Board of Health carefully considers body shop violation (audio)

FM #1271 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1271 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares the Town of Franklin Board of Health Meeting held on Wednesday, Sep 4, 2024. The meeting was conducted virtually. All three board members participated;  Sweet (chair) Mu-Chow, Harris (late). Health Dept staff present are heard as they respond to the roll call opening the session.

Quick Recap:

Reporting on the virtual Board of Health meeting underway, recording in process to share later. COVID cases in Aug 79, up from 64 in July. Risk for EEE remains low for Franklin. West Nile now has 6 cases in MA, one in Norfolk County, we are at moderate risk for this.

Be cautious, take all mosquito proactive measures. CPR class held 8/14. Continuing to monitor health issues. Flu clinic at Senior Center coming, 40 appts already filled, 40 remain available. US TB cases have increased from 2022 to 2023.

Personnel changes, John left, another to start later this month. Fall health fair at the Library, 17 vendors so far.

Question on Boar's Head recall, Town hasn't seen DPH request for info on invoices Jeff joining meeting, working on audio issue

Public hearing opens as advertised on agenda

Sunshine Lily Spa, owner present, applied for therapist licenses, CORI checked, opened business, inspection made after opening, 2 other staff members present not licensed. The only licensed individual not present at visit, hence ...

In violation of body works regulations, it was closed and has remained closed pending hearing. Owner states what has happened, he did have the unlicensed individuals working on trial, acknowledged that is a violation, did have license present but not … seen during the visit, has been relocated to another spot to be visible.

No charge for license application, most challenging part is for the individual to get to Franklin.

The regulation is really strict for a reason. May take 2-3 weeks to get an individual license. For other licenses, could have lost the state license having unlicensed individuals working.

Board discussion: proposal for provisional license for balance of yr... with monthly inspection

And a graduation to less frequent inspection overtime assuming safe conduct within license So moved to adopt with inspection regularly, failure of compliance results in revocation of said license

Owner agrees, will do as required

Motion to approve, passes via roll call 3-0

Moving to local upgrade request

Modification of 3 ft vs 4 as required per spec, straight forward, consultation agreed.

Motion to approve, passes via roll call 3-0

Motion to approve June minutes, with change of date and typo of double s's. As amended, moved to approve, second, passes via roll call by 3-0

DPH drill to confirm contact info for the Town, clarification via board member. No citizen comments,

Motion to adjourn , second, passes 3-0 via roll call

Volleyball = Franklin, 2 @ Oliver Ames, 3 – Final
Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com provides the game recap:
"The schedule this year gave the Hockomock League’s top volleyball teams a chance to start the season with a bang — and they delivered.

Moments after Attleboro knocked off Canton in a five-set thriller a couple towns over, Oliver Ames came through with a thrilling 3-2 win over Franklin, giving the Tigers their first win over the Panthers since 2019.

After falling behind a set to start off, Oliver Ames won two in a row to take the lead. Franklin answered with a win in the fourth to set up a fifth where the Tigers prevailed to win the match 18-25, 25-17, 25-20, 19-25, 15-10."

Town of Franklin: Government 101 - budget cycle (audio)

Continuing to bring forward items from the archives, we share this podcast episode on the financial budget cycle. About the only thing that has changed since the recording in April 2022, is that at the time, the Town was still working towards the AAA rating. The Town of Franklin received that accolade (May 2022) the month after this recording.

This shares my conversation with Town of Franklin Finance Director/Comptroller Chris Sandini and Treasurer/Collector Kerri Bertone. We had this conversation in the Franklin studio on Thursday, April 14, 2022.

We cover the following key topics

A typical day for Finance Director/Comptroller

A typical day for Treasurer//Collector

The budget cycle, and fiscal year (July to June)

Three financial years; past, current, and future all in the mix

Our conversation runs about 62 minutes. Links to the documents referenced during this meeting are included in the show notes.  Let’s listen to this recording of my conversation with Kerri and Chris.

@HockomockSports provides the outlook for FHS Volleyball for Fall 2024

Via our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the Fall sports outlook for Franklin High School

Franklin
2023 Record: 19-3 (Kelley-Rex division champions)
Head Coach: Emily Carens
Year after year, Franklin continues to lose some of the top players in the Hockomock League to graduation but these Panthers seem to find a way to reload each fall.

Emily Carens takes over at the helm for the season after spending the past two seasons on Sam Redmond’s staff. Carens was a standout player at Worcester State and was selected to the MASCAC All-Conference First Team three times in her career. While the Panthers will have to find replacements for a handful of key players, like four-year starter Taylor Lacerda, Carens has a strong pool of talented players back in the mix for the 2024 season. Junior Makayla Kuykendall already has two years of varsity experience and has established herself as one of the best all-around players in the league. Junior middle Olivia Alberti is coming off a breakout season and gives Franklin a legitimate threat at the net both offensive and defensively.

Carens also has a strong senior class in Brooke Daniels, Olivia Valante, and Faith Edgehill. That trio of players brings a wealth of varsity experience and their leadership of a team that will feature some new faces will be vital in Carens’ first year at the helm.

“One strength is our balance,” Carens said. “We are focusing on ‘One Team’ mentality this year. Everyone will positively contribute both offensively and defensively.”
