Franklin TV: Meet Liz Harkins

The Changing of the Guard

by Pete Fasciano, Executive Director 08/09/2026

When I began work at freshly formed Franklin.TV I knew I had a big hill to climb. Looking outward from atop these last 14 years of great growth and service, it’s a comfort to know that we’re in good shape – in all respects.

Now the time has come to pass the torch. From now until the end of the year I will be passing my responsibilities as Franklin.TV’s Executive Director to Liz Harkins. She is very experienced, amply qualified and capable, and will bring her forward-looking vision of community media service to Franklin.

The masthead above says, ‘Meet Liz Harkins’. That’s my recommendation. She’s here every day. Call the studio and arrange a personal ‘Hello and welcome aboard’.

In the weeks ahead I will be transferring (inflicting?) the many day-to-day tasks and responsibilities to Liz that the work entails. One such task that I will surely miss – writing these words – every single week. (A personal joy and privilege.)

Next week we post our 3rd legal notice regarding our Annual Open Board Meeting that takes place here at the studio on Saturday, August 29th.

On August 23, Liz will bring her own voice and vision to these pages. The words I wrote in my initial posting follow on the next page.

They ring true today as they did then – for progress never ends.

And – as always –

Thank you for watching.
Thanks for listening to wfpr●fm,
and staying informed at Franklin●news.

Making Progress !

Pete Fasciano, a/k/a “The New Guy”  8/24/2012

Somewhere back in the early days of TV I remember General Electric’s tag line:
“Progress is Our Most Important Product.”
As a youngster, I pondered how a company goes about manufacturing progress. Solid or liquid? Do they sell progress by the bag or barrel? Is progress portable?

I hope so.

I’d like to pack some with me wherever I go (because you just never know).

In my time, I’ve tackled many projects. My latest is Franklin TV. I’m The New Guy. If memory serves, you have to be The New Guy for at least a year. Perhaps I should put that on my business card. – Pete Fasciano, New Guy. That said, I must say that I can’t recall a time when I’ve been welcomed into a community so warmly with open arms. Clearly, Franklin has a soft spot for new guys. That’s just one among many good things I’m learning about Franklin, and why this is a truly great town. The consistent support that I’ve gotten from local folks has been most gratifying. While tackling all that must be done to make Franklin TV successful, I’m also gratified that real progress is being made. We are improving our technical facility now and all through the next year. We have a new website. It will also see progress in the days ahead. We are launching a Franklin Radio service as well.

That’s solid progress.

One More Thing !
Pete Fasciano, Executive Director

Our schedules are about to get a facelift. Later this month we’re going to be rearranging our schedules a bit. Our goal is to make our programming day more consistent across the week and (hopefully) make it easier for you to know when certain types of programs should be on – music, sports, etc. We’ll be moving some programs around to see how it all looks.

It’s a bit like furniture. Does everything look like it’s in the right place? At least, programs are much lighter than furniture. No heavy lifting. In the end, we hope that (like furniture) you find our schedule to be comfy, functional and inviting.

And, thanks for watching!

The Post 75 Senior Team closes out their season, the Post 75 Junior Team still playing

Post 75 Senior Team

"A remarkable season has come to a close for Franklin Post 75.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, Upper Deck Post 14 (Rhode Island) answered with two runs in the sixth before adding an insurance run in the seventh to secure a 3-1 victory in an elimination game at the American Legion Northeast Regional Tournament.

Franklin battled throughout the afternoon in a tightly contested pitchers' duel, but Rhode Island capitalized late and held off Post 75's final comeback attempt to advance in the tournament.

Final Score:
Upper Deck Post 14 (Rhode Island) – 3
Franklin Post 75 – 1

Despite today's result, Franklin closes out an outstanding summer that included an undefeated regular season, a Massachusetts American Legion State Championship, and a trip to the Northeast Regional Tournament to represent the Commonwealth on one of the region's biggest stages.

Congratulations to Franklin Post 75 on an incredible 2026 season, and thank you to everyone who followed along with our coverage throughout the summer."

Shark Marty Found and Sticking Around: 10-Foot Great White Named for Stop & Shop’s Iconic Robot “Pings” Repeatedly in Two Weeks After Tagging

It’s official. Shark Marty has arrived. And she is in no hurry to leave Cape Cod.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) announced confirmation that its research team, working with the MA Division of Marine Fisheries, tagged the first newly identified great white shark of the 2026 season, officially completing the mission to find Marty launched with Stop & Shop earlier this summer. The 10-foot female great white shark bears the name of the grocer’s iconic in-store robot as a salute to Stop & Shop’s renewed partnership supporting AWSC’s shark research, education, and conservation efforts.

Shark Marty Found and Sticking Around: 10-Foot Great White Named for Stop & Shop’s Iconic Robot “Pings” Repeatedly in Two Weeks After Tagging

Since her tagging on July 16, Marty has stuck around the upper Cape. Her acoustic tag has pinged a receiver off North Truro 15 times, most recently at 5:32 p.m. on Sunday, August 2. Every detection is documented on AWSC’s free Sharktivity app. The public will be able to follow Marty along with dozens of other tagged white sharks in the waters off Cape Cod.

“Now that Marty has been tagged and identified, we expect she’ll quickly become a fan favorite as people follow her journey along the coast,” said Cynthia Wigren, Chief Executive Officer of the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. “Tracking her is exciting for the public, but for our scientists it’s also incredibly valuable. Every time Marty passes one of our acoustic receivers, she provides new data that helps us better understand how white sharks use these waters. We hope she’ll continue helping us advance this research for many years to come.”

Marty’s acoustic tag transmits a unique signal which is detected whenever she swims within range of one of the receivers positioned along the coast. That data helps researchers study white shark behavior, movement, and population dynamics off Cape Cod. The work improves public safety and supports long-term conservation.

“We’re excited to officially welcome Shark Marty to Cape Cod and celebrate the important research and conservation work of the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy,” said Roger Wheeler, President of Stop & Shop. “We hope Marty sparks curiosity and inspires people across the region to learn more about these remarkable animals. Whether tracking her latest ping or bringing home a Shark Marty plush, there are now plenty of ways to stay connected to her story for years to come.”

AWSC and Stop & Shop launched the search for Marty in June alongside the debut of a limited-edition Shark Marty plush toy at participating Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Twenty percent of proceeds from each plush sold support AWSC’s research, education, and conservation programs, contributing to Stop & Shop’s broader $10,000 commitment to the organization. The plush has given customers a fun way to follow Marty’s story while helping advance important shark science and conservation efforts.

AWSC encourages beachgoers to download the Sharktivity app for real-time shark sightings, detections, and alerts, and to review shark safety guidelines before entering the water.

About the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy

Since 2013, AWSC has worked in collaboration with shark science experts, community partners, public and government officials, researchers, donors, friends, and followers to augment scientific research, improve factors that affect public safety, and educate both the local and broader community to inspire a greater understanding of white sharks and conservation of the species.

AWSC supports multiple long-term research projects in collaboration with scientists from Canada to Florida that seek to increase our collective knowledge of white sharks. Through AWSC's public education programs that reach thousands of young people each year, the nonprofit provides science-based, hands-on learning opportunities that have lasting impact. Every season, thousands of Cape Cod residents and visitors from across the country learn about white shark research and shark conservation at AWSC's Shark Center in Chatham, Massachusetts. For the latest white shark news, follow AWSC on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
