Lily Eattimo, has this write up for Pantherbook:

"Fall Sports are now officially over – Photographers Sammy Patel and Hunter Smith are preparing for Winter Sports, including basketball, hockey, and indoor track, among others.

You may have seen Patel and Smith’s work on Franklin High’s TV’s, or your Instagram and Twitter, as they run the Creative Media Team for Franklin High School.

The Creative Media Team is a subsection of Pantherbook, focused on creating, editing and designing graphics for Franklin High School sports. Their work, including both photo and video, is distributed on the Franklin High TVs, seen throughout the school, or on their Instagram and Twitter accounts. "more worried about what the implications of that lack of trust in public health" (audio)

"When the coronavirus vaccines first emerged, they were shown to have 94 to 95 percent efficacy in preventing symptomatic COVID-19.

It was a situation where the message from public health officials was fairly simple – get the shot and help prevent the spread of the disease. Vaccine mandates, passports, and other measures were all deemed smart public health policy.

But as variants of the disease began to appear and multiply, the vaccines couldn’t keep pace. Infections spread rapidly and Shira Doron, an infectious disease physician and hospital epidemiologist at Tufts Medical Center, said public health messaging couldn’t keep up."

The Pantry Food Elves Are Busy Canvassing Your Neighborhood!

Franklin Food Pantry Food Elves 2022
Franklin Food Pantry Food Elves 2022
"Food prices increased by 13.1% nationally and 10.9% locally this year and have not only impacted our neighbors but have increased The Franklin Food Pantry’s operating costs as well. Fundraisers like Food Elves are critical to our organization especially now amid rising food prices and increasing need.

Last year our Elves raised over $95,000! These funds help us continue to provide services and food, including fresh produce, proteins and dairy to our neighbors in need. Food Elves is our largest fundraiser and we can't wait to see what our Food Elves accomplish this year!

Food Elves will be canvassing Franklin neighborhoods starting this week. Look for your purple envelope and consider making the holidays brighter for your neighbors by placing a donation in the purple envelope for pickup by your local Food Elf. If you have not been visited by a Food Elf you can donate here or use the QR code."

Register O'Donnell Tours FBMS' Yawkey Housing Resource Center, "Suits for Success" Program Makes Clothing Donation

Norfolk County Register of Deeds William P. O'Donnell donated 10 full suits and more than 40 other articles of business attire to Father Bill's & MainSpring (FBMS) through the "Suits for Success" program during a tour of the construction site for the Yawkey Housing Resource Center on Nov. 17.

'The Suits for Success' Program and Father Bill's & MainSpring share a common goal, which is to provide individuals who are struggling with homelessness or are at risk of homelessness with the opportunity to succeed and find independence," remarked Register O'Donnell. "We're happy to assist Father Bill's & MainSpring with this clothing donation."

The "Suits for Success" program, developed by Register William O'Donnell in partnership with several local charities, collects donations of suitable clothing to be distributed to groups like Father Bill's & MainSpring and to individuals who may need appropriate attire for employment interviews.

During the event, John Yazwinski, president and CEO of FBMS, led Register O'Donnell on a tour of the ongoing construction of the Yawkey Housing Resource Center. The project will consist of two buildings: the first is a resource center, and the other building will consist of 25 to 30 apartments for permanent housing. The Housing Resource Center will include two dormitories, a medical clinic, showers, a laundry area, and a commercial kitchen.

"It means a lot to us to have the support of the local community and to know that others see the value in a project like this," said Yazwinski. "A value that encompasses not only the immediate benefit of offering a place to stay for those who are struggling with homelessness, but also the resources that this facility will provide to assist individuals in achieving self-sufficiency."

The Yawkey Housing Resource Center will provide those in need with healthcare, meal services, young adult services, education services, veteran services, and substance abuse treatment.

"Projects like 'Suits for Success' and the future Yawkey Housing Resource Center are truly needed, and it's a great resource for helping people enhance their opportunities in life," said Register O'Donnell.

Since February 2009, the "Suits for Success" program, in partnership with Interfaith Social Services of Quincy, Father Bill's & MainSpring of Quincy and Brockton, the Boston Veterans Administration's Healthcare System Voluntary Service Program, and InnerCity Weightlifting, has collected more than 9,000 articles of clothing.

"We've learned over the last decade that programs like 'suits for success' work," said Register O'Donnell. "This program has given many people the confidence to take the next step in their lives, and we hope it can continue its successful mission."

To donate to "Suits for Success," individuals may bring their donations of business-appropriate attire for men and women to the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds, 649 High Street in Dedham, between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Clothing donations must be clean, without stains, in style, on hangers, or neatly folded. The donation may also be placed in either re-usable tote bags or green plastic bags. Suggested donations for men include suits, dress shirts, pants, and ties. Donations for women include suits, dresses, blouses, skirts, and women's dress pants.

"I thank all those who donated to our 'Suits for Success' program, and I hope other local residents and businesses will consider making a clothing donation," said Register O'Donnell. "I feel like this program can truly make a world of difference in someone's life."

Fiscal year 2024 budget cycle timeline changes slightly with a new Governor

The Town of Franklin starts the Fiscal Year 2024 budget cycle as soon as the tax rate is set for FY 2023. The budget cycle flowchart is posted on the Town page ->

The assumptions on State aid (Chap 70, etc.) usually come in January with the release of the Governor's Budget. The first year of the legislative 2 year cycle the release is call H1, the second year H2. With a new Governor, the timeline starts later in their first term.
"House 1; House 2
The Governor's budget recommendations for the next fiscal year. According to the Constitution, it must be filed within 3 weeks of the convening of the Legislature in January. Newly-elected governors must file House 1 within 8 weeks. In the second year of a legislative session, the Governor's budget is referred to as House 2."
Incoming Governor Healey is required to release their new budget on or before March 1, 2023.

Last year, we recorded a budget cycle conversation with Comptroller Chris Sandini and Treasurer/Collector Kerri Bertone. We get into the budget cycle and all the ins and outs of the details. The only thing that has changed is during the recording we were talking of the possible AAA rating. Since then, the Town has officially been awarded that. You listen to that discussion here:

Visit the Town Budget page for all the info on the cycle and recent budgets

The backstory to a famous children's story

Maria Popova writes of the backstory to the familiar children's story:

"Six weeks before my grandmother was born on the other side of the world, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle announced the publication of a book described only as “a children’s story of a bull,” sold for $1.

In The Story of Ferdinand (public library), a gentle-souled young misfit sits out the perpetual head-butting by which his peers hone their bull-skills, choosing instead to smell the flowers under his favorite cork tree in solitude. His mother, at first worried about his bullness, recognizes her son’s difference and trusts that he would find his way.

And so he does."
