Sway, the cute dog, was the instigator in getting this conversation with Amber about #stillserving (audio)

FM #1287 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1287 in the series.

Amber DeGrandpre joined me in a conversation on Tuesday via Zoom to talk about her work and her volunteering after having served active duty. This is part of the VFW #StillServing series to highlight the volunteer work Amber and many other veterans do naturally.

Sway, the cute dog
Sway, the cute dog

Her day job is with the Massachusetts National Guard serving in an IT role currently but with a variety of roles over her years of service. Amber stepped down from the leadership team with the Franklin LGBTQ Alliance and is in the middle of a transition moving from Franklin to Western MA. She is still involved as we hear during our conversation.

The recording runs about 23 minutes, so let’s listen to my conversation with Amber. Audio link -> https://franklin-ma-matters.captivate.fm/episode/fm-1287-amber-degrandpre-stillserving-10-08-24/

Via Twitter, Franklin TV, and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the Fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Thursday, October 10, 2024

Football = Franklin, 28 @ Taunton, 9 – Final
1st Quarter: No scoring.
2nd Quarter: (T) Trinley Dudley 24-yard field goal; (F) Andrew Fraulo 16-yard rush, Owen Essam XP good.
3rd Quarter: (F) A. Fraulo 6-yard rush, O. Essam XP good.

"Franklin’s offense has found success this season with two different quarterbacks running two different offenses.

One common denominator between the two styles has been senior running back Andrew Fraulo.

The Panthers leaned heavily on the senior back on Thursday night and Fraulo rewarded them with 217 yards on the ground and three touchdowns to help Franklin score its first Kelley-Rex division win of the season with a 28-9 verdict on the road at Taunton."

Charles River Water Quality Grades - per report card for 2023

Charles River Water Quality Grades

Charles River Water Quality Grades
Charles River Water Quality Grades
Every year Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) works with the U.S. EPA to issue the Charles River Report Card to report on the recreational health of the Charles River.

CRWA recently released the 2023 Water Quality Report Card grades for the Charles River in September, which showed a slight decrease from the last year.

It was a wet year, and due to increased rainfall, CRWA observed a rise in stormwater pollution and combined sewer overflows. No section to the Charles River showed an improved grade from 2022. (Why are you hearing about 2023 now? Because the grades are based on water quality samples from 2021, 2022, and 2023.)

These grades show that water quality is worse in areas with more development, paved surfaces, and impervious cover. Less developed, more green spaces boast better quality, with plants and soil acting as filters, cleaning the water of pollutants.

This emphasizes the importance of wetlands, biodiversity, and nature-based solutions in nourishing a healthy river. Want to learn more about how you can help foster a healthy, biodiverse landscape or mitigate stormwater pollution on your property? Contact the Conservation Department today!

Explore the Report Card StoryMap, which provides information on the watershed, how the grades are calculated, and what we expect to see as a result of climate change here

Translated 2023 Report Card Grades Map versions are available in Simplified ChinesePortugueseHaitian Creole, and Spanish.

Washington Post: "Social Security issues 2.5% COLA increase"

"Social Security recipients will see a 2.5 percent increase in their monthly checks next year, the federal government announced Thursday. It’s a smaller hike than in recent years, which was expected given the cooling of inflation.

Soaring prices in recent years brought unusually large cost-of-living increases in benefit checks, since Social Security payouts are automatically adjusted once a year based on a government measure of inflation. The annual adjustment, known as COLA, brought seniors a 5.9 percent boost in 2022, an 8.7 percent increase in 2023 (the largest in about 40 years) and a 3.2 percent increase in 2024."

Memorial event today (10/10/24) at 9 AM on the Town Common Veterans Walkway to honor Emilio Dadario

The brief program will include
  • the placing of a Memorial Wreath for the day
  • the playing of Taps
  • a salute from those present
  • a reading of whatever history  may be available for that veteran
This is a way of keeping the memory of that veteran alive.

------------

Emilio Dadario, Private, US Army,  WWI

Emilio Daddario was born in Ofena, Italy in 1895 of Mr. & Mrs. Dominico Daddario. He lived in Franklin for about 17 years before he answered the call to defend his new nation.

He entered the service on September 20, 1917, and was assigned to Company F, 302nd Infantry Regiment, 76th Division, and shipped overseas on March 12, 1918.

Among other responsibilities, Emilio was the company bugler, a duty of which he was very proud.

On the battlefield, he served in Company K, 28th Infantry, 1st Division and was killed on this date in 1918.

10th Norfolk District Debate - 10/08/24 between State Rep Jeff Roy & Charles Bailey (audio)

FM #1286 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1286 in the series.

State Representative Jeff Roy met his challenger Charles Bailey in a debate on Tuesday October 8, 2024 at the Medway Middle School. The debate was arranged and hosted jointly by the Republican and Democratic Town Committees of both Medway and Franklin.

The debate was live streamed by Medway to their cable subscribers as well as to Facebook. Franklin likewise broadcast to their cable subscribers and to YouTube.

After a brief delay to allow for a technical issue to be resolved as well as the Medway Fire Chief to allow additional participants, as the room capacity (50) had been met, the debate began and lasted just about an hour.

The recording runs about 60 minutes, so let’s listen in. Audio link -> https://franklin-ma-matters.captivate.fm/episode/fm-1286-10th-norfolk-district-debate-10-08-24/
