2 FHS teachers on the joy of teaching & the hard things about budget issues (audio)

FM #1401 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1401 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares the audio recording of my conversation with Leah Wahrhaftig-Jeri and Katherine Kellett, both teachers at Franklin High School. We had our conversation at the Franklin TV Studio on Monday, March  3, 2025.

Katherine Kellett, Teacher - English

Leah Wahrhaftig-Jeri, Teacher - World Language

  • We cover their road to Franklin and FHS

  • We talk about the joy in teaching

  • And the issues faced with continued budget cuts

    • Only one language to be offered at the middle school

    • Reduces the total of language classes High School graduates can carry forward to college

    • Text book & curriculum cuts challenge the appropriate delivery of curriculum

    • Loss of shared intellectual capital with colleagues cut due to budget

    • Language lab is a resource heavily utilized and will no longer available (per budget)

    • Struggle to attract and retain substitute teachers

    • Ripple effects for curriculum coverage that is lost and how that affects students and the next year’s teachers for that subject

The recording runs about 40 minutes, so let’s listen to my conversation with Leah and Katherine on teaching in challenging budget times

FHS boys basketball tops Central Catholic 52-44 to gain State D1 Finals

Via Twitter, Franklin TV, and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the Winter sports competition for Franklin High School on Monday, March 10, 2025

MARCHING ON.....TO THE FINALS!!
MARCHING ON.....TO THE FINALS!!
By Ryan Lanigan || HockomockSports.com Editor
"Deadlocked with Central Catholic going into the fourth quarter and a trip to the Division 1 state championship in the balance, Franklin knew there was only one way to win the game.

After all, it’s what the Panthers have used all season to get to this spot.

Defense and rebounding.

Top-seeded Franklin limited the fourth-seeded Raiders to just eight points over the final eight minutes — forcing as many turnovers as Central Catholic had made field goals (3) — en route to a 52-44 win. The victory sends the Panthers to their second consecutive Division 1 state championship game."

....

"Franklin boys basketball (26-1) will take on the winner of #7 Springfield Central and #3 Newton North (being played on Tuesday) in the Division 1 state championship this coming weekend at the Tsongas Center. Date and time are yet to be announced. "

Become a Founding Family for the Children's Museum by April

Exciting things are happening! Our community is coming together to bring Children's Museum of Franklin to life, but we need your help to make it a reality.

You're invited to become a Founding Family, playing a vital role in opening the doors to a place where children can learn, explore, and create unforgettable memories.

Our Founding Families, now 60 and counting, have committed to a tax-deductible donation of $1,000 or more via one-time, monthly, or quarterly payments, providing truly essential funding that helps to open the doors of the Museum.

All Founding Families will be listed in our lobby and on our website, establishing legacy for their family within an organization that will impact children for generations to come.

Learn more and become a Founding Family today – visit www.childrensmuseumfranklin.org/founding-families or email Erin at erin@childrensmuseumfranklin.org
