Mass is a leader in the Mass Power Forward coalition.)
  • In a related event, on Wednesday, June 12, 12:00-12:45 PM, 350 Mass will devote our monthly "Lunch.Climate.Action." Actionar to "The Art of Advocacy." Join us for more practice at how to effectively explore and enhance our lobby day skills. Information and RSVP here.
  • As context for our advocacy for strong climate action by our state's legislature, please take a moment to reflect on the severity of the climate crisis. India is suffering from extreme heat with temperatures above 120 degrees in the capital Delhi, and people and animals are dying in large numbers. In our hemisphere, record heat is impacting much of the U.S. and our neighbor Mexico.  We must cram in as much as possible in our climate bill(s)!  Massachusetts needs to do its part to push the energy transition!
  • MA Climate Legislation Update! June 10, 7:00 PM.  For an opportunity to learn about proposed Massachusetts climate change and climate justice legislation, join this webinar by Green Energy Consumers Alliance and The Climate Reality Project, featuring an outstanding panel of advocates and policy experts. Information and registration here.
  • Franklin Strawberry Stroll.  Friday, June 7 from 4 to 8 PM. Read the description here. There will be booths providing information about organizations and businesses, including 350 Mass and Energize Franklin. At our meeting on Thursday we will go over the details of our participation.

We will save the latter part of the meeting on Thursday for some social time, in particular to say farewell to Ralph Halpern, our Node co-coordinator (that's me). After about 6-7 years of participating in the Greater Franklin Node, I will resign from the Node because I am moving to a new home northwest of Boston. My wife and I are retired now and plan to start a new phase in a 55-plus condo community with, best or all, closer proximity to our young grandson and his parents. I expect to switch my 350 Mass affiliation to another Node, so I look forward to seeing many of you at rallies and events. As for our Greater Franklin Node, the work continues under Carolyn Barthel's tremendous leadership. In July, emails about meetings and activities will come to you from Node member Steve Derdiarian. If you're already active with the Node, thank you and keep up the good work. If you want to play a role confronting the enormous challenges we all face, I recommend 350 Mass and our Node as a great way to learn and participate.

For more news about ongoing and upcoming events, please sign up for the Climate Weekly email. Also, check out upcoming events on the 350 Mass website.

We look forward to another informative and action-oriented Node meeting. We hope you can join us, in person or on Zoom. We will send a reminder on Thursday.

Our next meeting after this week will be the 3rd Thursday of the month, June 20th.

Thank you.

Carolyn Barthel

Dogtopia of Franklin is the Top Dog on the Local Doggie Daycare Scene; scheduled to open June 17

Dogtopia, the nation’s leading dog daycare, boarding, and spa facility, is set to open a new location in Franklin on June 17, 2024. The new center will host an open house event on June 13th from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Located in the Franklin Village Plaza (475 Franklin Village Drive), Dogtopia of Franklin is looking forward to welcoming all local dogs and families.

The new Dogtopia location is operated by District Manager, Tara Gendreau. Tara was born in Boston and raised in Watertown. Later, she moved to Eastern Canada and that is where she was able to bring her passion for pets into her career. Tara spent 10 years managing pet stores across the Maritimes until returning to Boston, where she continued growing in the pet industry. Tara has been working with animals for over 25 years and is now following her dream of working with pups at Dogtopia of Franklin Village. Tara is very excited to bring fun and memories to the dogs in the area.

“Dogtopia will fit in perfectly in the Franklin community,” said Tara. “This area is full of dog lovers and pet parents. I cannot wait to be a part of each dog's most exciting day ever, over and over again!"

Providing personalized care for Franklin pups in a fun, safe, and comfortable environment, Dogtopia sets the industry standard among dog daycares with its three key benefits: education, exercise, and socialization. Dogtopia is the perfect place for pups to gain those important social skills and play with new furry friends. Along with their open house event, the Franklin location is also offering unlimited daycare at $79/week for the first six weeks (click here for details, limited spots available).

Dogtopia’s environment allows dogs to feel comfortable and enjoy plenty of playtime and exercise, and the various playrooms offer fun for dogs of similar size and temperament. Each playroom has compressed rubber flooring to ease joints, prevent slipping, and promote safer play. Dogtopia allows each dog to stay active throughout the day in an environment that is safe and clean, which can give local families peace of mind.

To ensure the safety of all pups, pet parents, and their team, Dogtopia in Franklin is taking extra safety precautions alongside their rigorous cleaning protocol. Dogtopia maintains a custom cleaning program that utilizes pet-safe products that clean, disinfect, and offer the highest level of safety available. The playrooms are sanitized twice daily when the pups are resting, and routine detail cleaning is performed throughout the day. Each playroom has a powerful HVAC unit, with in-duct UV lighting that funnels air out of the building to ensure clean, fresh air and eliminate bad bacteria and viruses.

Alongside providing quality care in a healthy, safe, and fun daycare center for local pups, Dogtopia also launched the Dogtopia Foundation with the noble cause of enabling dogs to positively change our world. Dogtopia of Franklin will focus on raising funds to sponsor a service dog in training for a veteran. One hundred percent of the funds raised will be donated directly to the cause. To learn more, visit www.dogtopiafoundation.org.

Dogtopia of Franklin's hours of operation will be from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM Monday through Friday, and 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. For more information on Dogtopia of Franklin, call 508-964-3695, email franklinvillage@dogtopia.com, or visit https://www.dogtopia.com/massachusetts-franklin-village/.
