"Presented by the Highland Street Foundation and produced by the Boch Center, ArtWeek expanded its partnership with Music Drives Us to provide grants for events during its 2018 festival (April 27 – May 6). 

A Franklin resident, Lydia Lucas, received a $500 performance grant to support the presentation of the event, Drumming Around the World, during ArtWeek. The event will take place on Saturday, May 5 from 2-3 p.m. at the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School, 201 Main St., Franklin. 

Through this hands-on musical experience, Drumming Around the World focuses on exploring different cultures and their musical styles through the art of drumming. Participants will learn elementary to intermediate rhythms by ear, participate in drum circles, practice improvisation skills, and learn the history of hand drumming."

"The U.S. opioid crisis has passed a dubious milestone: Overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids like fentanyl have surpassed deaths involving prescription opioids. 

This change occurred in 2016, according to data published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. And it seemed to happen pretty suddenly. 

Data from the National Vital Statistics System show that there were 42,249 opioid-related overdose deaths in 2016. That includes 19,413 that involved synthetic opioids, 17,087 that involved prescription opioids and 15,469 that involved heroin. (In some cases, more than one type of drug was implicated in the death.)"

FSPA All Access Pass For Prospective Students To Feature Complimentary Spring Concert Tickets

Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA) is pleased to provide prospective students with complimentary tickets to FSPA Spring Concert performances as part of the school’s All Access Pass program. Families are invited to learn more about FSPA programs in music, dance and drama. The Spring Concert shows provide a dynamic way to experience what the school has to offer across many dance disciplines, voice, acting, instrumental music, and musical theater programming. 

Spring Concert performances will be presented on Saturday, May 19 at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. and on Sunday, May 20 at 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. at the Franklin High School Auditorium, located at 218 Oak Street. Featuring FSPA students of many ages and levels, Spring Concert is presented in an audience-friendly, 90-minute format.

Founded in 1985 by Director Raye Lynn Mercer, FSPA has been dedicated to the enjoyment of the arts for all ages and to the artistic growth and development of young people. The school offers classes in all dance disciplines, acting, musical theater, voice, and instrumental instruction, whether for recreational enjoyment or serious study. FSPA is also home to the Little Music School, an innovative program that teaches children as young as 18 months to play the piano. 

An extensive calendar of year-round performing opportunities features musicals, plays, ballets, voice and instrumental recitals, opera scenes, musical theater and dance company showcases, and more. Many FSPA students are also cast, by audition, in the affiliated Franklin Performing Arts Company’s annual season of shows. FSPA TALENT offers management services for young performers who elect to pursue professional opportunities.

FSPA is also proud to offer FSPA Academy, an academic alternative for students seeking a challenging curriculum in a supportive, flexible environment that encourages their creative goals. Provided Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in partnership with TEC Connections Academy Commonwealth Virtual School (TECCA), the program builds upon TECCA’s state-approved online curriculum and features an enhanced emphasis on arts, language, and culture, including Music Theory, foreign language conversation classes, field trips and more. 

In addition to the Academy, FSPA also offers FSPA AfterSchool, an enrichment program for students in grades K-5, providing supervised recreational experiences, including games, crafts and other creative arts activities. The program begins at the close of the regular school day, with transportation available from Franklin and Medway schools.

Prospective students and families should call FSPA at 508-528-8668 to reserve their complimentary tickets and schedule a trial class or tour of the facilities. Classes continue at FSPA through June 25 and the summer session begins on July 2.

Noviello selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week

"Franklin senior Jake Noviello has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for April 22 through April 28. Noviello is the 26th player selected for the 2017-18 school year and the third player chosen during the spring season. 

Noviello starred on the mound and at the plate this week to help Franklin win three games and move into first-place in the Kelley-Rex division. The Fairfield University-commit tossed his second straight shutout on Monday, hit an important home run on Tuesday and was part of a comfortable win on Saturday, as the Panthers pushed ahead of three division rivals to take the top spot in the standings. 

“Jake really set a tone for us on the hill on Monday with a great effort,” said Franklin head coach Zach Brown. “And then he carried that all the way through the week. Offensively he had a big day against Attleboro. He’s just been really steady defensively and as a leader. He was a really big part of us going 3-0 last week.”

– Franklin pushed across five runs in the first inning, highlighted by Jackie Cherry’s three-run home run, and never trailed in a win on the road at Canton. The Panthers added four more runs in the second and then added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Tara Hartnett had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI, Peyton Arone went 3-for-3 with an RBI, and Natalie Stott had a two-run single. Cherry and Emily Valentino combined for 10 strikeouts for Franklin.

In the News: ArtWeek continues through Sunday; Downtown Partnership looking for new members

"Just like the waxing moon, Franklin waxed full of arts over the weekend, making for a successful kick-off to the town’s first ArtWeek celebration. 

An evening featuring a sampling of mini performances at the Franklin Historical Museum on Friday blossomed into a full day of creativity at various locations around town the next day, with a multi-media watercolor workshop, a chalk art event, creation of origami cranes, rendering of live performances into sketches and water color paintings, a fairy tale-based comedy, a family paint session, a dance performance and a musical theater concert. 

It all continued on Sunday afternoon, with a performance by the Prolatio Singers and a concert by classical pianist Diana Fanning.

And that was just the start. The week-long celebration of the visual and performing arts, which the Franklin Cultural Council has organized in collaboration with Boston’s annual festival, runs through this Friday.

"The Franklin Downtown Partnership invites businesses, groups and residents to join the organization to help revitalize town center and support local Franklin businesses. 

The Partnership is well known for its popular community events, including the Strawberry Stroll, the Harvest Festival and the Holiday Stroll, but the non-profit group is involved in many more endeavors. 

For the past 16 years, the Franklin Downtown Partnership has played a significant role in the town’s revitalization projects. The FDP has assisted with design and infrastructure improvements like signage, downtown green space and patios, the Historical Museum sculpture, the Horace Mann sculpture, spring flowers, holiday decorations, and many economic development and marketing initiatives. 

“We currently have nearly 250 members and we would love for more people to join, get involved and be a part of our long-term success,” says Executive Director Lisa Piana. “We are a group of individuals focused on creating a vibrant community for our businesses, our neighbors, and our visitors. Our focus is to encourage people to shop locally and support Franklin businesses.”

"The Charles River Pollution Control Board is seeking Franklin volunteers to take the place of long-time member Eugene Guidi, who is taking his leave after 19 years. 

“We need members there,” he said. “It’s hard to get people to join.” 

The Charles River Pollution Control District includes a regional wastewater treatment plant located in Medway that treats up to 5.7 million gallons a day.
The board is designed to have three Franklin members, but hasn’t had a third member for quite some time, Guidi said. With him and his nearly two-decades experience also on the way out, the town is seeking interested volunteers in a multitude of relatable fields. 

“People on the board have been finance people, insurance people, construction people, engineering people,” he said. “We’re really overseeing and auditing the operation of a business.”

Electric Youth Anti-Bullying Workshop For Children - May 3

Electric Youth (EY), the international touring ensemble of talented young singer-dancers trained at the Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA), will host and facilitate a fun anti-bullying workshop for children this Thursday evening, May 3 at 6 p.m. The ArtWeek 2018 event will take place at FSPA, located at 38 Main Street in downtown Franklin. 

Partnering with Bully: The Adjective, Electric Youth will use music and drama activities to create dialogue around positivity, inclusion and the importance of valuing relationships. The interactive workshop is free and geared to children ages 8-12. The event will also introduce an ongoing EY Friendship Challenge. Come meet the members of Electric Youth as they share their personal stories about friendship. Celebrate your own stories of friendship in return and work together with EY to bring these stories to life on the stage. 

Participants are asked to register for the workshop and arrive promptly at 6 p.m. for the hour-long event. Participants will receive a special certificate for taking the Electric Youth Friendship Challenge. This ArtWeek event is supported by Music Drives Us.

Electric Youth has released six professional albums and toured Europe 14 times, with performances at England’s Arundel Festival, Disneyland Paris, professional theaters in Bristol, London and Windsor, and such renowned venues as Sanremo’s Ariston Theatre and Vienna’s Konzerthaus, Musikverein and Schonbrunn Palace. 

EY also has headlined Fourth of July shows for U.S. troops and their families stationed in Italy at Camp Ederle, Camp Darby and Aviano Air Force Base. The ensemble has performed on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, on Fox-TV and WBZ Radio, and at Fenway Park, Gillette Stadium, Mechanics Hall, the Smithsonian Museum Theater, the United Nations and the American Embassy in Rome. Electric Youth 2018 will tour Austria and Italy this summer.

In the News: Sante Fe Burrito Grill opening Monday, April 30

"With Acapulco’s, Chipotle and Taco Bell a short drive away, the owner of Franklin’s newest Mexican eatery, Santa Fe Burrito Grill, Hector Angel said he’s not too worried. 

The fast-casual restaurant will open in early May, taking the place of Rick’s, which closed in 2014, at 28 West Central St., next to the fire station. 

The food is locally harvested, fresh, and more authentic than competitors, he said. Also, he said, it tends to be cheaper. 

“We make everything from scratch daily here,” he said. “You can tell that the flavor is fresh. You can tell nothing is being reheated. It’s more authentic, more exciting ... And we’re below Chipotle’s price,” he laughed."
