FHS indoor track teams split vs. Attleboro; girls team win gains Hockomock division title
Via HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the fall sports competition for Franklin High School on Thursday, January 19, 2023. We also provide the link to the full set of Hockomock League results below.
Boys Indoor Track = Attleboro, 52 @ Franklin, 48 – Final
– Attleboro won both relays, setting a new school record in the 4×200 in the process, to rally for a win over Franklin and clinch the Kelley-Rex division title. Trailing by one going into the final relay, the Bombardiers 2×400 relay team of Peter DelPozzo, Michael Huntington, Jordan Rivera-Silva, and Adrian Rivera registered the best time in school history at 1:33.08 to win the relay and the dual meet. Attleboro’s 4×400 relay team of Austin Bowie, Nicolas Graber, Sean Kaswale, and Camden Martin won in 3:33.62, less than a second ahead of Franklin. Sean O’Hara-Ouellette won the high jump (6-00.00), Adrian Rivera and Jordan Rivera-Silva went 1-2 in the long jump, DelPozzo clocked in first in the 55M hurdles (8.47), and Rivera-Silva took first in the 300M. Luke Hagopian (1000M), Kamron marsh (shot put), and Graber (600M) each had key second place finishes to secure key points. Franklin picked up wins from Jacob Bowser (shot put), Tyler Apicella (2 Mile), Luke Sidwell (55M dash), Jack Halter (1000M), Jake Vaccarezza (600M), and swept the 1 Mile (Jonathan Pink, Will Boozang, Bradford Morin).
Girls Indoor Track = Attleboro, 9 @ Franklin, 90 – Final
– Franklin swept eight events in a dominant showing, finishing off a 5-0 season to clinch the Kelley-Rex division crown for the first time since 2018. The Panthers swept the high jump (Abigail Griffith, Sarah Dumas, Vera Hansen), the long jump (Dumas, Barra Pfluke, Cailyn Bruno), the shot put (Lily DeForge, Elizabeth Hopkins, Darby Nicholson), the 55M hurdles (Ella Chandaria, Hansen, Bruno), the 55M dash (Dumas, Chandaria, Sophia Cuneo), the 1000M (Gwenyth Holland, Allison Powderly, Katie Barrow), the 600M (Bruno, Anna Cliff, Ella McLaughlin), and the 300M (Cuneo, Olivia Costa, Cassidy Carmignani). Mackenzie Mann added a win in the 2 Mile, clocking in at 13:43.88. Attleboro’s Emilia Smith won the 1 Mile in 5:39.10.

Knights of Columbus Annual Free Throw Contest on Friday, Jan 20, 2023
"The Knights of Columbus, Sacred Heart Council 1847, Franklin is holding its Annual Free Throw Contest on Friday, 1/20/23.Registration begins at 6:00 PM and the contest follows immediately after at 6:30 PM at the Hockomock YMCA, 45 Forge Hill Road, Franklin, MAThe event is open for boys and girls 9-14 years old as of 1/1/23 from surrounding towns. All contestants will shoot 15 free throws and are recognized for their participation in this event.The champs are invited to compete in the district competition which will immediately follow this event. This round contestants will shoot 25 free throws."

Boston Globe: "Governor Healey wants to ‘drive economic development.’ Her first bill puts $1 billion toward that goal"
"Governor Maura Healey announced Thursday that she is filing her first two pieces of legislation, one of which is a $987 million “immediate needs” bond bill targeting housing and economic development.The wide-ranging, nearly billion-dollar “immediate needs” bond bill would dedicate $400 million for MassWorks, a program created in 2010 that makes grants available to cities and towns for infrastructure projects. Her bill would continue the funding stream for MassWorks and other programs, preventing key programs from running out of money.Healey, who has highlighted economic development as a top priority for her nascent administration, said she filed the bill “to ensure critical housing and economic development programs across the state can continue to serve people in Massachusetts without interruption.”

As we wrote in our earlier message, two virtual Town Hall meetings are scheduled, for Monday, January 23, and Sunday, February 5. Whether you're a long time 350 Mass member or someone looking to get involved, you are invited to join these Town Hall Meetings. Your insight is critical to selecting the most impactful campaign(s)! CommonWealth Magazine: "Region’s aging nuclear power plants drawing interest"
"Rep. Jeffrey Roy of Franklin, a Democrat who chairs the Legislature’s Telecommunications, Utilities, and Energy Committee, is a big supporter of offshore wind and solar. But he, too, sees a need for nuclear power plants.
Roy, who toured the Seabrook and Millstone plants last year, said he intends to file legislation shortly that would allow the Healey administration to pursue the purchase of electricity generated by Millstone.
He acknowledges the concerns about nuclear waste, but says the plant already exists so it makes sense to take advantage of its emission-free power to help address climate change. “It would be a shame if we didn’t at least take a look at it,” he said."

Representative Jeff Roy reports on his recent trade mission to San Miguel, Azores, and Lisbon, Portugal
Rep. Jeffrey N. Roy (D-Franklin) joined several Massachusetts legislative officials on a trade mission to San Miguel, Azores, and Lisbon, Portugal, to meet officials and discuss issues of importance to both sides, including economic development, educational partnerships, maritime security, and green energy initiatives. While there, Roy met with Portuguese and United States officials to discuss these issues of mutual interest.

The visit included meetings with Azores President Jose Manuel Boleiero, Mayor Pedro Nascimento Cabral, U.S. Consul to the Azores Margaret Campbell, historian José de Almeida Mello (chief librarian of the Ponta Delgada Municipal Library and the cultural attaché of Ponta Delgada City Hall), Catolica Rector Isabel Capeloa Gil, Pouguese Secretary of Internationalization Bernardo Ivo Cruz, and U.S. Ambassador Randi Charon Levine. It also included stops at the Nonagon Technology Park, the University of the Azores, Católica University, the Palacio das Necessidades, FLAD, the Jose do Canto Palace and Gardens, Palacio Sant Ana, Santo Christopher Sanctuary, and Hassamaim Synagogue.
“Massachusetts and Portugal are great friends and I was honored to travel with the delegation to foster and strengthen the ties between the our state and the Portuguese nation,” said Rep. Roy. “Our talks focused on shared common democratic values and concerns, international relations, energy, education, and the Inflation Reduction Act which was passed in August 2022. Portugal is a gateway to Europe and it is essential to have cooperation between the countries on the two sides of the Atlantic.”
Augusto Athayde, Count of Albuquerque, commented that it is important “to develop and strengthen the good and prosperous relationship between the Azores and Portugal and the USA, and especially with Massachusetts, where so many Azorean families have set and organized their lives, and therefore by doing so, promoted the development of links between both our great countries.”

While there, the delegation also experienced some of the local culture and landmarks including traditional folkloric dance, a traditional fado dinner, the Sanctuary at Fatima, the Monastery at Batalha, and the historic towns of Nazare and Obidos.
No taxpayer funds were expended on the trip and each member of the delegation personally paid for the costs of the flights, accommodations, and meals.

Boys Hockey = Franklin, 5 @ Oliver Ames, 1 – Final
– Oliver Ames scored a goal late in the first period to make it 1-1 but Franklin used three goals in the second period to pull away from the Tigers. Dan Daley, Anthony Lampasona, and Ben Paterson each registered three points in the win witih Daley and Lampasona each scoring twice with one helper and Paterson assisting on three goals. Sophomore Jack Wernig opened the scoring early for Franklin but a goal from OA’s Andrew Livingstone (from Bryce Deibel) with less than two minutes left leveled it at 1-1. Daley (from Paterson) put Franklin ahead and Lamapsona scored two more in the second. Daley grabbed his second, again from Paterson, in the third to make it 5-1. OA goalie Brandon Burke made 35 saves in the loss.
Girls Hockey = Franklin, 1 vs. Medfield, 1 – Final
It’s a #frozentundra kind of night as @fhsvgockey take on Medfield. After 1P, Medfield leads 1-0. @HockomockSports @FHSSportsFranklin puts one on the board to tie it up late in the 2P. 1-1 with just over 2 min in the period.We are heading to OT at Veterans Arena. 1-1 at the end of regulation.Final from the #frozenTundra Franklin 1 Medfield 1
Gymnastics = Canton, 119.65 @ Franklin, 131.00 – Final
Senior night was a big success. FHS 131 Canton 119.65. Details to follow.
