"The local version of the nationwide “Kilos for a Cure” competition that uses its profits to fund research for the American Cancer Society will be hosted again by RWL Weightlifting. 

Scores from across the country are combined online during the month-long competition. Scores are tallied by both weight lifted, and donations collected. 

To sign up for the competition, visit The American Cancer Society website and search “Kilos for a Cure.” The competition starts on Oct. 1, when the full workout will be announced. All results must be reported by Oct. 31."

Lisa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far. 

My business partner, Patrick Dreier, and I, founded Encore Music Academy and Recording Studios on a bit of a whim. In August, 2011, we were both teaching music out of our homes, and running a recording studio out of Pat’s basement. While on the phone one day, I tossed out the idea of opening a school together, which was met with silence. I traveled to Canada that week and when I returned, Pat called and said, “About that idea you had …” to which I replied, “What idea?” and that is how Encore was born. Just one month later, on September 29, we signed Encore into existence!"

FHS girls volleyball posts win, field hockey gains tie against Mansfield

From Hockomock Sports we share the results of the Franklin High School fall sports results from Monday, Sep 25.


Boys Soccer = Mansfield, 3 @ Franklin, 2 – Final
– Mansfield built a 3-0 lead over the first 25 minutes of the game and then held off a late push from the Panthers. John Cooney opened the scoring on an assist from Sean Lanzillo in the eighth minute and just three minutes later, Jared Gabrilowitz made it 2-0 on a feed from Cullin Anastasia. Nick Wisnieski converted a chance from Gabrilowitz in the 22nd minute to make it 3-0. Franklin got on the board when sophomore Sam Stowell converted a penalty kick in the 38th minute. Sophomore Lucas Mauro netted Franklin’s second goal off an assist from Nasir Brahimi. Nick Ferraz made six saves in net for Mansfield.

Volleyball = Mansfield, 0 @ Franklin, 3 – Final
– Franklin had a strong, well-rounded attack to pick up a sweep against Mansfield. Ellie Wisniewski (ace), Meaghan Maguire (block) and Hailey Sanders all had eight kills apiece while Maggie Doyle (three blocks) added four kills. For Mansfield, Meg Hill added eight kills, Julia Harrison had six kills and Mikayla Kearney chipped in with 10 digs.


Field Hockey = Mansfield, 2 @ Franklin, 2 – Final

"It felt like mid-summer on the turf at Beaver Field on Monday as Franklin hosted Mansfield in a Kelley-Rex showdown, but the weather didn’t slow down either sides’ offense as the two sides battled to a 2-2 tie. 

Just two minutes into the game, Franklin had a scoring opportunity but the Panthers couldn’t find the back of the net. Four minutes later, Mansfield had an opportunity of its own but a kick save by Franklin goalie Anna Jardine (nine first half saves) kept the Hornets off the board. Ten minutes in, Franklin had another good scoring chance but a nice save by Mansfield goalie Kayla Hunter (11 saves) prevented the Panthers from taking an early lead. 

With 16 minutes left in the half, Mansfield’s shot was kicked away by Jardine and to the top corner of the circle where Ann Maher put the ball on her stick and drove a shot to the corner to put the Hornets up 1-0. 

Two minutes later, a would-be Franklin goal was waved off after it ruled the shot hit the foot of a Franklin player. Mansfield would then see their best scoring opportunity for the rest of the half when the Hornets had three shots on goal in a sequence with nine minutes left in the first half, but stout play from Jardine and the Franklin defense managed to keep the Franklin deficit at one."

Girls Soccer = Franklin, 0 @ Mansfield, 3 – Final

"While it is only about a third of the way through the league campaign, Monday night’s meeting between unbeaten Mansfield and Franklin at Alumni Field was an opportunity for one of the Kelley-Rex’s perennial powers to grab a slim advantage at the top of the table. 

It was a opportunity that the defending division champion Hornets would not pass up. Mansfield dominated large portions of the game, created the majority of the few scoring chances that either team managed, and came away with a 3-0 victory that puts it one game up on the Panthers and King Philip. 

“We played very well,” said Mansfield coach Kevin Smith after the game. “It’s good to play like that against a really quality opponent.” 

As expected from a meeting between these two programs, the game was combative and fast-paced, but neither team was able to find space for a shot against two well-organized defensive units (the top two defensive teams in the league)."

"Fielding full rosters of varsity, junior varsity and freshmen football teams years ago was as simple as putting out a sign up sheet and watching the names pile up. 

These days, some local high school football coaches have to perform their best sales pitch to encourage students and their parents to step onto the gridiron amid fears of concussions, other injuries and a plethora of other high school sports offerings. 

“It used to be young men couldn’t wait to play high school football,” said Dan Haddad, Bellingham High School head football coach. “Now you’re a salesman. They’re just not coming out.”
