Both FHS girls & boys basketball teams top North Attleboro on Friday

Via HockomockSports.com and Twitter, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Friday, January 13, 2023. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below. 

 

Boys Basketball = Franklin, 72 @ North Attleboro, 59 – Final 

– Locked in a one-point game just over a minute into the fourth quarter, Franklin ran away with a win behind a strong final six minutes. North Attleboro sophomore Jonnie Obuchkowski scored a layup with 6:20 to play, bringing the Rocketeers within a point at 55-54 but Franklin senior Justin Allen (10 points) answered with a deep three and the Panthers outscored the hosts 14-5 the rest of the way. Bradley Herndon, who scored a career-high 20 points, hit a free throw and scored off an offensive rebound and Sean O’Leary converted a putback as the Panthers pushed the lead to 63-54 with 4:43 to play. Franklin forced a pair of turnovers, including a steal from Allen, that both led to transition layups for Herndon to help pull away. O’Leary carried Franklin through the first three quarters, finishing with a game-high 28 points. North Attleboro had a balanced scoring attack, led by senior Givany Carney with 13 points. Obuchowski finished with 11 points while sophomore Chase Frisoli added 10 points.

Girls Basketball = North Attleboro, 17 @ Franklin, 64 – Final 

– Franklin’s defensive pressure shut down North to secure a win that keeps the Panthers within one of league leader Attleboro. The Panthers held the Rocketeers to six points in the first quarter, 15 for the half, and then clamped down even further after the break. North was held to a single basket in the second half, a fourth quarter bucket for Maryellen Charette. After doubling up the Rocketeers in the first half, 30-15, a 24-0 third quarter broke the game wide open. Katie Peterson led 11 Franklin scorers with 11 points. Chloe Fales and Bridget Leo each added nine points and Lizzie Newman chipped in with eight. Sam Faria and Katie Corsetti were North’s top scorers with six points apiece.

"Franklin fell to a strong KP 133.65 to 138. However we had one of our best meets and had some season highs and personal bests!  

Vault - we started strong top 4 - Ryann Chandler 8.65, Emma Nelson 8.45, Maia Keohane 8.3 and Abby Scotland season high and personal best 8.25. Shout out to Bella Jacoby for personal best 8.05!! 

Bars - is our weakness event and these girls continue to push and work hard and they are getting more consistent! Top 4 Emma 8.35, Maia 7.65, Abby Robillard 7.6, Ciara O'Brien 7.4 and shout out to Abby Scotland for season high and personal best 7.3! 

Beam - Season high and personal best Katie Valutkevich 8.8, Emma 8.8, Maia 8.5, season high and personal best Lilly Cardin 8.4 so proud!! 

Floor - season high from Maia 9.0, season high from Olivia Reagan 8.8, Ryann 8.5, Emma 8.2, and shout out to Ciara with a come back routine 8.0! 

It's really hard to be upset with a loss that's filled with so many wins! I'm proud of how the team came together and persevered!"

Tri-County RVTHS Students’ Art Brings Life to New ThermoFisher Lab

ThermoFisher Scientific recently opened a 290,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Plainville, MA. The new facility will be used for manufacturing life-saving gene therapy products that will impact patients all over the world. In order to decorate the Quality Control (QC) testing hallway, ThermoFisher created a SmART Contest open to students ages 13-18 and our students answered the call.

Science themed art work created by contest winner Sinead Bergeron of Medway and runner-ups Catriona Keefe of Wrentham, Morgan Fleury of North Attleboro, and Alexander Vasilyev of Walpole line the QC Hallway and have also been utilized as decals to add color throughout the lab. The students were tasked with creating either computer generated graphics or hand-drawn images and explaining how the artwork displays “science” to them. “You have some amazingly talented students!” commented Marcia Goff, Director of External Communications for Pharma Services at Thermo Fisher Scientific.

The students and their guardians were invited to the ribbon cutting ceremony in August to celebrate the official opening of the new facility. Attendance at the ribbon cutting included: former Gov. Charlie Baker, Attleboro area Congressman Jake Auchincloss, Senator Becca Rausch, and State Representative Shawn Dooley. During the ceremony the four Tri-County students were honored for their works of art which reflect the company’s research efforts.

“Our students utilized the skills they have gained from Graphic Communications to clearly portray their idea of ‘science.’ It is interesting to see the range of ideas that were born for the open-ended contest,” said Linda Thompson, Graphic Communications instructor.

The state-of-the-art site was purpose-built for large-scale manufacturing. It will offer a flexible and scalable configuration of laboratory and production suites co-located with adjacent warehousing and office space. 

“All 16 of the Career Majors offered at Tri-County have a foundation in STEAM education. The incorporation of critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving helps prepare our students to be innovators and combine left and right brain thinking. It is an honor to have our students’ artwork hanging in the halls of a state-of-the-art facility for a worldwide leader in the pharmaceutical industry,” said Dr. Karen Maguire, Superintendent/Director, Tri-County RVTHS.

Congressman Jake Auchincloss: An Update on the last 2 weeks

LAST 2 WEEKS IN REVIEW I'm your representative in Congress, and I write to keep you informed. Happy New Year! On the Hill First Days of the 118th Congress: I was sworn in to my second term early Saturday morning after days of dysfunction from House Republicans. K of C Annual Free Throw Contest - Jan 20, 2023

"The Knights of Columbus, Sacred Heart Council 1847, Franklin is holding its Annual Free Throw Contest on Friday, 1/20/23. 

Registration begins at 6:00 PM and the contest follows immediately after at 6:30 PM at the Hockomock YMCA, 45 Forge Hill Road, Franklin, MA 

The event is open for boys and girls 9-14 years old as of 1/1/23 from surrounding towns. All contestants will shoot 15 free throws and are recognized for their participation in this event. 

The champs are invited to compete in the district competition which will immediately follow this event. This round contestants will shoot 25 free throws."

'There have been countless nights over the past eight months in which Reese Doyon has entered her mother’s bedroom around 11 p.m. or midnight to tell her she’s feeling dizzy.

“Then, before you can even move, she’s on the floor,” said Amy Doyon, Reese’s mother.

Doyon, 17-year-old sophomore in her first year with the Franklin High girls’ basketball team, suffers from frequent, non-epileptic seizures, as a result of functional neurological disorder — a highly rare condition where the brain doesn’t properly send and receive signals. An estimated four to 12 people per 100,000 develop FND, and the condition is even less common among adolescents.

While her current outlook is bleak, one overwhelming positive is the way her teammates and the community have collectively rallied around her."
