Candidate Forum - Oct 21, 2021 - Forum outline details

There is a Candidate Forum scheduled for Thursday, Oct 21, 2021 at 6:30 PM. The Forum will be broadcast live from the Senior Center. The following information was sent to the candidates and is shared here to let you know what to expect.

Due to time constraints, only candidates in competitive races were invited to participate: Town Clerk (2), Planning Board (4), Town Council (12), and School Committee(12).

The format will ensure that each candidate gets to speak on each of the questions asked.

• A lottery will determine the order of candidate response by role

• The first candidate will get 2 minutes to answer the question

• Each other candidate will get 1 minute to add to or differentiate from the prior answer(s)

• Note given the number of candidates overall, each candidate will not be guaranteed a chance to lead the response to a question. The order of response will be based upon a drawing as the candidates arrive for the evening. 

• We ask all candidates to be considerate of the other candidates (and the audience) and keep within their time allotment. A timer will be used to track, signs will alert candidates of time running out.

The Town Clerk candidates are scheduled to begin, followed by Planning Board candidates, then Town Council candidates, and last but not least, the School Committee candidates.

The event will be held at the Franklin Senior Center. Franklin TV will broadcast the event live. They will also record for rebroadcast. Franklin Matters will share the audio output via podcast.

The questions asked of each will attempt to be specific to the topics appropriate for the role and will not be released in advance. 

The audience can respectfully and quietly observe (recall this is being broadcast live) and should have time to follow up with individual candidates at the end of the evening.

Note: the schedule assumes ALL the candidates invited do appear. If a candidate can't appear, and does send a statement, it can be read into the record for each role segment. Such statements should only be 1 minute in length.

If not all candidates do appear, and/or not all non-participants send statements, then the schedule would adjust accordingly. The organizers are also mindful of a School Committee Policy subcommittee meeting scheduled for the same evening from 6 - 7:30 PM (hence the order of candidate roles).

Closing Weekend of FPAC’s Mary Poppins at THE BLACK BOX

The Franklin Performing Arts Company (FPAC)’s production of Disney & Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins runs through October 24 at THE BLACK BOX. The production is choreographed by and stars Broadway’s Clay Rice-Thomson. Everyone's favorite practically perfect nanny takes flight in THE BLACK BOX for this Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious musical adventure. 

The production stars NYC’s Kaley Were as the title character. Were has performed regionally and across America with The Wizard of Oz National as well as at Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma (Bernice Bobs Her Hair, Mary Poppins, Oklahoma!, Big Fish), and Disney Cruise Line (Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy, Disney Dream). She has most recently been sailing the seven seas with Disney Cruise Line, performing on the Disney Dream in the IAAPA award-winning production of Beauty and the Beast. Were graduated from Oklahoma City University's Bass School of Music with a Bachelor of Music in Music Theatre. This will be her first production with FPAC.

Choreographing the production and starring as the loveable chimney sweep Bert, is Broadway’s Clay Rice-Thomson. Rice-Thomson has performed on Broadway in KING KONG (King’s Company), Newsies (Spot Colon), Matilda (Michael Wormwood), and the Broadway National Tours of WICKED (Chistery), Jesus Christ Superstar, West Side Story (A-rab), and Cameron Macintosh’s Oliver. His TV credits include Saturday Night Live, The TONY Awards, MACYS Thanksgiving Day Parade, The Tonight Show, GMA, The Late Show, The View, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and more. With FPAC, Rice-Thomson choreographed Matilda, starred in Christopher Rice's The Tappy Christmas Special: LIVE!, and most recently played Aaron Schultz in summer 2021’s Legally Blonde.  

Audience member Jen from Medfield comments, “It was a Broadway show in a small arena.” She continues, “It’s just so great to be out again in a theater.” 

FPAC’s production, directed by Raye Lynn Mercer, is presented with a live professional orchestra and the spectacular aerial effects of Flying By Foy. Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's Mary Poppins delighted Broadway audiences for over 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Mary Poppins is an enchanting mixture of irresistible story, unforgettable songs, breathtaking dance numbers, and astonishing stagecraft.

FHS field hockey and Volleyball teams post wins on Tuesday

Field hockey = Franklin, 7 @ Taunton, 0 – Final 
– Franklin’s Kaitlyn Carney scored a first quarter hat trick and the Panthers never looked back in a win over Taunton. Haley Wernig opened the scoring less than a minute in and Carney followed with three straight before the first 15 minutes expired. That score held over the next two quarters before Ella Mahoney scored in the fourth and Shaw Downing (who also had three assists) scored back-to-back goals to get to 7-0. Payten Crandall had an assist for the Panthers.

Volleyball = Franklin, 3 @ Taunton, 0 – Final 
– Franklin made it three straight wins by taking down Taunton, winning all three in straight sets, this time a 25-16, 25-13, 25-23 victory over the Tigers. Sophomore Taylor Lacerda had a strong all-around game with nine kills, nine digs, and three aces for the Panthers. For Taunton, Mikayla Cleary had a strong game with nine kills and a pair of blocks while Dani Lofgren (nine digs), Emily Machado (six digs), and Jess Foley (six digs) anchored the defense.

Stefano: The True Story of Shakespeare's Shipwreck, Wednesday, October 20, 6:30 p.m.

American public media series Hit and Run History presents their adventure-travel documentary on Mayflower pilgrim Stephen Hopkins, Stephano: The True Story of Shakespeare's Shipwreck.

The one-hour film follows the story of the only Mayflower passenger who had been to North American previously. A decade earlier, Hopkins had been aboard a Jamestown-bound ship that wrecked on Bermuda, inspiring Shakespeare's final play, The Tempest.

Shot on location, the intrepid Hit and Run History crew retraces Hopkins' life crisscrossing the Atlantic just as England made its first steps as a colonial power. Hampshire, Bermuda, Jamestown, Plymouth and London, Hopkins' came to know Native Americans in New World and Old. Pocahontas, Squanto and Massasoit – experience that would serve him and the Separatists aboard the Mayflower in establishing their fledgling settlement in New England.

Two-time Emmy-nominated producer and host Andrew Giles Buckley, a Hopkins descendant, grew up hearing stories that New Plymouth's iconoclast tavern keeper may have the model of The Tempest's drunken and mutinous Stephano. In their Gumshoe Historian style, Buckley and crew of Hit and Run History seek out the reality of a man who was everywhere at the founding of America.

The film was first broadcast on Rhode Island PBS in 2020 and has a screenings schedule starting February at the Pilgrim Hall Museum, Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, and currently a dozen other locations in Massachusetts. Following the broadcast in New England, it will be available to run on other public media stations across the country.

The screening of the film will feature an introduction by producer Andrew Buckley, followed by a question and answer session. This program is free and open to the public.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Franklin Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

School Committee candidate Elise Stokes

FHS field hockey along with both girls and boys soccer teams post wins on Monday

Boys Soccer = Taunton, 0 @ Franklin, 1 – Final 

– Click here for a photo gallery of this game. – Franklin scored the lone goal of the game just under 15 minutes into the contest to earn a season split with Taunton. Tim O’Keefe served a free kick from the right wing into the area that was redirected before falling to the feet of senior Terry O’Neill, who buried his chance from in close. The Panthers had a handful of good looks in the second half but couldn’t tack on a second goal; Taunton keeper Javonte Fernandes had a pair of terrific stops to help keep the deficit at one.

Girls Soccer = Franklin, 4 @ Taunton, 0 – Final 

– Stella Regan’s brace powered Franklin to a road win that keeps the Panthers in first place in the Kelley-Rex, two points ahead of Mansfield and KP. Kelly O’Connor and Selene Hammad each scored as well for the Panthers, while Anya Zub had a pair of assists. Jackie O’Neill and Emma Reilly also had helpers in the win, while Rachel Welch and Haylie Aniki split the clean sheet in goal. Franklin coach Jodi Klein praised her team’s composure and ball movement.

Field Hockey = Franklin, 5 @ Algonquin, 2 – Final 

– Franklin scored three goals in the final quarter to break a tie game and pull away from Algonquin for its 13th win of the season. Algonquin twice took the lead, the first coming in the opening quarter but a goal from Shaw Downing (from Kaitlyn Carney) four minutes later leveled the match, which stayed 1-1 into halftime. Algonquin regained the lead less than a minute into the third but Kendall Jones finished a pass from Carney four minutes later to make it 2-2 heading into the fourth. Haley Wernig put the visitors ahead less than five minutes into the fourth off of Carney’s third assist of the game and then Carney scored herself with just under five minutes to go to make it 4-2.Jones tacked on her second goal of the game two minutes later on a pass from Kaeley Dubriske. Jones also made a pair of huge defensive saves while goalie Megan Sullivan had seven stops.
