50th reunion for Franklin High School Class of 1971

The Franklin High School Class of 1971 held its’ 50th reunion on Friday evening October 1, 2021 at the Franklin Country Club. The Reunion Committee met over the course of the last 2 years to plan the event. Although there were concerns about COVID, in the end a safe and fun event was able to be held.

The celebration began on June 4th with some Classmates attending the FHS 2021 graduation, being recognized by Principal Hanna and given a warm welcome. This tradition of inviting the 50 year graduates was established many years ago by the FPS.

One of our Classmates, Colleen Pease Martin is a quilter. She came to the Committee last year to ask if we would consider recognizing the Veterans of the Class of 1971 through the Quilts of Valor (qovf.org) program. Her efforts spanned many months, communication  with our local Veterans Department and resulted in 6 quilts being awarded to Franklin Veterans at their August 7th Purple Heart event and 8 quilts being awarded to Veterans of the Class of 1971 during a ceremony at the Historical Museum before the reunion evening began. These quilts were donated by the Myrtle Beach Shorebirds, Myrtle Beach, SC. For more information about the Quilts of Valor go to: qovf.org The QOV ceremony was moving and respectful for those in attendance.

Some interesting facts about the Class of 1971:

  • We were the last 8th grade class to graduate from the Davis Thayer School

  • We attended double sessions all 4 years

  • We were the last class to hold our Prom in the cafeteria, the theme was Camelot

  • We had 264 graduates and the largest class since in 99 years

  • 46 of our classmates are deceased

  • We were the last class to graduate from what is now the Oak/Mann complex

Through the generosity of many of our classmates, we raised $7,000.00 in scholarship money; Seven $1000.00 scholarships were awarded to the Class of 2021.

The evening was all about reconnecting with classmates, enjoying good food and conversation. One of our classmates donated FHS logo masks for all to wear; one classmate made refrigerator magnets for all to take home; there was a display of fun 1971 facts and a guest book to sign in. Paul Vicario of Vicario Studios was the photographer for the event.

The reunion Committee wishes to thank all our classmates and hope to see you again!

by Pete Fasciano, Executive Director, Franklin●TV & wfpr●fm 10/10/2021

Candidates for local office are out and about, meeting with citizens and discussing the issues. Our own Steve Sherlock and Frank Falvey have met with many of them along the way. Tune in to their comments on Franklin●TV & 102.9 wfpr●fm. Also visit FranklinMatters.org any time for all the latest. Then cast your vote on November 2nd.
Currently, there are 12 candidates for the 9 Council seats. There are also 12 candidates for School Committee. Notably, three committee members have opted not to return.

Workforce insights: "They’ll go back to work when they feel safe – and well-compensated"

"The anemic September employment report, with only 194,000 jobs added, illustrates the extent to which the recovery stalled as coronavirus cases surged last month, but it also signals something deeper: America’s unemployed are still struggling with child-care and health issues, and they are reluctant to return to jobs they see as unsafe or undercompensated.

For months, economists predicted a surge in hiring in September as unemployment benefits expired for millions of workers and schools reopened across the country. Instead, last month marked the weakest hiring this year, and an alarming number of women had to stop working again to deal with unstable school and child-care situations.

The numbers are striking: 309,000 women over age 20 dropped out of the labor force in September, meaning they quit work or halted their job searches. In contrast, 182,000 men joined the labor force, Labor Department data showed."

Logistics issues, not sustainable

"Like toy blocks hurled from the heavens, nearly 80,000 shipping containers are stacked in various configurations at the Port of Savannah — 50% more than usual.

The steel boxes are waiting for ships to carry them to their final destination or for trucks to haul them to warehouses that are themselves stuffed to the rafters. Some 700 containers have been left at the port, on the banks of the Savannah River, by their owners for a month or more.

“They’re not coming to get their freight,” complained Griff Lynch, executive director of the Georgia Ports Authority. “We’ve never had the yard as full as this.”

MBTA Commuter Rail: Update (re: Starting Monday 10/11/21: Commuter Rail schedule change)

The new Fall/Winter Commuter Rail schedules go into effect on Monday, October 11th. Visit MBTA.com or pick up your schedule at South Station, North Station or Back Bay to see how we adapted our service for better seasonal performance.

The Fall/Winter schedule maintains the same frequent weekday service introduced this spring, with a few changes to train times in order to factor in slippery rail and snow.
The bike policy has also been updated: bikes are no longer accepted on board trains arriving in Boston between 6:30 am and 10:00 am or departing Boston between 3:30 pm and 7:00 pm.

Weekend service remains the same and busing continues:
-between West Gloucester and Rockport on the Rockport Line to allow for work on the Gloucester drawbridge.
-between Littleton/495 and Wachusett on the Fitchburg Line to facilitate Positive Train Control Implementation work.

Holiday service:
  • On Monday, October 11th, all lines will operate on a regular weekday schedule
  • On Thursday, November 25th, 2021 (Thanksgiving Day), Saturday, December 25th, 2021 (Christmas Day), and Saturday, January 1st, 2022 (New Years Day), all lines will operate on a weekend schedule.
  • On Friday, November 26th, 2021 (Day after Thanksgiving), Friday, December 24th, 2021 (Christmas Eve) and Friday, December 31st, 2021 (New Years Eve), all lines will operate on a regular weekday schedule.

Town Council Meeting - 10/06/21 - Three audio segments available

FM #624-625-626 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 624-625-626 in the series.

This session shares part of the Franklin, MA Town Council meeting held on Wednesday, October 6, 2021.

The meeting was conducted in a hybrid format: members of the Town Council and Town Administration personnel, the Police retirement and promotion individuals, along with their guest and family members were in the Council Chambers, some members of the public participated in person, some via the Zoom conference bridge, all to adhere to the ‘social distancing’ requirements of this pandemic period.

I’ve split the just about two hours and forty minutes ( 2:40 total elapsed time) into three (3) logical segments:

  • First - covers the opening, citizen comments, recognition for the Cultural Council and four appointments (~28 mins)

  • Second - covers the Franklin Public Schools presentation and Q&A session (~ 87 minutes)

  • Third - covers the Legislation for Action, Council Comments and meeting close. (~ 46 minutes)

The show notes contain links to the meeting agenda. Let’s listen to this segment of the Town Council meeting of Oct 6, 2021
