Friendly Reminder: You're invited to Cultural Connections - Feb 1 |
"The Stony Brook Camera Club will present “The Art of Landscape Photography” with Ron Wilson on Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
The presentation will show that subject matter provides the building blocks while composition acts as the glue holding it all together and lighting sets the stage for capturing a moment able to convey a sense of being there.
Topics covered will include: How to think visually through use of the elements of color, shape, line, texture and pattern, how to use light in a way that best reveals the subject, and how to frame an image around an effective compositional base."

"Superintendent Sara Ahern has been going from school to school sitting in on classes, hosting forums, and meeting with parents and other stakeholders to learn as much as she can about her new district.
Ahern highlighted her observations to the School Committee on Jan. 23, and while she had many positive things to say about the dedication of Franklin parents and teachers to their children, she also pointed out a few areas that could use improvement. Ahern took over this summer for Maureen Sabolinski, who retired at the end of last year.
The report, part of Ahern’s entry plan to the district, is a compilation of observations she gathered by visiting all 11 schools multiple times to perform observations on about 164 classrooms and other workplaces."

"In the spirit of springtime, the Franklin Downtown Partnership hopes to find all of the ladybug sculptures purchased by business owners in 2014, so the metal bugs can scale buildings and keep park-goers company.
Lisa Piana with the Downtown Partnership said the sculptures always bring smiles, and she hopes to see them all outside for everyone to enjoy.
“They’re really fun to look at, each one is unique,” she said. “We thought it would be fun to walk downtown and see them in all different places.”
Businesses, which bought the ladybugs from the cultural council about three years ago, should lend them for public display this spring, Piana said."

"One of the Commonwealth’s oldest charter schools is moving to a new building in Franklin with hopes of reducing its waiting list and doubling its enrollment within 10 years.
The Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School plans to break ground this spring on a 72,000-square foot building at 500 Financial Park Drive.
The new facility will allow the school to grow from 450 students in kindergarten through eighth grade to 900, said Heather Zolnowski, head of school."

"Kelsey London knew a two-hour talk about government would likely be heavy educational material for her two young daughters.
“It’s still a good introduction,” she said at the Franklin Public Library Saturday morning, “even if you don’t understand everything.”
The Franklin family was at the first event in a planned discussion series in town, meant to help residents understand and become involved in government.
The forum drew about 20 people. Local and state officials explained how government works, from the simple – the difference between a senator and a representative – to the complex – how Franklin officials decide the town budget."Continue reading the article online (subscription may be required)
