"This is the largest scam of this type we've ever seen"

I have shared many scam alerts from the Federal Trade Commission and other good sources. Here is a really good article getting into the details on how one of these phone scams worked and how it was taken down. That similar phone calls are still happening shows that there is still an opportunity for the nefarious folks to make some money.

The one thing we can do to stop this is to NOT to fall for the scam.

"On Nov. 24, 2014, a woman named Diana received a menacing phone call in Hernando, Miss., a small city nestled in the northwest corner of the state. A caller purporting to be an IRS agent claimed she owed back taxes and told her that agents were waiting to arrest her unless she paid up immediately. The caller was insistent, threatening, and urging her to act quickly. 

The demands eventually produced the desired result: After the "agent" ordered her to withdraw $19,625 in cash, Diana bought 21 prepaid cards called MoneyPaks equaling that amount at a local store. After purchasing the cards, she read the unique serial number off each MoneyPak card to the caller, effectively giving him all her money. 

The caller wasn't actually an IRS agent; he was an impostor from Worldwide Solution, a call center in India. No agents waited outside. Diana owed no back taxes. Hers just happened to be one of the millions of phone numbers dialed by an international conspiracy of con artists running a series of impostor schemes, according to a federal indictment issued in October 2016."

"Creating a framework for education in Franklin takes on a quite literal meaning as the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School’s new building is constructed. 

The new facility at 500 Financial Park Drive will have room for twice as many students, enrolling 900 for the 2019-2020 school year. The new building will also have up-to-date technology and separate classrooms for arts and music. Going from a capacity of 450 to 900 students, the new school has big plans. 

The building is a mass of steel beams and roofing, but before winter the walls will be sealed and roofing complete. During the colder months, workers will do what they can to finish the inside."

Tougias to present King Philip's Indian War at the Franklin Historical Museum - Oct 14

NY Times bestselling author Michael Tougias will give a slide presentation on the war between the Colonists and Native Americans in 1675-76 at The Franklin Historical Museum at 1:15 Sunday, October 14th, as part of the Museum’s Second Sunday Speaker Series.

Tougias is the author of the acclaimed Until I Have No Country (A novel of King Philip's War), and co-author with Eric Schultz of King Philip's War: The History and Legacy of America's Forgotten Conflict.

The first part of the presentation will discuss the Indian way of life, Colonial settlements, and the events leading up to the war. The second part covers the battles and the strategy during this cataclysmic war, which on a per capita basis was the bloodiest conflict in our nation's history.

Slides include battle sites, period sketches, historic markers, maps, and suggestions for visiting road-side history. Tougias also discusses Native strategy during the war and the challenges of writing a historic novel. Former Commissioner of Indian Affairs for Massachusetts and member of the Wampanoag Tribe, Edith Andrews, is quoted on the novel's back cover, commenting that Until I Have No Country "captures the essence of the Native American." The novel includes adventure, romance, and intrigue while staying true to historical facts. A book signing will follow the presentation.

Tougias is the author and co-author of 21 non-fiction books including the national bestsellers Rescue of the Bounty, A Storm Too Soon, Overboard! The Finest Hours: The True Story of the Coast Guard’s Most Daring Rescue (to be a Disney movie), Derek’s Gift, The Cringe Chronicle and his award-winning book, There’s A Porcupine In My Outhouse! (Misadventures of a Mountain Man Wannabe).

Non-stop Entertainment at THE BLACK BOX

THE BLACK BOX, an exciting theater, concert, and event venue provides Franklin and surrounding towns with non-stop entertainment. In the next few weeks alone, audiences can experience everything from fantastic local bands to Broadway stars.

September 21-23, THE BLACK BOX will house the Franklin Performing Arts Company’s production of Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The most recent landscape makeover at the SNETT (Southern New England Trunk Trail) entrance on Grove Street includes new signs, a cobblestone entrance, and a crushed stone pathway surrounded by shrubs and flowers. 

“It’s important for families in the area to have access to something that’s healthy,” Linda Amrich said. “It’s nice to have this family activity away from computers.”

FSPA to hold “How to Audition” Workshop - Sep 29

Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA) Director Raye Lynn Mercer will present a "How To Audition" Workshop on Saturday, September 29 from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. in the school's Recital Hall at 38 Main Street. 

Students and parents are invited to learn about the audition process in an entertaining, interactive format with demonstrations and time for questions from attendees. Included in the workshop are what to expect, how to prepare, and how to conduct oneself at any audition.

The workshop is appropriate for those getting ready for a first audition experience as well as those who are ready to raise the level of their audition presentation. “This workshop takes the mystery out of the process and demonstrates what happens before, during and after the audition. The right preparation and appropriate expectations help make auditioning a positive experience,” says Mercer.

In addition to preparing students for local auditions, Mercer and her staff successfully prepare high school students to audition for college performing arts programs. FSPA alumni are attending top colleges and conservatories including NYU Tisch, Penn State, Oberlin, Oklahoma City University, Hartt School of Music, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory, and Syracuse University, while FSPA's college graduates are enjoying active careers on Broadway, in national tours, regional theater, film and television. Current FSPA musical theater students have the opportunity to audition for New York City agents and casting directors as well as professional theater.

Registration for the "How To Audition" Workshop can be done in advance at the FSPA Office or by calling 508-528-8668. The workshop is open to anyone and recommended for beginner and intermediate performers and highly recommended for parents. 

The workshop is $20 per student, $30 for student and parent, and $5 per additional family member.

"In a game where chances are at a premium, with physical battles being waged all over the pitch, and with defenses largely coming out on top, finishing is the difference between taking home the points or leaving with none. 

Mansfield had one great chance in the box and put it away. Franklin had two chances in the box and both went narrowly off target. So, on Monday night at Pisini Field, the Hornets walked away with a hard-fought 1-0 win and stayed unbeaten, while, for the second time in a week, the Panthers lost a close game with one of the two defending Kelley-Rex division champions. 

“It’s such a tough opponent, such a tough place, a great coaching staff, so it’s a good win,” said Mansfield coach Kevin Smith."

– Mansfield senior Luke Savoie continued his hot start to the season, scoring a pair of goals in the Hornets’ win over Franklin. After a throw from Cam Eddy, freshman Dylan Buchanan found Savoie to put the Hornets up 1-0 in the 22nd minute. And just before halftime, Graham Wells played Savoie in behind the defense and the senior finished one-on-one with the keeper. Anthony Salisbury (five saves) and Cam Bovey (five saves) combined for the shutout for Mansfield.

– For Franklin, Regan Patterson and Amanda Lewandowski each had first half goals but the Panthers fell on the road to Mansfield. Cassi Ronan set Paterson up at the 22nd mark of the first half while Maeve Ledwith assisted on Lewandowski’s goal just over four minutes later. Anna Jardine made 11 saves in net for Franklin.

– Franklin senior Lauren McGrath went on a 9-0 service run during the third set to help the Panthers put away a pesky Mansfield side, 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-5). McGrath also had 25 assists and two aces while Riley Marino added seven digs and two aces. Maggie Doyle had a team-high eight kills and three blocks, Ellie Wisniewski added seven kills, Peyton Arone chipped in with six kills, and Hailey Sanders finished with five kills for Franklin. For Mansfield, Sam Sternberg had 11 digs, Katie Dardinski had five digs, and Olivia McGrath finished with six kills.

Boys Cross Country = King Philip, 36 @ Franklin, 23 – Final
– Franklin took four of the top six spots and seven of the top 10 to earn a victory over King Philip. Junior Tyler Brogan took first with 16:22, edging out King Philip’s Mike Griffin. Franklin senior Michael Hagen was third while sophomore Nicholas Calitri and senior Dylan Kehoe were fifth and sixth, respectively.

– King Philip had the top two finishers but Franklin’s depth paid off, taking the next three spots and five of the top eight spots. KP’s Maya Evans was first followed by teammate Ryenn Hart. Franklin’s Julia Fenerty, Sidney Hawks, and Kat Walbert were third, fourth, and fifth overall, respectively.

– Franklin’s Matt D’Errico earned match medalist honors, carding a round of 39 to pace the Panthers to a win at Stone-E-Lea over Attleboro. Jack Paterson added a 40 and Quinten Faro carded a 40 for Franklin. For Attleboro, Jake Moulton had a team-low round of 42.

In the News: Bellingham 140 construction begins; RealID popular at RMV

"It’s about to get even busier on the town’s stretch of Rte. 140 – at least for a few months. 

Contractors this week will likely begin a roughly $2.5 million road construction project to widen the intersection at Rte. 140 and Maple and South Maple streets, add lanes, and upgrade the traffic signals. 

“There will be congestion,” Bellingham Department of Public Works Director Don DiMartino said. “There will be construction delays.” 

He suggested drivers try to avoid the area, but acknowledged the route is key on several commutes. Rte. 140 links Bellingham to Interstate 495 and the Franklin commuter rail station, and is close to both downtown and an industrial zone."

"More than four months after the state started issuing driver’s licenses that comply with the federal Real ID security law, the standard license continues to be the most popular service option for customers at Registry of Motor Vehicles locations, according to data presented Monday. 

For customers who get their licenses at AAA locations instead of RMV branches, however, the Real ID is the most popular option, Registrar Erin Deveney told the Department of Transportation Board of Directors. 

Massachusetts in March began offering the Real ID-compliant licenses, which require additional documentation to obtain. Starting Oct. 1, 2020, the standard licenses that are not Real ID-compliant will no longer be accepted as identification for domestic air travel or entering federal buildings and nuclear power plants."

"Coffee With A Cop is a community outreach program that encourages citizens to become familiar with the officers who serve their community, ask questions, and express concerns.

One or two Franklin police officers will host a Coffee With A Cop gathering at Elizabeth's Bagels at 456 W. Central Street on October 3, 2018 from 8:30 - 10:30 AM.

There will be no formal presentations—neighbors are invited to drop in any time during the two-hour gathering to chat with an officer and other staff.

Community members can discuss and learn about neighborhood issues, traffic concerns, crime prevention, and how to connect with the FPD through social media and other technological tools."
