Boston Globe: "How is the state doing on climate? The latest report card tells all"
"The state’s second-ever annual Climate Report Card was released Friday, showing a mixed bag of results.Last year showed some progress on heat pump installations, electric vehicles and chargers, land conservation, and efforts at adaptation to the impacts of climate change. But there were some clear headwinds, too, that led to a slowdown in clean energy development — a must-have if the state is going to stay on track for its target of essentially zeroing out greenhouse gas emissions by mid-century.“For the things that we can control, we are seeing the results,” said Katherine Antos, state undersecretary for decarbonization and resilience. “The challenges that we’re facing more have to do with macro economic conditions.”One thing is clear: While every year in this decade is critical for the climate, the hardest part is yet to come. “We always knew that 2025 to 2030 is the time where we really need to see market transformation and scaling of these solutions,” Antos said."

All Night Party for Class of 2025 in jeopardy, please respond to survey by Jan 19
Dear FHS Families, and Class of 2025 Students,
We are writing today to let you know that as of this time, there will NOT be an All Night Party (ANP) for the Senior Class after their Graduation on June 6th. Unfortunately, the long-time chairperson of this event needed to step down and there is not an existing committee or volunteer base to take over.
It is important to point out that the All Night Party is not an event affiliated with or provided by the Franklin School District or the FHS PCC - it is a community event planned and executed independently by parents, families, and community volunteers.
We are sharing this information with you today to get everyone thinking about what the future of the ANP should/could look like and how the Class of 2025 would like to move forward. With that goal in mind, we would like to begin by gauging overall interest in the ANP from both the senior students, and all FHS families. Additionally, we need to know if there is in fact a group of parents and community members that is willing to step up immediately to begin the work.
It is extremely important for everyone to understand that unless there are parents, and community members willing to not only volunteer a couple of hours of time, but to plan and execute the entire event, the All Night Party WILL NOT TAKE PLACE in June.
SENIOR STUDENTS ONLY - Please take just a minute to complete this quick ANP Student Survey (linked below) regarding your feelings toward an All Night Party after Graduation. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdngPpus2j-Td5F_pUuP91784F2Wp7OsGZaRlf6CZkqF9ko5A/viewform
ALL FHS PARENTS/GUARDIANS and COMMUNITY MEMBERS - Please complete this short ANP Parent & Community Survey (linked below) about your wishes for the continuation of the ANP as well as your ability to volunteer. You do not have to have a senior at FHS to volunteer.https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe6WfDhykupbGrT9k5MlqaV1IFx87brCQQ04eS28yL8LJezQA/viewform
Thank you for your time and quick response.
Sincerely,
The Class of 2025 Advisors and FHS PCC
School Committee recognizes FHS Cheerleaders, approves temporary naming for redistricting, gets update from Franklin TV (audio)
FM #1354 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1354 in the series.
This session shares the Franklin (MA) School Committee meeting held on Tuesday, Jan 14, 2024. 6 of the 7 members participated (6 in Chambers, 1 absent - Sompally).
Quick recap
FHS Cheerleaders recognized for winning multiple championships, approved for travel to the National Championship
Superintendent's report included multiple updates on redistricting efforts underway
FHS school update provided insights in the school year thus far
FHS Program of Studies update raised some clarification questions and at least one surprise that the community service hours added to the graduation requirements are not being monitored this year due to the budget cut that removed the individual who would have done that tracking. Community hours were being done by students, no one single person was tracking to ensure all the students were doing so this school year
Franklin TV provided an update on the programming provided to the community including the live broadcast of this meeting (across town, 2 school concerts were also broadcast and the FHS girls basketball game was also broadcast). revenue is dropping due to cable cutting, proposal at State Legislature on potential alternate revenue for cable operations, new Federal administration may attempt to dismantle the Federal authorization for cable broadcasting
Discussion action items
approved after much discussion as amended the notification on the temporary names for the schools as part of the redistricting
Capital budget modified from initial preview and approved
3 policies for first reading approved to move to second reading
Update on educational expenses for the student from the emergency shelter. Quarterly reimbursement from DESE only used to offset the costs of educating these students. Reimbursement at rate of $104/per day/per student. The override had nothing to do with the education of these students. FPS does not use the operational budget to educate the student from the emergency shelter
Grants to the amount of $1.6 M were preview by the committee (document not part of the public set released prior to the meeting). Over what period these grants covered was not mentioned out loud.
Round of subcommittee updates
Motion to enter executive session, not to return to public meeting, passed 6-0-1 (1 absent)
